THE TOPPLING OF AN IRRIGATION CENTER PIVOT SUBMITTED TO WIND ACTION EFFECTS REA
Schmidt,Edomir M.; Meira Junior,Agenor D. de; Pedrali,Patricia C.; Valdiero,Antonio C.; Thesing,Nelson J..
ABSTRACT This research aims to improve the study about the stability of truss structures used in pivot irrigation, widely used due to the growing demand for food production, when submitted to wind effects. Specifically, it aims to verify the maximum wind speed supported by an irrigation center pivot structure when submitted to the load effects caused by wind gusts perpendicular to the equipment. In order to determine these forces and their effects on the irrigation equipment, computational numerical investigations were carried out using finite element bar models validated by measuring the natural frequency of the equipment in the field. A span was designed based on the existing standards in Brazil and the dynamic response of the structure was examined...

Long-term changes on estuarine ciliates linked with modifications on wind patterns and water turbidity ArchiMer
López-abbate, M. Celeste; Molinero, Juan-carlos; Perillo, Gerardo M.e.; Barría De Cao, M. Sonia; Pettigrosso, Rosa E.; Guinder, Valeria A.; Uibrig, Roman; Berasategui, Anabela A.; Vitale, Alejandro; Marcovecchio, Jorge E.; Hoffmeyer, Mónica S..
Planktonic ciliates constitute a fundamental component among microzooplankton and play a prominent role in carbon transport at the base of marine food webs. How these organisms respond to shifting environmental regimes is unclear and constitutes a current challenge under global ocean changes. Here we examine a multiannual field survey covering 25 years in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina), a shallow, flood-plain system dominated by wind and tidal energy. We found that the estuary experienced marked changes in wind dominant regimes and an increase in water turbidity driven from the joint effect of persistent long-fetch winds and the indirect effect of the Southern Annular Mode. Along with these changes, we found that zooplankton components, i.e. ciliates...

Survey of stochastic models for wind and sea state time series ArchiMer
Monbet, Valérie; Ailliot, P; Prevosto, Marc.
The knowledge of sea state and wind conditions is of central importance for many offshore and nearshore operations. In this paper, we make a complete survey of stochastic models for sea state and wind time series. We begin with methods based on Gaussian processes, then non-parametric resampling methods for time series are introduced followed by various parametric models. We also propose an original statistical method, based on Monte Carlo goodness-of-fit tests, for model validation and comparison and this method is illustrated on an example of multivariate sea state time series. Response of North-Atlantic Ocean circulation to atmospheric weather regimes ArchiMer
Barrier, Nicolas; Cassou, Christophe; Deshayes, Julie; Treguier, Anne-marie.
A new framework is proposed for investigating the atmospheric forcing of North-Atlantic ocean circulation. Instead of using classical modes of variability, such as the North-Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) or the East-Atlantic Pattern, we here use the weather regimes paradigm. Using this framework we avoid problems associated with the assumptions of orthogonality and symmetry that are particular to modal analysis and known to be unsuitable for the NAO. Using ocean-only historical and sensitivity experiments, we investigate the impacts of the four winter weather regimes on horizontal and overturning circulations. Our results suggest that the Atlantic Ridge (AR), NAO− and NAO+ regimes induce a fast (monthly to interannual timescales) adjustment of the gyres via...

Scientific Developments and the EPS-SG Scatterometer ArchiMer
Stoffelen, Ad; Aaboe, Signe; Calvet, Jean-christophe; Cotton, James; De Chiara, Giovanna; Saldana, Julia Figa; Mouche, Alexis; Portabella, Marcos; Scipal, Klaus; Wagner, Wolfgang.
The second-generation exploitation of meteorological satellite polar system (EPS-SG) C-band-wavelength scatterometer instrument (called SCA), planned for launch in 2022, has a direct heritage from the successful advanced scatterometer (ASCAT) flown on the current EPS satellites. In addition, SCA will represent three major innovations with respect to ASCAT, namely: 1) Cross polarization and horizontal copolarization; 2) a nominal spatial resolution of 25 km; and 3) 20% greater spatial coverage than ASCAT. The associated expected science and application benefits that led the SCA design are discussed with respect to ocean, land, and sea ice applications for near-real time, climate monitoring, and research purposes. Moreover, an option to implement an ocean...

