This report describes a new method for composting and its use for cultivation of plants in greenhouse. The composting is performed in a combined stable and greenhouse directly in the mixture of cow manure and wood chips under the cows – a compost barn. This method is known for example in USA, Israel and Netherlands. In Norway a newly constructed compost barn with 18 sucklercows was followed by four visits and tests during 2017 and 2018. The animal welfare was no issue. The focus was on compost quality for growth media and the plant growth performance. During summertime, when cattle was outdoor, tomatoes, peppers and squash were cultivated. Compost was analysed in the beginning and the end of season. Compost maturity was evaluated by different standards and... |

Objectives The feasibility study shall answer the following questions: Are there economical and ecological advantages of on-farm dry digestion biogas plants? How the construction and operation parameters of a dry digestion biogas plant influence environment, profit, and sustainability of on-farm biogas production? The aim of the feasibility study is to provide facts and figures for decision makers in Finland to support the development of the economically and environmentally most promising biogas technology on-farm. The results may encourage on-farm biogas plant manufacturers to develop and market dry anaerobic digestion technology as a complementary technology. This technology may be a competitive alternative for farms using a dry manure chain or even... |

Different organic wastes (waste of tomato leaves and stems, sheep manure, olive mill waste and melon waste) were mixed with different proportions for different C/N ratio to make better use of tomato waste as it constitutes the majority of horticultural waste in the Souss-Massa region (south-western of Morocco). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of C/N ratio on the physicochemical parameters during aerobic composting process (temperature, relative humidity, pH, EC...), and the quality of the compost. The effect of each produced compost was also tested by its incorporation at different rates into sandy soil. The four studied C/N ratios (treatments) were: C/N=25; C/N=30; C/N=35 and C/N=40. Results revealed that the treatment C/N=35 has... |

The assemblages of microbial (bacteria and fungi), microfaunal (protozoa and nematodes) and mesofaunal (microarthropods) populations were studied in decomposing root residues from hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) and rye (Secale cereale L.) in a litterbag field experiment. Litterbags containing vetch or rye root residues were buried in soil at the same day as either vetch or rye winter catch crops were incorporated into the field soil from which the materials were gathered. The litterbags were sampled after 6 weeks in the field. In vetch, bacterial and fungal biomasses were similar whereas fungi dominated microbial biomass in rye. The biomass of the bacterial consuming fauna dominated by nematodes and microarthropods was similar to the biomass of bacteria... |

Earthworms are one of the most important soil macrofaunal groups, and they play a major role in agricultural ecosystems. Agricultural practices, such as reduced tillage, the use of green manures and organic fertilization, can be beneficial for earthworm populations in agricultural systems. However, under a Mediterranean climate, not much is known regarding their response to agricultural management. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of tillage type, organic fertilization, and green manures on the density and biomass of earthworms in organic arable dryland. The trial was conducted in a four-year crop rotation with a complete factorial design that combined tillage system (mouldboard ploughing vs. chisel), fertilization (composted farmyard... |

Significant differences in earthworm populations and soil properties were found in three sections of a farm at Haughley in Suffolk that, since 1939, had either an organic, a mixed conventional, or a stockless intensive arable regime. Compared with the mean earthworm population of a 1,000 year old permanent pasture of 424.0 m-2; an organic field had 178.6 m-2; a mixed field 97.5 m-2; and a stockless field 100.0 m-2. Species recorded were: Allolobophora chlorotica, accounting for most of the increase in the organic section; Aporrectodea caliginosa, dominant in the stockless section; Aporrectodea icterica; Ap. longa; Ap. nocturna; Ap. rosea; and Lumbricus terrestris. Soil analyses showed the organic soil had higher moisture, organic C, and mineral N, P,... |

Soil management in Organic Agriculture (OA) aims to improve the soil fertility (SF) supplying exogenous Organic Matter (OM) with composted and not – composted material. Hence, a two-year field experiment was carried out on a experimental farm of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB) in Apulia Region, Italy, to evaluate the effects, on organically cultivated plant growth and quality (as nitrate accumulation – nitr), of Compost (Comp) also in comparison to commercial organic fertilizers. Our investigations, in particular, aimed to evaluate the influence of Comp on Broccoli crop (Brassica oleracea var. Italica) cultivar Canoe and two varieties of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Mill var. Vespro and Multiplo). However, despite our broad results,... |
