Dopplervelocimetric evaluation of portal vein as a diagnostic tool for portosystemic shunt diagnosis in dogs Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Cibele Figueira; Cerri,Giovanni Guido; Chammas,Maria Cristina.
The objective of this research was to verify if the study of portal hemodynamic parameters through duplex Doppler ultrasonography (DUS) is able to help to detect portosystemic shunt (PSS) and the shunted vessel origin. It was detected PSS in 20 dogs by abdominal DUS and confirmed at surgery or necropsy from March of 2004 until March 2007. Main ultrasonographic findings were: identification of a tortuous vessel shunting portal flow being: portocaval shunt (16/20 or 80%), esplenocaval shunt (2/20 or 10%), gastrocaval shunt (1/20 or 5%), portoazigo shunt (1/20 or 5%); 2) elevated portal flow velocity before shunt (17/20 or 81%), 3) lower portal flow velocity after shunt (17/20 or 81%), 4) turbulence in the caudal vena cava (10/20 or 47,5%) and 5) reduced...

Ferraro,G. C.; Moraes,J. R.; Shimano,A. C.; Pereira,G. T.; Moraes,F. R.; Bueno de Camargo,M. H..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of snake venom derived fibrin glue on the strength oftendon healing in dogs. The deep digital flexor tendon of the 5th digit of 24 thoracic limbs was partially sectioned for adhesive application. On the 7th, 15th, and 30th postoperative day tendons segments were removed for the clinical and biomechanical study. Results indicated that 62.5% of the tendons showed stump retraction and 20.8% moderate to excessive adherence, which affected gliding. The biomechanical evaluation showed that, over time, tendon healing gained progressive resistance for maximum traction and permanent deformations with satisfactory results on the 15th day for rigidity and resilience compared to the other two studied periods. Snake...

Electrochemotherapy treatment of oral extramedullary plasmacytoma of the tongue: a retrospective study of three dogs Ciência Rural
Cunha,Rúbia Monteiro de Castro; Lavalle,Gleidice Eunice; Caires,Carla Emanuela Tertuliano; Araújo,Roberto Baracat de.
ABSTRACT: Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EPs) are responsible for 2.5% of neoplasms in dogs. They are solitary, smooth, elevated, pink or red nodules, of 1 to 2cm in diameter. Cutaneous and oral extramedullary plasmacytomas in dogs are usually benign tumors, treated with local therapies. Prognosis is generally good. Recurrence and metastatic rates are low. Electrochemotherapy is a local treatment that combines chemotherapy and electroporation and shows objective responses of 70% to 94% with few local and systemic side effects. This scientific communication has the objective to report treatment of three canine patients with oral extramedullary plasmacytoma. Nodules were located on the tongue and patients were submitted to one or two electrochemotherapy...
