Model analysis of environmental relations in a vegetable rotation experiment Organic Eprints

In a chapter which will be part of the final report from the Subproject 7 of the QLIF project (http://www.qlif.org/), the nitrogen relations of organic and conventional vegetable rotations are analysed using the EU-rotate simulation model. Measured data from the VegQure project are used, where a vegetable based rotation grown either conventionally, or organically using two different set of strategies (manure import v.s. cover crops and green manure).

ORGANIC POTATO CROPS ARE IMPROVED BY INOCULATING A MICROBIAL INOCULUM TO THE CUT SURFACE OF SEED TUBERS Organic Eprints

Potato seed tubers are usually cut into blocks to reduce seed cost, break dormancy and induce dominance. In chemical farming, the cut surface is usually treated with fungicides to avoid infection. In the present research, the cut surface of the seed tuber blocks was treated with a microbial inoculum mixed into bamboo charcoal powder and dried for a moment. Inoculating and drying the cut trace of seed tuber blocks induced activation of the antioxidant enzymes SOD and POD. Properly drying the cut trace induced osmotic adjustment, leaf turgor improvement, disease resistance and yield increase in the potato crop. Common humus balance methods give distinct inexact results and do not meet nowadays requirements in Germany. Outgoing from the method of KOERSCHENS et al. (2004) an improved, site adjusted, semi-quantitative method was developed for manual use in agricultural practice and consultation. In the validation and optimization process over 300 variants from 39 long-term field trials were used, which represent the most important site conditions of Central Europe (Germany). Einfluss verschiedener Zwischenfrüchte als Vorfrüchte für die Ertrags- und Qualitätsleistung von Silomais und Kartoffeln Organic Eprints

Mehrjährige Gefäß- und Feldversuche des Landesamtes für Umwelt, Landwirtschaft und Geologie in Sachsen zeigen, dass Zwischenfrüchte zu höheren Erträgen bei Silomais oder Kartoffeln führen können. Zudem konnte bei bestimmten Zwischenfrüchten eine deutliche Verringerung des Nitratgehalts im Boden nachgewiesen werden. Insbesondere der Anbau von Weißem Senf, Sommerraps, Phacelia und Welschem Weidelgras verringerte den Nitratgehalt um bis zu 75 Prozent des Bodenausgangsgehaltes. Ähnliche Wirkung zeigten das Landsberger Gemenge und ein Gemenge aus Phacelia, Buchweizen und Platterbse. Fungal population and diversity in organically amended agricultural soils of Meghalaya, India Organic Eprints

The effect of different organic fertilisers (farm yard manure [FYM]; vermicompost [VC]; plant compost [PC] and integrated compost [INT], i.e. a combination of FYM, VC and PC in a 1:1:1 ratio) on the population and diversity of soil fungi was investigated in a maize-French bean trial. Fungal populations were much higher in organically fertilised plots as compared to the control (CTRL) and showed a decreasing trend in the order FYM>PC>INT>VC>CTRL. Altogether, 122 fungal species and two sterile mycelia were isolated from all the plots of which 25 fungal genera belonged to Deuteromycotina, seven to Ascomycotina, four to Zygomycotina and one to Mastigomycotina. This leaflet will help organic farmers to overcome barriers and get started with on-farm composting. With minimal additional work, vegetable and arable farmers can upgrade crop residues to compost. Compost application can be integrated in the crop rotation and combined with reduced tillage. Also on livestock farms composting can offer added value. Composted manure is more stable, because the decomposition process has already partly taken place. By mixing other materials in the manure, the N/P ratio in the compost can be adjusted. Since 1980 a long-term experiment has been carried out to compare mineral fertilizers (MIN), composted manure (RM) and composted manure with application of biodynamic preparations (RMBD) at three different fertilizer application rates. The total C and N contents in the topsoil were significantly different between all three fertilizer types. 42.9 to 53.7 % of Nt was bound in 18 total hydrolysable protein amino acids (THAA) including asparagine and glutamine. Amino acid contents in the hydrolysates of the topsoil were significantly different according to fertilizer type: MIN < RM < RMBD. Sob manejo orgânico, foram avaliados, em Seropédica, RJ, os sistemas de plantio direto da berinjela(Solanum melongena) nas palhadas de Crotalaria juncea (crotalária), Pennisetum glaucum (milheto, cv. BRS 1501)e vegetação espontânea (pousio), em comparação com o plantio convencional (aração e gradagem ou enxada rotativa). Simultaneamente, foram avaliados três tipos de cultivo: berinjela em monocultura, em consórcio com crotalária e em consórcio com caupi (Vigna unguiculata, cv. Mauá). Não houve diferença entre os sistemas de plantio direto e convencional quanto à produção comercial da berinjela. A palhada da crotalária foi mais eficiente que a do milheto e do pousio para cobertura morta do solo e conseqüentemente o controle de plantas espontâneas foi maior....

