Occurrence of zearalenone in wheat- and corn-based products commercialized in the State of Paraná, Brazil BJM
Almeida-Ferreira,Giovanna Caputo; Barbosa-Tessmann,Ione Parra; Sega,Rose; Machinski Junior,Miguel.
The productivity of wheat and corn crops depends on climatic conditions and resistance against phytopathogenic fungi such as those of the genus Fusarium. Some species of this genus produce zearalenone (ZEA), a mycotoxin with hyperestrogenic effects. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of ZEA in samples of cracked wheat (n = 109), popcorn (n = 51) and corn grits (n = 50) commercialized in the State of Paraná, Brazil. Commercial samples of each crop were collected between September 2007 and June 2008 and analyzed by thin-layer chromatography. The method used for detection of the mycotoxin in wheat and corn derivatives presented a recovery rate of 94.5% and 99.5%, respectively, detection limit of 40 μg.kg-1 and quantification limit of...

The neem [Azadirachta indica a: juss (meliaceae)] oil reduction in the in vitro production of zearalenone by Fusarium graminearum BJM
Geraldo,Márcia Regina Ferreira; Costa,Christiane Luciana da; Arrotéia,Carla Cristina; Kemmelmeier,Carlos.
Zearalenone, a mycotoxin produced by fungi of the genus Fusarium, including F. graminearum, triggers reproduction disorders in certain animals and hyperestrogen syndromes in humans. Current research investigates three concentrations of neem oil extract (0.1, 0.25 and 0.5%) in reducing the production of zearalenone. Neem oil extract decreased zearalenone amount in the three concentrations but highest inhibition (59.05%) occurred at 0.1%.

Zearalenone adsorption capacity of lactic acid bacteria isolated from pigs BJM
Vega,María F.; Dieguez,Susana N.; Riccio,Belén; Aranguren,Sandra; Giordano,Antonio; Denzoin,Laura; Soraci,Alejandro L.; Tapia,María O.; Ross,Romina; Apás,Ana; González,Silvia N..
ABSTRACT The ability to adsorb zearalenone by five strain of lactic acid bacteria was evaluated: four strains of Lactobacillus spp. isolated from pig rectal swabs and one commercial strain (Lactobacillus rhamnosus). Several factors affecting the adsorption capacity were evaluated in order to improve the adsorption of the mycotoxin by bacteria. The stability of the zearalenone-bacteria complex was analyzed. In every case, bacterial adsorption capacity was higher than 40.0%. The strain showing the highest adsorption (68.2%) was selected for the following steps of this research. The adsorption percentages obtained after processing 6.5 and 7.5 mL MRS broth were 57.40% + 3.53 and 64.46% + 0.76, respectively. The stability of zearalenone-bacteria complex was...

Parboiled rice: chemical composition and the occurrence of mycotoxins Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Dors,Giniani Carla; Bierhals,Vânia da Silva; Badiale-Furlong,Eliana.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the incidence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB B1), deoxynivalenol (DON), ochratoxin A (OTA), and zearalenone (ZEA) in parboiled rice with respect to its chemical composition. Eight lots from five different brands of parboiled rice were collected in four samplings, at different seasons, until the amount of 32 lots. It was observed that: DON was present in 22% of the samples (from 180 to 400 ppb); ZEA in 19% (from 317 to 396 ppb); OTA in 12.5% (from 13 and 26 ppb); and AFB B1 in 9% (from 11 to 74 ppb). The results of the chemical composition were not different from those previously mentioned in the literature concerning parboiled rice. The ash and phenol levels in the contaminated parboiled rice samples suggested that those...

Efficiency of γ-oryzanol against the complex Fusarium graminearum growth and mycotoxins production Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
BEMVENUTI,Renata; RODRIGUES,Marcy Heli; FURLONG,Eliana.
Abstract The ability of γ-oryzanol against Fusarium graminearum growth and mycotoxins production were assessed and compared with the antioxidant properties in order to improve its application in food chain, beyond of the conventional. The γ-oryzanol extracted from rice bran and characterized by HPLC-UV and GG-FD. Its antifungal in vitro, effect on complex F. graminearum CQ244 (halo diameter, ergosterol and glucosamine production) and mycotoxin production (deoxinivalenol, nivalenol and zearalenone) were determined by an adapted method adapted. The antifungal activity of γ-oryzanol was compared with azoxystrobin and trifloxystrobin. MIC and specific inhibitory effects (%inhibition µg γ-oryzanol-1) were also estimated. The antioxidant activity of the...

Effect of Zearalenone Administrated at Late Gestation Days on Fertility of The F-1 Offspring in Swiss webster (Mus musculus) International Journal of Morphology
Irnidayanti,Yulia.
Zearalenonesolution was given to dams micesubcutaneouslyat a dose of30 mg/kg body weightat the age ofpregnancy 13 to 18 days.Control micewere given only sesameoil. Furthermore, damsmice were allowed todeliver their litter and pups were weanedon 21 days of age. The live birth index andviability of the F-1 offspring were recorded. Determination of fertility of the F-1 offspring were undertaken by mating interlitters. On days 18 of gestation, the F-1 offspring were killed by cervical dislocation. The observation was performed on the number of live or dead fetus, embryo resorption, the number of implantation and the percentage of gestation loss. The result revealed that administration of zearalenone on days 13 to 18 of gestation caused a significant decreasein...
