Assessment of the effectiveness of maize seed assistance to vulnerable farm households in Zimbabwe AgEcon
Langyintuo, Augustine S.; Setimela, Peter S..
The publication describes outcomes of a study to assess the effectiveness of a large-scale crop seed relief effort in Zimbabwe during 2003-07. Aims of the effort, which was supported by the British Department for International Development (DfID) and coordinated by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) regional office in Harare, included broader diffusion of open-pollinated maize varieties (OPVs), as opposed to hybrids. Based on the findings of the study, the authors recommend that, to increase benefits to vulnerable groups, participants in such efforts should effectively disseminate information on selecting and recycling seed, supported by training and field demonstrations, and should target relatively well-endowed farmers initially. Recommendations...

Regional Fishery Management Organization as Games in Coalitional Form AgEcon
Do, Kim Hang Pham; Folmer, Henk.
This paper examines how a Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) might successfully achieve effective control of a high seas fishery in the context of partial cooperation. We analyse the feasible allocations of property rights among members of a given RFMO and coalitions of potential entrants. We demonstrate that the modified Shapley value is an appropriate device for the division of the gains from both partial and full cooperations.

A STUDY OF RICE PRICES AgEcon
Kiet, Nguyen Tang.
This paper tries to study rice price movements and relationships that might exist between rice prices of different selected countries; furthermore, some demand relations for rice will be constructed. Factors influencing consumption such as changes in population and incomes will also be discussed. The period under study will be from after the Second World War to 1960. Rice price fluctuations can be observed from year to year both in local markets and in international trade. This is due to differing demand and supply conditions. On the one hand, production has greatly fluctuated, because of acreage and yield variations; on the other, rice consumption has changed patterns in many countries.

Optimale gewaskeuse- en bemarkingstrategiee vir graanprodusente in Suid-Afrika AgEcon
Gronum, C.F.; van Schalkwyk, Herman D..
After the deregulation of the South-African agricultural marketing boards, producers are responsible for their own marketing. Various marketing options emerged due to the new marketing environment and the producer needs to take a lot of information into account in order to make the correct marketing decisions. Ample literature exists on the advantages that marketing plans can provide for the producer such as the reduction of price and income risks. Productions cost forms an integrated part of a marketing plan and helps the producer to fix prices in order to run a profitable business. The model that has been developed enhances the producer to develop an optimal crop choice and marketing strategy, given his own unique situation as well as the characteristics...

2002 MICHIGAN TREE FRUIT BUSINESS ANALYSIS SUMMARY AgEcon
Thornsbury, Suzanne; Harsh, Stephen B.; Wittenberg, Eric.
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 18 Michigan tree fruit farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of sales from cherries, apples, and other fruits. The records came from Michigan State University's TelFarm/MicroTel project, the Farm Credit Service system, or by AgriSolutions in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial summary was completed on 2002 data including beginning and ending balance sheets, plus income and expenses. The data was checked to verify that cash and debt discrepancy were within an acceptable range. While considerable variation in the data exists,...

VÁLASZÚT ELŐTT A MAGYAR SZŐLŐTERMELÉS AgEcon
Varga, Istvan; Lefler, Peter; Markus, Monika.
Magyarország EU tagsága a hazai szőlőtermesztés és borászat számára lét-kérdéssé tette a „gazdálkodj globálisan, cselekedj lokálisan” elv szigorú és kö-vetkezetes alkalmazását, vagyis a világ szőlőtermesztésében végbemenő változá-sok naprakész figyelését. A tradíciókra építő, borvidéki jelleget (terroir) hangsú-lyozó, szabályokkal és rendeletekkel védett (esetleg korlátozott) európai szőlő-termesztés és borászat nap mint nap szembesül a „bor újvilág” kihívásaival. Elsősorban a déli földteke (Chile, Dél-Afrika, Ausztrália, Új-Zéland) és újab-ban Kína szőlőtermesztése jó minőségű, olcsó vagy közepes árfekvésű boraival túlsúlyba került a nagy áruházláncok borkínálatában. A sikert a jó ár/érték arány mellett az agresszív és sikeres marketing akciók...