Fluctuations of landings and environmental conditions in the north-western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lloret, J; Lleonart, J; Sole, I; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Most of the monthly catches and CPUE of 13 studied commercial species in the coastal waters of the north-western Mediterranean were significantly positively correlated with run-off of local rivers (Rhone and Muga) and the wind mixing index during the spawning season, with time lags of less than a year (transfer function analyses). Rhone and Ebre interannual fluctuations in run-off were synchronous and were related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), river run-offs being negatively correlated to high NAO episodes. The fluctuations of river discharges and the wind mixing index were cyclic but not related. The results showed that enhanced hydroclimatic conditions in the NW Mediterranean were favourable for the productivity of the fish and invertebrate...

ASCAT/MetOp scatterometer data : first results for sea ice study ArchiMer
Ardhuin, Fanny; Ezraty, Robert; Croize-fillon, Denis.
Backscatter values from scatterometers are commonly used to estimate wind field over oceans, their ability to monitor sea ice coverage, age and drift has been also demonstrated. Here, ASCAT backscatter coefficient has been processed for sea ice geophysical interpretation in order to increase the long time series of ice parameters already available. It has been shown that incidence- adjustment is mandatory for geophysical meaning, the backscatter maps enable the discrimination between multi year ice and first year ice, these maps can also be used as a basic product for sea ice drift estimation. Validation and analysis of ocean parameters using ASCAT data ArchiMer
Bentamy, Abderrahim; Ardhuin, Fanny; Croize-fillon, Denis; Queffeulou, Pierre.
This project aims to investigate the quality of ASCAT measurements as well as their use for oceanographic purposes. The accuracy of ASCAT retrievals will be mainly based on the use of collocated data from moored buoys, numerical weather prediction models, and satellites. The resulting collocated data will be used to explore the accuracy of the geophysical model function which relates the backscatter coefficients to surface wind vectors, as well as to assess the quality of ASCAT vector winds at global and local scales. Once this objective reached, it will enable to fully utilize the MetOp data for oceanographic applications. They will contribute to evaluate various estimates of ocean surface flux parameters required to force ocean general circulation...

Surges, atmospheric pressure and wind change and flooding probability on the Atlantic coast of France ArchiMer
Pirazzoli, Paolo Antonio.
A statistical study of hourly tide-gauge records at Saint-Gildas, Saint-Nazaire, Port Tudy, Brest, Le Conquet and Roscoff, as well of three-hourly wind and air pressure records at Belie lie and Ouessant over the last 50 years, has made possible the definition of the main meteorological factors which are associated with the development of positive or negative surges. Recent changes in these meteorological factors indicate that atmospheric depressions and strong surge winds are becoming less frequent and that the ongoing trends of climate variability show a decrease in the frequency and hence the gravity of coastal flooding. However the highest sea surges of the last decades did not occur at the time of spring high tide. There is a significant statistical...

GNSS-R nonlocal sea state dependencies: Model and empirical verification ArchiMer
Chen-zhang, David D.; Ruf, Christopher S.; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Park, Jeonghwan.
Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is an active, bistatic remote sensing technique operating at L-band frequencies. GNSS-R signals scattered from a rough ocean surface are known to interact with longer surface waves than traditional scatterometery and altimetry signals. A revised forward model for GNSS-R measurements is presented which assumes an ocean surface wave spectrum that is forced by other sources than just the local near-surface winds. The model is motivated by recent spaceborne GNSS-R observations that indicate a strong scattering dependence on significant wave height, even after controlling for local wind speed. This behavior is not well represented by the most commonly used GNSS-R scattering model, which features a...

