Thigmotactic responses in an open-field 56
Lamprea,M.R.; Cardenas,F.P.; Setem,J; Morato,S..
The goal of the present study was to investigate the role of thigmotaxis (the tendency to remain close to vertical surfaces) in rat exploratory behavior in an open-field. Thigmotaxis was investigated in a parametric way, using 24 experimentally adult naive male Wistar rats (210-230 g). Exploratory behavior was studied in an open-field (N = 12) in 5-min sessions and behavior was analyzed in terms of where it occurred: in areas surrounded by two, one, or no walls. Another group of rats (N = 12) was studied in an open-field with blocks placed near two of the corners so as to make these corner areas surrounded by three walls. The floor of the open-fields was divided into 20-cm squares in order to locate the exact place of occurrence of each behavior. The...

Reproductive ability and level of infestation of the Varroa destructor mite in Apis mellifera apiaries in Blumenau, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v36i1.20366 3
Carneiro, Francisco Estevão; Universidade Regional de Blumenau; Barroso, Gustavo Valadares; Universidade de São Paulo; Strapazzon, Roger; Universidade Regional de Blumenau; Moretto, Geraldo; Universidade Regional de Blumenau.
Varroa destructor mite causes mortality of Apis mellifera bees throughout the world. Its greatest damage to these colonies has been reported in European countries and North America. The impact of the mite is related to the climate and the bee race on each region in which the plague has been established. Varroa causes little damage to the colonies of africanized honeybees in Brazil and the levels of infestation are relatively small and stable. The reproductive ability of Varroa females was evaluated in pupae of workers of 17-18 days of age, obtained from eight beehives of africanized bees for twelve months. The average number of offspring (deutonymphs, protonymphs and eggs) each Varroa produced was 3.18 ± 0.19. The average total number of deutonymph and...

Death of dogs and cats during grooming procedures: a little known reality in Brazil 195
Maria, Anna Carolina Barbosa Esteves; de Siqueira, Adriana; Salvagni, Fernanda Aucielo; Maiorka, Paulo César.
With the growth of the pet market and its innovations, ownersof dogs and cats have increasingly alternatives for the health andwelfare of their animals. Establishments of bathing and groomingare becoming more popular, as many owners do not have thetime and ability to provide the adequate hygiene of their pets. However, many pet owners and even veterinarians are unawarethat dogs and cats can die during bathing or grooming, due tostress. Death related to stress may happen to sick or healthyanimals, regardless of breed, age or sex. In the bathing andgrooming environment, the presence of stressors is inevitable, but some rules must be followed to minimize the stress in theseanimals. This paper aims to provide information about the causeof death of these animals...

Blow Your Nose, Shrimp! Unexpectedly Dense Bacterial Communities Occur on the Antennae and Antennules of Hydrothermal Vent Shrimp 5
Zbinden, Magali; Gallet, Alison; Szafranski, Kamil M.; Machon, Julia; Ravaux, Juliette; Leger, Nelly; Duperron, Sebastien.
In crustaceans, as in other animals, perception of environmental cues is of key importance for a wide range of interactions with the environment and congeners. Chemoreception involves mainly the antennae and antennules, which carry sensilla that detect water-borne chemicals. The functional importance of these as exchange surfaces in the shrimp's sensory perception requires them to remain free of any microorganism and deposit that could impair the fixation of odorant molecules on sensory neurons. We report here the occurrence of an unexpected dense bacterial colonization on surface of the antennae and antennules of four hydrothermal vent shrimp species. Microscopic observation, qPCR and 16S rRNA barcoding reveal the abundance, diversity and taxonomic...
