Understanding Public Support for Indigenous Natural Resource Management in Northern Australia Ecology and Society
Zander, Kerstin K; Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods, Charles Darwin University; The Northern Institute, Charles Darwin University; kerstin.zander@cdu.edu.au.
Increased interest in indigenous-led natural resource management (NRM) on traditionally owned land in northern Australia has raised important questions in relation to policies that compensate indigenous Australians for providing environmental services. A choice experiment survey was mailed out to respondents across the whole of Australia to assess if and to what extent Australian people think that society benefits from these services and how much they would pay for them. More than half the respondents would in principle support indigenous NRM in northern Australia, with a high willingness to pay for carbon, biodiversity, and recreational services. Social aspects of indigenous NRM, however, were not valued by the society, emphasizing the need for awareness...

Non-market use and non-use values for preserving ecosystem services over time: A choice experiment application to coral reef ecosystems in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Marre, Jean-baptiste; Brander, Luke; Thebaud, Olivier; Boncoeur, Jean; Pascoe, Sean; Coglan, Louisa; Pascal, Nicolas.
Non-use values (i.e. economic values assigned by individuals to ecosystem goods and services unrelated to current or future uses) provide one of the most compelling incentives for the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. Assessing the non-use values of non-users is relatively straightforward using stated preference methods, but the standard approaches for estimating non-use values of users (stated decomposition) have substantial shortcomings which undermine the robustness of their results. In this paper, we propose a pragmatic interpretation of non-use values to derive estimates that capture their main dimensions, based on the identification of a willingness to pay for ecosystem protection beyond one's expected life. We empirically test our...

Estimating the Adoption of Bt Eggplant in India: Who Benefits from Public-Private Partnership? AgEcon
Krishna, Vijesh V.; Qaim, Matin.
The study analyzes ex-ante the adoption of insect resistant Bt eggplant in India. Farmers' willingness to pay (WTP) is estimated using the contingent valuation method. Given the economic importance of insect pests, the average WTP for proprietary Bt hybrids is more than four times the current price of conventional hybrids. Since the private innovating firm has shared its technology with the public sector, it is likely that public open-pollinated Bt varieties will also be released after a small delay. This will reduce farmers' WTP for Bt hybrids by 35%, thus decreasing the scope for corporate pricing policies. Nonetheless, ample profit potential remains. Analysis of factors influencing farmers' adoption decisions demonstrates that public Bt varieties will...

Analysis of Consumer Attitudes and Consumers’ Willingness to Pay for Functional Foods AgEcon
Di Pasquale, Jorgelina; Adinolfi, Felice; Capitanio, Fabian.
The objective of this study is to analyze consumer behaviour in relation to functional foods by a direct survey. To this end, the proposal is an analysis of the reasons for choosing to consume this type of food or not, accompanied by a supplementary investigation, mostly to assess the relationship between consumption patterns and willingness to pay (WTP) for the most common categories of functional foods, such as milk fortified with CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Our research shows that a proportion of the population is unaware of the existence of functional foods and their properties. Moreover, it shows that when the concept of functional foods is explained to consumers, this creates a greater willingness to pay for such food, which is strongly linked to...

Are Consumers Willing to Pay More for Biodegradable Containers Than for Plastic Ones? Evidence from Hypothetical Conjoint Analysis and Nonhypothetical Experimental Auctions AgEcon
Yue, Chengyan; Hall, Charles R.; Behe, Bridget K.; Campbell, Benjamin L.; Dennis, Jennifer H.; Lopez, Roberto G..
This study used and compared hypothetical conjoint analysis and nonhypothetical experimental auctions to elicit floral customers’ willingness to pay for biodegradable plant containers. The results of the study show that participants were willing to pay a price premium for biodegradable containers, but the premium is not the same for different types of containers. This article also shows the mixed ordered probit model generates more accurate results when analyzing the conjoint analysis Internet survey data than the ordered probit model.

Comparing Parts with the Whole: Willingness to Pay for Pesticide-Free, Non-GM, and Organic Potatoes and Sweet Corn AgEcon
Bernard, John C.; Bernard, Daria J..
Auction experiments were used to investigate demand relationships and willingness to pay (WTP) for four versions of potatoes and sweet corn—conventional, organic, and two parts of organic: no pesticides and non-genetically modified (non-GM). Elasticities showed strong and asymmetric substitute relationships between organic and its parts. Combined premiums of the parts were not significantly different than the whole organic premium, suggesting WTP for the attributes are not additive. A two-stage heteroskedastic tobit model found significant WTP for each part dependent on demographics and beliefs about conventional versions. Results suggest segments for parts of organic could be established alongside the whole.

