Segregation distortion in homozygous lines obtained via anther culture and maize doubled haploid methods in comparison to single seed descent in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Adamski,Tadeusz; Krystkowiak,Karolina; Kuczynska,Anetta; Mikolajczak,Krzysztof; Ogrodowicz,Piotr; Ponitka,Aleksandra; Surma,Maria; Slusarkiewicz-Jarzina,Aurelia.
Background The quality of wheat grain depends on several characteristics, among which the composition of high molecular weight glutenin subunits, encoded by Glu-1 loci, are the most important. Application of biotechnological tools to accelerate the attainment of homozygous lines may influence the proportion of segregated genotypes. The objective was to determine, whether the selection pressure generated by the methods based on in vitro cultures, may cause a loss of genotypes with desirable Glu-1 alleles. Results Homozygous lines were derived from six winter wheat crosses by pollination with maize (DH-MP), anther culture (DH-AC) and single seed descent (SSD) technique. Androgenetically-derived plants that originated from the same callus were examined before...

Field application of anerobically co-digested dairy manure and food processing wastes for a winter wheat cultivar Hokushin OAK
梅津, 一孝; 山縣, 真人; 岸本, 正; 谷, 昌幸; 林, 峰之; 三崎, 卓也.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of anerobically co-digested dairy manure and food processing wastes as an organic fertilizer, and to investigate the changes in soil nitrogen and grain yield of winter wheat (Hokushin) comparing digested dairy manure with chemical fertilizer. By the incubation test, it was clear that the NH4-N was almost converted into the NO3-N for four weeks. Over the period of 101 days, 15% of inorganic N was accumulated in the soil. Between grain yields where co-digested dairy manure and chemical fertilizer were applied, there were no significant difference, but protein contents in grain were higher in co-digested manure applied than chemical fertilizer one (p<0.05).

Optimal Nitrogen Fertilization Rates in Winter Wheat Production as Affected by Risk, Disease, and Nitrogen Source AgEcon
Roberts, Roland K.; Walters, Jeremy T.; Larson, James A.; English, Burton C.; Howard, Donald D..
Interactions among the nitrogen (N) fertilization rate, N source, and disease severity can affect mean yield and yield in conservation tillage wheat production. A Just-Pope model was used to evaluate the effects of N rate, N source, and disease on the spring N fertilization decision. Ammonium nitrate (AN) was the utility-maximizing N source, regardless of risk preferences. The net-return-maximizing AN rate was 92 lb N/acre, providing $0.52/acre higher net returns than the best alternative N source (urea). If a farmer could anticipate a higher-than-average Take-All Root Rot infection, the difference in optimal net returns between AN and urea would increase to $35.11/acre.

Őszi búza lisztek extenzográfos követelményei AgEcon
Pongraczne Barancsi, Agnes; Tarjan, Zsuzsanna.
Az elmúlt két évtizedben a hagyományos búzaminőség-vizsgálatok mellett ipari körülmények között terjedőben, míg laboratóriumi körülmények között szinte rendszeressé váltak a tészta nyújthatóságát célzó extenzográfos vizsgálatok. Apiaci igények miatt mindenképpen hangsúlyosak a szükséges minőségvizsgálatok! --------------------------------------------------------- There is now a growing demand for rheological examinations, primarily extensibility tests and tests for parameters gauging resistance to extension, in the international markets and especially in the Hungarian wheat export markets. Tests addressing the alveographical and extensigraphical parameters of winter wheat grown in Hungary help assess its alveographical and extensigraphical quality and...

The 2005/06 South Dakota Grain Marketing Patterns Study: A Grain Elevator Survey Report AgEcon
Qasmi, Bashir A.; Hamda, Yonas; Fausti, Scott W..
This study reports the results of a survey of grain elevators in South Dakota completed in 2007 and focuses on the marketing patterns for spring wheat, winter wheat, oats, barley, corn, soybeans and sunflower seeds for the marketing year 2005/06. During the year, elevators’ market share in South Dakota was 54%, 83%, 91% and 83% for corn, soybeans, spring wheat, and winter wheat, respectively. Contrary to reports for Iowa and Indiana, the increase in ethanol production in the state did not have an adverse impact on elevators’ market share for corn in South Dakota. In terms of volume, cash purchase, delayed pricing, cash forward contracts, and hedge to arrive contracts, collectively, accounted for more than 95% of each of the grain and oilseed purchased by...