Improved inputs use and productivity in Uganda’s maize sub-sector AgEcon
Godfrey, Okoboi.
This paper used the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) data set of 2005/06 to examine the productivity of improved inputs used by smallholder maize farmers in Uganda. Yield and gross profit functions were estimated with the stochastic frontier model. Results revealed a significant effect improved inputs use on yield but not gross profit. Moreover, farmers who planted recycled seed (of improved variety) without fertilizer obtained lower yield but the highest gross profit. Furthermore, if the opportunity cost of own land and labour inputs in maize production were imputed, overall, farmers made economic losses. Based on the prevailing farmers’ production technology and market conditions, maize cultivation in the range of 2‐3 ha was found to give optimum...

Representing the production structure of South African agriculture AgEcon
Poonyth, Daneswar; van Zyl, Johan.
This paper evaluates the production structure of the South African agricultural sector for the period 1970-1998, using a translog function. The results show that the production structure is best represented by production technology that is Hicks-neutral and homothetic. This information is useful in evaluating the results of previous research on the structure of South African agricultural production, particularly relatively recent research on elasticities of substitution. In addition, it also provides the basis for meaningful future analysis of aspects related to the production structure of agriculture.

2011 Outlook of the U.S. and World Wheat Industries, 2010-2020 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2010-2020 time period using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to remain relatively healthy for the next ten years. World demand for both common and durum wheat are expected to remain strong. The price levels in 2010 and early 2011 will not be maintained because they are the result of a small wheat crop in the Former Soviet Union (FSU). It is expected that wheat production in the FSU will return to normal in the future. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to...

THE UTILITY OF MULTIPLE PERIL CROP INSURANCE FOR IRRIGATED, MULTIPLE-CROP AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Zering, Kelly D.; McCorkle, C.O., Jr.; Moore, Charles V..
The usefulness of FCIC multiple peril crop insurance on diversified, irrigated, high yielding farms in the Imperial Valley is examined. Production data and expected price and yield distributions were collected from thirty-two farm managers in 1982. Individual whole-farm net income distributions then were used to elicit their risk preferences. Participation in FCIC crop insurance for cotton, wheat, and sugar beets under the existing program and under several alternatives was predicted. Predicted participation never exceeds 25% of eligible growers. Low maximum yield guarantees and premiums inconsistent with individual yield experience are identified as factors limiting participation.

Representative Farms Economic Outlook for the December 2003 FAPRI/AFPC Baseline AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Outlaw, Joe L.; Anderson, David P.; Sartwelle, James D., III; Feldman, Paul A.; Schumann, Keith D.; Klose, Steven L.; Schwart, Robert B., Jr.; Womack, Abner W..
The farm level economic impacts of projected long term prices under the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (FAIR) on representative crop and livestock operations are projected in this report. For this report the FAIR Act will be referred to as the 1996 Farm Bill. The analysis was conducted over the 2000-2006 planning horizon using FLIPSIM, AFPC’s whole farm simulation model. Data to simulate farming operations in the nation’s major production regions came from two sources: - Producer panel cooperation to develop economic information to describe and simulate representative crop, livestock, and dairy farms. - Projected prices, policy variables, and input inflation rates from the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI)...

DEMAND FOR HERBICIDE IN CORN: AN ENTROPY APPROACH USING MICRO-LEVEL DATA AgEcon
Arndt, Channing.
Price responsiveness of herbicide demand in corn for farmers in Indiana'’s White River Basin using cross-section data from individual farms is estimated. Particular attention is paid to appropriate treatment of binding nonnegativity constraints. Estimation was first attempted using an approach to demand systems estimation suggested by Lee and Pitt. However, analytical and computational difficulties effectively preclude estimation by the Lee and Pitt approach. As an alternative, a maximum entropy (ME) approach is presented and discussed. Results from the ME estimator tentatively indicate limited response of herbicide demand to changes in own prices. The maximum entropy approach to demand systems estimation appears to have merit and warrants further attention.