Spatial and temporal characteristics of wind and wind power off the coasts of Brittany ArchiMer
Bentamy, Abderrahim; Croize-fillon, Denis.
The main objective of this paper is to thoroughly examine the remotely sensed wind characteristics around the coasts of Brittany as well as some more specific areas. The offshore wind power potential is then assessed. To achieve this objective, information on wind speed and direction with sufficient spatial and temporal sampling under all weather conditions and during day and night is required. This study uses more than 12 years (December 1999–December 2012) of consistent remotely sensed data retrieved from the ASCAT and QuikSCAT scatterometers to estimate the conventional moments and associated wind distribution parameters. The latter are comparable to wind observations from meteorological stations. Furthermore, combining in-situ and scatterometer wind...

Short time scale changes in underwater irradiance in a wind-exposed lagoon (Vaccares lagoon, France): efficiency of infrequent field measurements of water turbidity or weather data to predict irradiance in the water column ArchiMer
Banas, D; Grillas, P; Auby, Isabelle; Lescuyer, F; Coulet, E; Moreteau, J; Millet, B.
High frequency water sampling in the wind-exposed Vaccares lagoon revealed frequent and rapid changes in suspended solid (SS) concentrations in the water column. SS concentrations, sometimes higher than 800 mg l(-1), were significantly correlated with antecedent wind conditions. Mean wind velocity during the 5-33 h before water sampling or maximal wind velocity during the previous 8.5-22 h were good predictors of SS concentrations in the water column. Underwater irradiance at canopy level was modeled (r(2) = 0.66, n = 7584) using the SS calculated from the relationship between SS and antecedent mean wind velocity and the surface irradiance data measured at the weather station close to the study site. On the other hand, we have shown that in this...

Tide analysis In The Red Sea; In Gizan and Port Sudan OceanDocs
Eltaib, Elfatih.
Tide gauge measurements recorded at two stations in the Red Sea, at Port Sudan from 1986 - 1994 and at Gizan for the period of 1992 - 1994 are used to analyze the sea level changes and tide along the east and west coast of the Red Sea, using the harmonic analysis (t tide). Meteorological parameters during the same period are used to study the response of the sea level and residual sea level to local and global forcing. The relation between sea level and forces are examined using the correlation and cross covariance analysis. The correlation and cross-covariance coe cients between sea level and sea level pressure at Port Sudan indicate that the sea level responds to atmospheric pressure as non-inverse barometer. The linear trend for the coastal area shows a...

The economics of transmission constraints on wind farms: some evidence from South Australia AgEcon
Boerema, Nicholas; MacGill, Iain.
The impacts of transmission congestion and network investment on the development of the Australian wind energy industry have received growing attention from wind farm developers as well as relevant policy stakeholders such as the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC). There are many potential wind farm sites across the country with excellent wind regimes yet only limited transmission capacity. At least one wind farm in South Australia has spent a period following construction where its output was curtailed by transmission constraints (NEMMCO, 2009). Current market rules do not guarantee dispatch to an existing wind farm as more wind generation connects to the same transmission. Given the expense of transmission network extension and augmentation,...

Renewable energy integration into the Australian National Electricity Market: Characterising the energy value of wind and solar generation AgEcon
Boerema, Nicholas; Kay, Merlinde; MacGill, Iain.
This paper examines how key characteristics of the underlying wind and solar resources may impact on their energy value within the Australian National Electricity Market(NEM). Analysis has been performed for wind generation using half hour NEM data for South Australia over the 2008-9 financial year. The potential integration of large scale solar generation has been modelled using direct normal solar radiant energy measurements from the Bureau of Meteorology for six sites across the NEM. For wind energy, the level and variability of actual wind farm outputs in South Australia is analysed. High levels of wind generation in that State have been found to have a strong secondary effect on spot prices. Wind generation's low operating costs will see it displacing...
