The oviposition preference of Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) for bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds was evaluated. The tests were carried out under greenhouse conditions, in the dry and wet seasons, with the following genotypes: ARC 3s, ARC 5s (wild genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds); ARC 1, ARC 2, ARC 3, ARC 4 (near isogenic lines containing arcelin in the seeds - EMBRAPA) and Porrillo 70, Bolinha, IAPAR MD 808 (commercial genotypes without arcelin). In the free choice and no-choice oviposition tests, Bolinha and Porrillo 70 genotypes were preferred for oviposition by that insect. The Bolinha susceptibility could be related to the great number of acicular trichomes presents on its leaves... |

The biology of Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Genn.) on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds was evaluated. Also, biochemical screening of seeds and leaves material of these genotypes were carried out in order to verify if traces of arcelin could be found in its leaves. The tests were conducted under greenhouse conditions, in the dry and wet seasons, with the following genotypes: ARC 3s, ARC 5s (wild genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds); ARC 1, ARC 2, ARC 3, ARC 4 (near isogenic lines containing arcelin in the seeds - EMBRAPA) and Porrillo 70, Bolinha, IAPAR MD 808 (commercial genotypes without arcelin). The wild genotypes, ARC 3s and ARC 5s, showed high levels of antibiosis resistance type, mainly for ARC 5s which... |

Background: The Bemisia tabaci is one of the most devastating pests of agricultural crops and ornamental plants worldwide. The genetic diversity and biotype status of the Bemisia tabaci in Pakistan was assessed by using random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR). A total 80 samples of B. tabaci collected from 14 districts of the Punjab province and 7 districts of the Sindh province were included. Results: All 10 primers screened in this study generated 151 scorable amplification products, of which 117 or 77% were polymorphic. Pairwise Nei and Lis similarity had ranged from 0.25 to 0.88 among all individuals analyzed. Based on Nei and Lis similarity coefficients Bemisia populations were grouped into 3 main clusters and clearly... |

The Bemisia tabaci complex is formed by approximately 41 biotypes, two of which (B and BR) occur in Brazil. In this work we aimed at obtaining genetic markers to assess the genetic diversity of the different biotypes. In order to do that we analyzed Bemisia tabaci biotypes B, BR, Q and Cassava using molecular techniques including RAPD, PCR-RFLP and sequencing of the ITS1 rDNA region. The analyses revealed a high similarity between the individuals of the B and Q biotypes, which could be distinguished from the BR individuals. A phylogenetic tree based on ITS1 rDNA sequence was constructed. This is the first report of the ITS1 rDNA sequence of Bemisia tuberculata and of the BR biotype of B. tabaci. |

ABSTRACT: Insect-transmitted viruses cause some of the most damaging and economically important diseases of crop plants, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The geminiviruses, a group of single-stranded DNA viruses with unique twined icosahedral virus particles, are responsible for many of these diseases. Of particular importance are the geminiviruses transmitted by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), which are in the genus Begomovirus. This is the largest genus of plant viruses (in terms of number of species), and some are responsible for many devastating diseases in vegetable and fiber crops throughout the world. This review presents the current understanding of begomoviruses, the diseases they cause, and approaches for disease management. An... |

A survey was conducted in Brasília, DF, from January 1999 to March 2001, on tobacco, cotton, tomato, cabbage, soybean, bean, melon, eggplant and the weed Emilia sonchifolia DC, to collect natural enemies of the whiteflies Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood). Fourteen predators, twelve parasitoids and two hyperparasitoids were collected. Among the parasitoids, Encarsia inaron (Walker) is recorded for the first time in South America, and E. basicincta Gahan is a new record for Brazil. E. aleurothrixi Evans & Polaszek is recorded for the first time parasitizing B. tabaci. The lady beetles Nephaspis hydra Gordon and Delphastus davidsoni Gordon are registered for the first time preying on B. tabaci. |
