Planktonic ciliates constitute a fundamental component among microzooplankton and play a prominent role in carbon transport at the base of marine food webs. How these organisms respond to shifting environmental regimes is unclear and constitutes a current challenge under global ocean changes. Here we examine a multiannual field survey covering 25 years in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina), a shallow, flood-plain system dominated by wind and tidal energy. We found that the estuary experienced marked changes in wind dominant regimes and an increase in water turbidity driven from the joint effect of persistent long-fetch winds and the indirect effect of the Southern Annular Mode. Along with these changes, we found that zooplankton components, i.e. ciliates... |

Strengths and weakness of remotely sensed winds are discussed, along with the current capabilities for remotely sensing winds and stress. Future missions are briefly mentioned. The observational needs for a wide range of wind and stress applications are provided. These needs strongly support a short list of desired capabilities of future missions and constellations. |

The knowledge of sea state and wind conditions is of central importance for many offshore and nearshore operations. In this paper, we make a complete survey of stochastic models for sea state and wind time series. We begin with methods based on Gaussian processes, then non-parametric resampling methods for time series are introduced followed by various parametric models. We also propose an original statistical method, based on Monte Carlo goodness-of-fit tests, for model validation and comparison and this method is illustrated on an example of multivariate sea state time series. The second-generation exploitation of meteorological satellite polar system (EPS-SG) C-band-wavelength scatterometer instrument (called SCA), planned for launch in 2022, has a direct heritage from the successful advanced scatterometer (ASCAT) flown on the current EPS satellites. In addition, SCA will represent three major innovations with respect to ASCAT, namely: 1) Cross polarization and horizontal copolarization; 2) a nominal spatial resolution of 25 km; and 3) 20% greater spatial coverage than ASCAT. The associated expected science and application benefits that led the SCA design are discussed with respect to ocean, land, and sea ice applications for near-real time, climate monitoring, and research purposes. Moreover, an option to implement an ocean... |

Backscatter values from scatterometers are commonly used to estimate wind field over oceans, their ability to monitor sea ice coverage, age and drift has been also demonstrated. Here, ASCAT backscatter coefficient has been processed for sea ice geophysical interpretation in order to increase the long time series of ice parameters already available. It has been shown that incidence- adjustment is mandatory for geophysical meaning, the backscatter maps enable the discrimination between multi year ice and first year ice, these maps can also be used as a basic product for sea ice drift estimation. Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is an active, bistatic remote sensing technique operating at L-band frequencies. GNSS-R signals scattered from a rough ocean surface are known to interact with longer surface waves than traditional scatterometery and altimetry signals. A revised forward model for GNSS-R measurements is presented which assumes an ocean surface wave spectrum that is forced by other sources than just the local near-surface winds. The model is motivated by recent spaceborne GNSS-R observations that indicate a strong scattering dependence on significant wave height, even after controlling for local wind speed. This behavior is not well represented by the most commonly used GNSS-R scattering model, which features a... |

The main objective of this paper is to thoroughly examine the remotely sensed wind characteristics around the coasts of Brittany as well as some more specific areas. The offshore wind power potential is then assessed. To achieve this objective, information on wind speed and direction with sufficient spatial and temporal sampling under all weather conditions and during day and night is required. This study uses more than 12 years (December 1999–December 2012) of consistent remotely sensed data retrieved from the ASCAT and QuikSCAT scatterometers to estimate the conventional moments and associated wind distribution parameters. The latter are comparable to wind observations from meteorological stations. Furthermore, combining in-situ and scatterometer wind... |

High frequency water sampling in the wind-exposed Vaccares lagoon revealed frequent and rapid changes in suspended solid (SS) concentrations in the water column. SS concentrations, sometimes higher than 800 mg l(-1), were significantly correlated with antecedent wind conditions. Mean wind velocity during the 5-33 h before water sampling or maximal wind velocity during the previous 8.5-22 h were good predictors of SS concentrations in the water column. Underwater irradiance at canopy level was modeled (r(2) = 0.66, n = 7584) using the SS calculated from the relationship between SS and antecedent mean wind velocity and the surface irradiance data measured at the weather station close to the study site. On the other hand, we have shown that in this... |

Tide gauge measurements recorded at two stations in the Red Sea, at Port Sudan from 1986 - 1994 and at Gizan for the period of 1992 - 1994 are used to analyze the sea level changes and tide along the east and west coast of the Red Sea, using the harmonic analysis (t tide). Meteorological parameters during the same period are used to study the response of the sea level and residual sea level to local and global forcing. The relation between sea level and forces are examined using the correlation and cross covariance analysis. The correlation and cross-covariance coe cients between sea level and sea level pressure at Port Sudan indicate that the sea level responds to atmospheric pressure as non-inverse barometer. The linear trend for the coastal area shows a... |

The impacts of transmission congestion and network investment on the development of the Australian wind energy industry have received growing attention from wind farm developers as well as relevant policy stakeholders such as the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC). There are many potential wind farm sites across the country with excellent wind regimes yet only limited transmission capacity. At least one wind farm in South Australia has spent a period following construction where its output was curtailed by transmission constraints (NEMMCO, 2009). Current market rules do not guarantee dispatch to an existing wind farm as more wind generation connects to the same transmission. Given the expense of transmission network extension and augmentation,... |

This paper examines how key characteristics of the underlying wind and solar resources may impact on their energy value within the Australian National Electricity Market(NEM). Analysis has been performed for wind generation using half hour NEM data for South Australia over the 2008-9 financial year. The potential integration of large scale solar generation has been modelled using direct normal solar radiant energy measurements from the Bureau of Meteorology for six sites across the NEM. For wind energy, the level and variability of actual wind farm outputs in South Australia is analysed. High levels of wind generation in that State have been found to have a strong secondary effect on spot prices. Wind generation's low operating costs will see it displacing... |

The objectives of this paper were to analyze the seasonal distributions of climatic and hydrological variables along the Lower São Francisco River, Northeastern Brazil, between the States of Sergipe and Alagoas, and further, to verify their relationships with the erosion of the right margin in Sergipe State. The investigated area comprises the sedimentary portions of the Lower São Francisco River, located at the Cotinguiba-Pindoba Irrigated Perimeter. Historical records of variables such as rainfall, river streamflow velocity, river discharge, wind velocity and the predominant direction were collected from a climatological station as well as rain and streamflow gauges located in the municipality of Propriá. The rainfall that occurs in the region is... |
