Precipitation variability within the West Pacific Warm Pool over the past 120ka: Evidence from the Davao Gulf, southern Philippines ArchiMer
Fraser, Nicholas; Kuhnt, Wolfgang; Holbourn, Ann; Bolliet, Timothe; Andersen, Nils; Blanz, Thomas; Beaufort, Luc.
Proxy records of hydrologic variability in the West Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) have revealed wide-scale changes in past convective activity in response to orbital and suborbital climate forcings. However, attributing proxy responses to regional changes in WPWP hydrology versus local variations in precipitation requires independent records linking the terrestrial and marine realms. We present high-resolution stable isotope, U-37(K) sea surface temperature, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning, and coccolithophore-derived paleoproductivity records covering the past 120ka from International Marine Global Change (IMAGES) Program Core MD06-3075 (6 degrees 29N, 125 degrees 50E, water depth 1878m), situated in the Davao Gulf on the southern side of Mindanao....

High-resolution migration history of the Subtropical High/Trade Wind system of the northeastern Pacific during the last similar to 55 years: Implications for glacial atmospheric reorganization ArchiMer
Cheshire, Heather; Thurow, Juergen.
Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California, is a restricted basin located under the present-day wet/dry subtropical divide (similar to 27 degrees N) and is ideally circumstanced for detecting variations in the North Pacific Subtropical High (NPSH)/Trade Wind system. Controlled by climate cell boundary displacement, NPSH midwinter location was the primary influence on timing and intensity of upwelling seasons in Guaymas Basin. Analysis of high-resolution X-ray fluoresence data and sediment fabric log from 75% laminated Core MD02-2517/2515, western Guaymas Basin, reveals systematic changes in NPSH behavior over the last similar to 55 kyr BP. Southward displacement of the wet/dry subtropical divide controlled upwelling-related diatom productivity, while sea level and...

A new perspective on West African hydroclimate during the last deglaciation ArchiMer
Parker, Andrew O.; Schmidt, Matthew W.; Jobe, Zane R.; Slowey, Niall C..
Widespread drought characterized the Heinrich 1 and Younger Dryas cold periods of the last deglaciation throughout much of Africa, causing large increases in dust emissions from the Sahara and Sahel. At the same time, increases in wind strength may have also contributed to dust flux, making it difficult to interpret dust records alone as reflecting changes in rainfall over the region. The Niger River has the third largest drainage basin in Africa and drains most of the Sahara and Sahel and thus preserves and propagates climatic signals. Here, we present new reconstructions of Niger Delta sea surface salinity and Niger River discharge for the last 20,000 years in order to more accurately reconstruct the onset of the Western African Monsoon system. Based on...

Study on vinasse dynamics in soil usin energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence with radioisotopic excitation Scientia Agricola
Simabuco,S.M.; Nascimento Filho,V.F..
The distribution of S, Cl, K and Ca along the profiles of two soils of different texture (Red Yellow Podzolic and Dark Red Latosol) treated with amounts of vinasse equivalent to 4000 m³/ha were studied using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence, observing a significant increase in the contents of these elements. The same effect was observed for Cu, Zn, Rb and Sr contents in soils treated with vinasse as compared to the control. The concentrations of Al, Si, Ti, Mn, Fe and Zr could also be evaluated but no significant variation was observed due to the high soil initial concentrations of these elements as compared to the low concentrations in the vinasse. Annular radioactive sources of Fe-55 and Cd-109 were employed for the excitation of these elements in...

Quantitative analysis by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence by the transmission method applied to geological samples Scientia Agricola
Simabuco,S.M.; Nascimento Filho,V.F..
Three certified samples of different matrices (Soil-5, SL-1/IAEA and SARM-4/SABS) were quantitatively analysed by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence with radioisotopic excitation. The observed errors were about 10-20% for the majority of the elements and less than 10% for Fe and Zn in the Soil-5, Mn in SL-1, and Ti, Fe and Zn in SARM-4 samples. Annular radioactive sources of Fe-55 and Cd-109 were utilized for the excitation of elements while a Si(Li) semiconductor detector coupled to a multichannel emulation card inserted in a microcomputer was used for the detection of the characteristic X-rays. The fundamental parameters method was used for the determination of elemental sensitivities and the irradiator or transmission method for the correction of the...
