Indigenous and introduced species of the Bemisia tabaci complex in sweet potato crops from Argentina Agriscientia (Córdoba)
Alemandri,V; Martino,J.A; Di Feo,L; Truol,G.
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) is one of the most important crops worldwide. Recently, the appearance of severe viral symptoms has been observed in sweet potato crops in the pampas region of Argentina and both begomovirus and crinivirus, exclusively transmitted by whiteflies, have been identified. The aim of this study was to identify B. tabaci species from sweet potato crops in Colonia Caroya by analysing mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) sequences. Two previously described haplotypes were identified: New World2 (indigenous species) and MEAM1 (introduced species). The results indicate the presence of both species, which are potential vectors of begomovirus and crinivirus in Argentina.

Sequential sampling of Bemisia tuberculata (Bondar, 1923) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) on cassava crop Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,ANTONIO S.; MOTA,THIAGO A.; FERNANDES,MARCOS G.; KASSAB,SAMIR O..
Estimate efficiently of the whitefly population (Bemisia tuberculata Bondar) in cassava, to assist in decision making of pest control is one of the advantages of sequential sampling plans. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine a sequential sampling plan according to two methods of pest management, using biological and/or chemical control. Samples were obtained in a commercial field of 2.500,00 m2, divided into 100 plots. The visualization method was used for sampling of the upper leaves by counting the number of adults. In total 15 samples were taken weekly from January to April 2012. The spatial distribution model which best fit to the behavior of B. tuberculata adults was the negative binomial distribution. Levels adapted for biological...

Seasonal dynamics and management of whitefly ( Bemesia tabaci Genn.) in tomato ( Solanum esculentum Mill.) BABT
Sharma,Devinder; Maqbool,Asifa; Jamwal,Vishav Vir Singh; Srivastava,Kuldeep; Sharma,Ashutosh.
ABSTRACT Studies on seasonal dynamics of white fly (Bemesia tabaci) on tomato (Solanum esculentum var. Pusa Ruby) revealed that it appeared first during the 13th and reached maximum during 21st standard meteorological week. A positive correlation between adult population and abiotic factors viz. temperature (maximum and minimum) and sunshine hours was observed, whereas humidity (maximum and minimum) and rainfall showed a negative correlation with it. Taken together, the key weather parameters studied, caused 89.00 per cent variation in whitefly population (R2 value). Combination of carbofuran (soil application) + imidacloprid (seed treatment ) + imidacloprid (foliar application) proved significantly superior and caused maximum reduction in whitefly...

Genetic diversity analysis of Bemisia tabaci populations in Pakistan using RAPD markers Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Hameed,Saima; Hameed,Shahid; Sadia,Munazza; Malik,Salman A.
Background: The Bemisia tabaci is one of the most devastating pests of agricultural crops and ornamental plants worldwide. The genetic diversity and biotype status of the Bemisia tabaci in Pakistan was assessed by using random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR). A total 80 samples of B. tabaci collected from 14 districts of the Punjab province and 7 districts of the Sindh province were included. Results: All 10 primers screened in this study generated 151 scorable amplification products, of which 117 or 77% were polymorphic. Pairwise Nei and Li’s similarity had ranged from 0.25 to 0.88 among all individuals analyzed. Based on Nei and Li’s similarity coefficients Bemisia populations were grouped into 3 main clusters and clearly...

Genetic diversity of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) Populations in Brazil revealed by RAPD markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lima,L.H.C.; Campos,L.; Moretzsohn,M.C.; Návia,D.; Oliveira,M.R.V. de.
Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) was considered a secondary pest in Brazil until 1990, despite being an efficient geminivirus vector in beans and soybean. In 1991, a new biotype, known as B. tabaci B biotype (=B. argentifolii) was detected attacking weed plants and causing phytotoxic problems in Cucurbitaceae. Nowadays, B. tabaci is considered one of the most damaging whitefly pests in agricultural systems worldwide that transmits more than 60 different plant viruses. Little is known about the genetic variability of these populations in Brazil. Knowledge of the genetic variation within whitefly populations is necessary for their efficient control and management. The objectives of the present study were to use RAPD markers (1) to estimate the genetic diversity of B....

Diversity analysis of Bemisia tabaci biotypes: RAPD, PCR-RFLP and sequencing of the ITS1 rDNA region Genet. Mol. Biol.
Rabello,Aline R.; Queiroz,Paulo R.; Simões,Kenya C.C.; Hiragi,Cássia O.; Lima,Luzia H.C.; Oliveira,Maria Regina V.; Mehta,Angela.
The Bemisia tabaci complex is formed by approximately 41 biotypes, two of which (B and BR) occur in Brazil. In this work we aimed at obtaining genetic markers to assess the genetic diversity of the different biotypes. In order to do that we analyzed Bemisia tabaci biotypes B, BR, Q and Cassava using molecular techniques including RAPD, PCR-RFLP and sequencing of the ITS1 rDNA region. The analyses revealed a high similarity between the individuals of the B and Q biotypes, which could be distinguished from the BR individuals. A phylogenetic tree based on ITS1 rDNA sequence was constructed. This is the first report of the ITS1 rDNA sequence of Bemisia tuberculata and of the BR biotype of B. tabaci.

A review of geminivirus diseases in vegetables and other crops in Brazil: current status and approaches for management Horticultura Brasileira
Inoue-Nagata,Alice K; Lima,Mirtes F; Gilbertson,Robert L.
ABSTRACT: Insect-transmitted viruses cause some of the most damaging and economically important diseases of crop plants, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The geminiviruses, a group of single-stranded DNA viruses with unique twined icosahedral virus particles, are responsible for many of these diseases. Of particular importance are the geminiviruses transmitted by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), which are in the genus Begomovirus. This is the largest genus of plant viruses (in terms of number of species), and some are responsible for many devastating diseases in vegetable and fiber crops throughout the world. This review presents the current understanding of begomoviruses, the diseases they cause, and approaches for disease management. An...

Valle,GE do; Zucchi,MI; Stabellini,NS; Lourenção,AL; Pinheiro,JB.
We aimed to characterize the population genetic structure within and among five Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) populations collected from different host plants and geographic regions by using microssatelites as a molecular marker. Each population was represented by 19 specimens. The host plants and geographic origins of these populations were described as follows: Pop 1: Squash Barreiras (BA); Pop 2: Cotton Barreiras (BA); Pop 3: Soybean Campinas (SP); Pop 4: Tomato Cruz das Almas (BA); and Pop 5: Soybean Rondonópolis (MT). Six polymorphic loci were observed, which discriminated 31 different alleles in the studied populations, with a mean number of alleles per population of 3.30 (2.67 - 4.00). Using Fisher's Exact test, it was observed that at least three...

Does the presence of weeds affect Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) infestation on tomato plants in a semi-arid agro-ecosystem? Neotropical Entomology
Bezerra,Mary-Ann S.; Oliveira,Maria R.V. de; Vasconcelos,Simão D..
Integrated Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) management requires quantitative knowledge on the mechanisms of persistence of pest populations in non-commercial host plants. We investigated B. tabaci oviposition preference among tomato and four weed species, and the insect population fluctuation under field conditions in the semi-arid region. At weekly intervals, we determined the level (number of eggs and nymphs per leaf) and the density of infestation (number of eggs and nymphs per leaf area) in all species. We observed an oviposition preference gradient among the species, with different degrees of attractiveness; Acanthospermum hispidum was the most infested species whereas Amaranthus deflexus was the least infested one. We also detected a significantly higher...
