Identification and utilization of proxy characters in extant families has been accomplished with success for fossil members of the Calappidae, Hepatidae, Necrocarcinidae, Matutidae, and Hexapodidae. The fossil and extant Raninidae have been revised using primarily hard-part morphology preserved in the fossil record although formal designation of “proxy characters” has not occurred. Hard-part characters can also be used to differentiate among members of the Atelecyclidae and the Cheiragonidae. Thus, the method of using proxy characters is demonstrably suitable for application to a difficult group like the Xanthoidea. |

A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Thus, this habit would seem to go for all five members of the genus. Data... |

Several families were added in the past in order to constitute the Xanthidae, but the boundaries between Xanthidae, Parthenopidae and Goneplacidae were diluted, and the classification of some genera doubtful. By this reason was made the analysis of a typical genus of each subfamily occurring in Brazil. 50 characters were selected and coded as (0) for absence and (1) for presence. The data matrix was analysed by computer programs NTSYS and NMIX. The phenetic analysis shows the Xanthidae as a good family, but the cladistic one (Wagner tree) split them in four families: Carpiliidae, Xanthidae (with the subfamilies Menippinae, Platyxanthinae, Xanthinae and Eucratopsinae), Eriphiidae and Pilumnidae (with the subfamilies Trapeziinae and Pilumninae).... |