Consumer Willingness to Pay for Breads Marketed as "Low-Carbohydrate" AgEcon
Wachenheim, Cheryl J.; Nganje, William E.; Kaitibie, Simeon; Johnston, Gretchen.
Bread producers are taking advantage of healthy feeding habits by developing new "low carbohydrate" products to entice customers. These low carbohydrate breads are generally more expensive than conventional types. This study tests the hypothesis that consumers are willing to pay higher premium for "low carbohydrate" breads at various locations and markets. We use retail data in a hedonic pricing framework to estimate the premium paid for the "low carbohydrate" attribute of bread. Results show that the implicit price of the "low carbohydrate" attribute of bread ranges from about 0.06¢ to 1.1¢ per gram, reflecting the amount consumers are willing to pay above the price of conventional bread.

The Effect of Information Choice and Discussion on Consumers' Willingness-to-Pay for Nanotechnologies in Food AgEcon
Roosen, Jutta; Bieberstein, Andrea; Marette, Stephan; Blanchemanche, Sandrine; Vandermoere, Frederic.
We evaluate the impact of different information sequences on participants’ hypothetical willingness to pay (WTP) for food produced using nanotechnology. In three treatment groups, information on the health, societal, or environmental impact linked to nanotechnology was revealed in different sequences: an imposed order, a chosen order, and a chosen order after a discussion among participants. Results show that information choice is important. While in the imposed order, the first information revealed has no effect on WTP, the information chosen first has a strong impact. Discussion has no further impact. Health information was a priority and significantly decreased WTP, while societal and environmental information did not significantly influence WTP.

Cognitive Dissonance as a Means of Reducing Hypothetical Bias AgEcon
Alfnes, Frode; Yue, Chengyan; Jensen, Helen H..
Hypothetical bias is a persistent problem in stated preference studies. We propose and test a method for reducing hypothetical bias based on the cognitive dissonance literature in social psychology. A central element of this literature is that people prefer not to take inconsistent stands and will change their attitudes and behavior to make them consistent. We find that participants in a stated preference willingness-to-pay study, when told that a nonhypothetical study of similar goods would follow, state significantly lower willingness to pay than participants not so informed. In other words, participants adjust their stated willingness to pay to avoid cognitive dissonance from taking inconsistent stands on their willingness to pay for the good being...

An experimental study of wine consumers’ willingness to pay for environmental characteristics AgEcon
Bazoche, P.; Deola, C.; Soler, Louis-Georges.
The reduction of pesticides use is becoming a priority for the public authorities in many countries. We conducted an experiment with wine consumers to see whether end-consumers value the dissemination of information about environmentally-friendly production practices. The experiment was devised to (i) evaluate whether there is a premium for environmentally-friendly wines, (ii) determine whether or not consumers are sensitive to label owners who implement and guarantee the environmental actions, (iii) and assess the impact of public messages about the consequences of pesticide use. Some 139 participants were divided randomly into two groups. One group had no specific information about the current state of pesticide use in farming. The other group was given...

DEMAND FOR CREDENCE CHARACTERISTICS IN BEEF AgEcon
Kola, Jukka; Latvala, Terhi.
The recent food crises in Europe have raised public concerns about the quality and safety of food. The growing concern among the consumers towards food safety issues has increased the demand for quality attributes. Most quality properties of food products can be considered as credence characteristics, quality of which cannot be inferred before the purchase, and sometimes not even after the purchase. The aim of this study is to evaluate, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the value of new information about and the information systems set for credence characteristics of beef. Economics of information is the theoretical framework. The quantitative approach focuses to measure the ex ante value of credence characteristics, and the method of contingent...

Consumers' Perception of Milk Safety AgEcon
Novoselova, Tatiana A.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; van der Lans, Ivo A.C.M.; Valeeva, Natasha I..
Several times during the last decade consumers have been warned about different incidents concerning food safety, like, salmonella in eggs, cheese and poultry, and pesticides residues in tomatoes. The problem of food safety is still to be a largely latent concern for consumers. The main research goal of this paper is to investigate consumers' risk attitudes and risk perceptions concerning milk safety and to estimate their willingness to pay for extra-safe milk. The data was collected in the Netherlands using a mail survey. 211 usable questionnaires (26%) were returned. Results show that, in general, consumers are not concerned about the safety of milk. However, the results of consumers' perceptions of the "riskiness of milk contamination" for vulnerable...

Die Nachfrage nach Fair-Trade-Produkten in Deutschland - Eine empirische Untersuchung unter Berücksichtigung von Präferenzen für Bio-Produkte AgEcon
Henseleit, Meike.

THE ECONOMICS OF GREENING THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL AgEcon
Dobson, Blaise.
The paper analyzes the broad history underpinning the concept of sustainable development and its context within the events industry and specifically with regards to the South African National Arts Festival. A pilot contingent valuation study conducted at the 2010 National Arts Festival determined that the average visitor was willing to pay an extra ZAR 2.30 (approximately US$ 0.30) per ticket for a recycling programme to be established to process the waste generated by the event. While the paper concluded that the theoretical basis of the study was sound, a larger sample size would have been preferred so as to enhance the model‘s predictive power