Die Düngung nimmt in der Biologischen Landwirtschaft eine bedeutende Stellung ein. Ebenso ist die Behandlung der Wirtschaftsdünger eng mit der Entwicklung der Biologischen Landwirtschaft verbunden. Eine der häufigsten Behandlungsformen war und ist die Beimengung von Urgesteinsmehl zu festen und flüssigen Wirtschaftsdüngern. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wurden Gülle, Mist und Kompost von Milchvieh in 9 Varianten auf einem neu angesäten Dauergrünlandbestand angewendet. Anaerobic digestion of animal slurries and plant residues is a valuable technology to produce bioenergy and fertilizers in organic farming systems, while at the same time reducing propagules of weeds and parasites in the input material. However, the digestion changes the quality of the slurry by reducing its content of organic matter and increasing mineral nitrogen (N) levels. This may have profound impact on soil fauna and microorganisms as well as the biogeochemical processes they drive. Einfluss einer Schwefeldüngung zu Kleegras auf Pflanzengehalte, Leguminosenanteil und Ertrag auf einem Sandstandort Organic Eprints

Auf dem ökologischen Versuchsfeld am Standort Gülzow wurde in zwei Feldversuchen (2013-2018) der Effekt einer Schwefeldüngung im Kleegras getestet. Schwefelmenge, Ausbringungszeit und Düngerart wurden während des Versuchszeitraumes variiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten wenige Wochen nach der Düngung einen Anstieg der Schwefelgehalt im Boden. Mit Hilfe der Schwefeldüngung konnte in der Regel sowohl der Leguminosenanteil gesteigert als auch der Schwefel- und Proteingehalt in den Pflanzen erhöht werden. Der Trockenmasseertrag stieg besonders durch Sulfatdüngung im Frühjahr an. Nach Düngung mit elementarem Schwefel waren kaum Effekte nachweisbar.

L’essai a été réalisé sur la culture du haricot vert pour étudier l’effet de la fertilisation organique sur le rendement et la qualité des semences produites et sur les caractéristiques chimiques du sol.L’expérimentation a eu lieu dans une ferme biodynamique à Taroudant. Long-term stability and mineralisation rate of compost is influenced by timing of nutrient application during composting of plant residues Organic Eprints

The long-term nitrogen mineralization and stability of compost based on easily available plant residues was examined. Four different composts were prepared from wheat straw and clover-grass hay, one treatment receiving all material initially (100/0), two treatments where addition of 75% of the clover-grass was postponed for 3 weeks (75/25,3w) respectively 8 weeks (75/25,8w) and one treatment receiving only 25% of the clover-grass added to the other treatments (25/0). Mineralization and stability of the compost was followed for 24 weeks in leaching tubes, leached regularly by 0.01 M CaCl2. Forskning har gitt mye kunnskap om grønngjødslingsvekster og plantehakk brukt som jorddekke i radkulturer. Planteforsk og NORSØK har samarbeidet om å formidle resultater fra denne forskninga og vil prøve å få flere produsenter til å ta i bruk disse metodene. Statens Landbruksforvaltning(SLF) finansierte prosjektet "Jorddekke med plantehakk eller grønngjødslingsvekster- kombinert næringstilførsel og plantevern i økologisk landbruk" (2003-2004), og småskriftet oppsummerer erfaringene. Blant annet omtales avlingsnivå med ulike mengder og typer jorddekke, reduksjon i luketid og effekten av å dekke plantehakket med annet materiale (jord, torv) diskuteres.

Adopting measures to increment soil levels of organic matter and biological activity is key when an agrosystem is going to be converted to organic management. Nutrient reserves are increased and more easily mobilized, and soil suppresivity is enhanced.
