Új paradigma az agrárgazdaságban: alkalmazkodás a globális kihívásokhoz AgEcon
Csete, Laszlo.
Ezért szükségszerű a globális kihívásokhoz való előrelátó alkalmazkodás kutatása, nevezetesen a klímaváltozás, a fenntarthatóság és a globalizáció kihívásaihoz, melyek egyenként is számtalan kutatási...

Accession to the World Trade Organisation: Challenges and Prospects for the Least-developed Countries (LDCs) AgEcon
Delelegn, Mussie.
A significant number of countries - many of which are least-developed countries (LDCs) - are not members of the multilateral trading system (MTS) as yet, and for many the accession process has taken an undesirably long period of time to complete. This lack of participation has important implications for national and global policy making in the field of international trade. However, there is a growing tendency to disregard accession challenges and difficulties facing the weakest members of the international community - the LDCs. The main purposes of this article are to a) discuss the substantive, normative and institutional complexities and requirements surrounding the WTO accession process from the perspective of LDCs, b) assess the possible costs and...

Exporting Kenya's Horticultural Products: Challenges and Opportunities in The 21st Century AgEcon
Nyangweso, P.M.; Odhiambo, Mark O..
The horticultural export sector has experienced rapid growth since 1966 because of the active role by the private sector and minimum government intervention. The European Union is the largest consumer of Kenyan horticultural exports. Kenyan horticultural exports to the European Union accounted for 45 percent of the total exports in 2000. In recent years, horticultural export growth has declined. The quality of production has declined, following a reduction of the role of exporters in supporting production by small-scale farmers. This has reduced Kenya’s competitiveness in the horticultural export market at time when the sector is faced with increased competition from other producer countries. The reform of the European Union Common Agricultural Policy...

Sustainable agriculture in Indonesia: Facts and challenges to keep growing in harmony with environment CIGR Journal
Syuaib, M. Faiz.
The nature of agricultural production system in Indonesia is very diverse from shifting cultivation to intensive crop farming, from rain-fed to intensive-irrigated paddy field, from vegetables mix farming to monoculture industrial plantations, from subsistence small-scale farming to large-scale commercial plantation.  As the fourth most populous country in the world that is inhabited by 250 million people, agriculture plays a substantial role in Indonesian economy which generates close to half of total employment and accounts for about a fifth of GDP, as well as the very important contributor of export.  Notwithstanding the great potential resources and market demand, the sustainability of agriculture in the country remains challenging. The challenge is...

A glimpse of the future in animal nutrition science. 1. Past and future challenges R. Bras. Zootec.
Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Almeida,Amélia Katiane de; Atzori,Alberto Stanislao; Muir,James Pierre; Fonseca,Mozart Alves; Cannas,Antonello.
ABSTRACT If the world population continues to increase exponentially, wealth and education inequalities might become more pronounced in the developing world. Thus, offering affordable, high-quality protein food to people will become more important and daunting than ever. Past and future challenges will increasingly demand quicker and more innovative and efficient solutions. Animal scientists around the globe currently face many challenging issues: from ensuring food security to prevent excess of nutrient intake by humans, from animal welfare to working with genetic-engineered animals, from carbon footprint to water footprint, and from improved animal nutrition to altering the rumen microbiome. Many of these issues are most likely to continue (or to...

Is an HIV vaccine possible? BJID
Wilson,Nancy A.; Watkins,David I..
The road to the discovery of a vaccine for HIV has been arduous and will continue to be difficult over the ensuing twenty years. Most vaccines are developed by inducing neutralizing antibodies against the target pathogen or by using attenuated strains of the particular pathogen to engender a variety of protective immune responses. Unfortunately, simple methods of generating anti-HIV antibodies have already failed in a phase III clinical trial. While attenuated SIV variants work well against homologous challenges in non-human primates, the potential for reversion to a more pathogenic virus and recombination with challenge viruses will preclude the use of attenuated HIV in the field. It has been exceedingly frustrating to vaccinate for HIV-specific...