Alveográfos mérések az őszi búza minőségvizsgálatában AgEcon
Pongraczne Barancsi, Agnes.
Magyarországon az utóbbi néhány évben kardinális szerepet kap a jó minőségű búza előállítása, mely mind elméletében, mind gyakorlatában jelentős felkészültséget igényel. Afajták eredményei tükrözik, illetve magukban foglalják a fajták eltérő évjáratban kifejeződött minőségét is....

Modeling agricultural production risk and the adaptation to climate change AgEcon
Finger, Robert; Schmid, Stephanie.
A model that integrates biophysical simulations in an economic model is used to analyze the impact of climate change on crop production. The biophysical model simulates future plant-management-climate relationships and the economic model simulates farmers' adaptation actions to climate change using a nonlinear programming approach. Beyond the development of average yields, special attention is devoted to the impact of climate change on crop yield variability. This study analyzes corn and winter wheat production on the Swiss Plateau with respect to climate change scenarios that cover the period of 2030-2050. In our model, adaptation options such as changes in seeding dates, changes in production intensity and the adoption of irrigation farming are...

An Economic Risk Analysis of Stocker Grazing on Conservation Tillage Small Grains Forage in Arkansas AgEcon
Watkins, K. Bradley; Hignight, Jeffrey A.; Beck, Paul A.; Anders, Merle M.; Hubbell, Donald S., III; Gadberry, Shane.
This study evaluates both the profitability and risk efficiency of grazing stocker steers on conservation tillage winter wheat pasture using simulation and stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF). Average daily gains are simulated for steers grazed on conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT) and no-till (NT) winter wheat pasture. Steer price distributions and prices for key production inputs such as diesel, fertilizer, and glyphosate are also simulated. Stocker steer net return distributions by tillage treatment are constructed and ranked for risk efficiency using SERF. The results indicate the NT system is the most profitable and most risk efficient of the three tillage systems, followed by the RT system. Both conservation tillage...

Az őszi búza réz-mikroelemtrágyás kezelésének gazdasági vizsgálata AgEcon
Reder, Orsolya; Csatai, Rozsa; Salamon, Lajos.
Magyarország talajainak jelentős része rézhiányos, így a három legfontosabb makrotápanyag (N, P, K) mellett az esszenciális mikroelemekre, köztük kiemelten a rézre is egyre nagyobb figyelmet szükséges fordítani. Ennek érdekében réz-mikroelem trágyákkal történő kisparcellás őszi búza lombtrágyázási kísérletekben három réztartalmú lombtrágya (réz-amin komplex, réz-szénhidrát komplex és réz-amin ioncserélt szintetizált zeolit) hatását vizsgáltuk az őszi búza hozamára és hasznára. Kisparcellás kísérleteinknél két fenológiai fázisban (bokrosodáskor és virágzáskor) történt a szerek kijuttatása különböző dózisok alkalmazásával, három éven keresztül. Az elvégzett kísérletek alapján a réz-mikroelem trágyás kezelés a minőség javulása mellett a hozamok emelkedésén...

FARM-LEVEL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUTHERN NEBRASKA FARMS/RANCHES WITH ANNUALLY-PLANTED CROPS AgEcon
Antle, John M.; Capalbo, Susan Marie; Heggem, Christine N.; Clark, Richard T.; Norton, Nancy A.; Selley, Roger A..
The information presented in this report represents data collected from farming and ranching operations in the southern two tiers of counties in Nebraska. This study was based on a random sample of 151 southern Nebraska farms that have annually-planted crop acreage. Information was obtained for the 1997 crop year. This data set is referred to as the MSU/UNL survey data. From the MSU/UNL survey data, the average size of the farming operations in the survey, in 1997, was 1,316 acres. Of these, 856 acres were planted to annual crops, and the remaining 460 acres included 61 acres in fallow, 29 acres in hay, 287 acres in range and pasture, 28 acres in CRP, and 55 acres in other uses. Operation size was largest in the west, due mostly to a large number of range...

Four-way data analysis within the linear mixed modelling framework Scientia Agricola
Studnicki,Marcin; Mądry,Wiesław; Derejko,Adriana; Noras,Kinga; Wójcik-Gront,Elżbieta.
Cultivars have to be evaluated under different crop management systems across agro-ecosystems and years using multi-environment trials (MET) before releasing them to the market. Frequently, data collected in METs are arranged according to cultivar (G), management (M), location, (L) and year (Y) combinations in a four-way G x M x L x Y data table that is highly unbalanced for cultivars across locations and time. Therefore, we present the restricted maximum likelihood method (REML) for linear mixed models (LMM) with a factor analytic variance-covariance matrix for assessing cultivar adaptation to crop management systems and environments based on unbalanced datasets. Such a multi-environmental trial system has been in operation in Poland for winter wheat...
