THE INFLUENCES OF AVIAN INFLUENZA, BSE, AND H1N1 INFLUENZA ON ATTITUDINAL CHANGES IN MEAT SAFETY ISSUES AgEcon
Hsu, Jane Lu; Liu, Kang Ernest; Lee, Hwang-Jaw; Huang, Min-Hsin; Hung, Kelsey Jing-Ru.
Consumption patterns for chicken and eggs have changed since the outbreak of the H5N1 avian influenza (AI) throughout the world, but its potential impact on demand has not been thoroughly unveiled. Our study examines some important factors influencing behavioral changes and estimates their marginal effects by employing the censored regression model to survey data in Taiwan. Results showed that risk perceptions, overall knowledge and some socio-demographic characteristics were profound in determining changes in consumption of chicken and eggs. Public health education programs informing consumers about the AI threat may reduce their negative perceptions; therefore, consumption of chicken and eggs would not be decreased significantly enough to damage related...

The Politics of Scale, Position, and Place in the Governance of Water Resources in the Mekong Region Ecology and Society
Lebel, Louis; USER, Chiang Mai University; louis@sea-user.org; Garden, Po; USER, Chiang Mai University; po@sea-user.org; Imamura, Masao; USER, Chiang Mai University; masao@sea-user.org.
The appropriate scales for science, management, and decision making cannot be unambiguously derived from physical characteristics of water resources. Scales are a joint product of social and biophysical processes. The politics-of-scale metaphor has been helpful in drawing attention to the ways in which scale choices are constrained overtly by politics, and more subtly by choices of technologies, institutional designs, and measurements. In doing so, however, the scale metaphor has been stretched to cover a lot of different spatial relationships. In this paper, we argue that there are benefits to understanding—and actions to distinguish—issues of scale from those of place and position. We illustrate our arguments with examples from the...

The question of “evidence” in the emergence of evidence-based or evidence-aware policies in agriculture AgEcon
Laurent, Catherine E.; Trouve, Aurelie.
Evidence-based or evidence-aware policy approaches are used in many different sectors (health, education, etc.). These approaches are less common in agriculture but are gradually emerging. Analysis of debates surrounding this trend sheds light on the particular nature of the difficulties faced by public decision-makers who are willing to use available scientific knowledge. After examining certain misunderstandings which arise in the international debate over evidence-based policy approaches, this paper addresses two specific issues: (i) the problems of competing evidence for using knowledge in the design of public policies and (ii) the potential role of rationalization tools in a possible "depoliticisation" of public decision-making.

The relationship among knowledge of, attitudes toward and acceptance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) among Slovenian teachers Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Sorgo,Andrej; Ambrozis-Dolinsek,Jana.
The objective of this study was to investigate knowledge about, opinions on and attitudes toward and finally readiness to accept genetically modified organisms (GMO) among Slovenian teachers. On average, they have higher levels of knowledge in classical genetics, and poor levels of knowledge about modern issues in biotechnology, and their attitudes toward GMOs are not extreme. They make decisions based on the acceptability of a particular GMO and not on GMOs in general, following two patterns: genetic modifications (GM) microorganisms and plants are more acceptable than animals, and GMOs are more acceptable if they can not be used directly for consumption and produce something recognized as useful. The relationship among knowledge of, attitudes towards and...

The SMEs Performance by the New Technologies Application: The Case of Olive-Oil in Puglia AgEcon
de Felice, Annunziata; Martucci, Isabella.
Since the facility for exchanging information and sharing knowledge increases both the competitiveness of companies and worker productivity, the opportunities that information and communication technology (ICT) offers for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) cannot be neglected. From the SMEs, operating in traditional sectors, generally located in the South, we have selected those in the olive-oil sector, to measure the use of ICT and, in particularly, the development of E-commerce. The aim of this paper is to show the application and development of Internet and E-Commerce in the olive-oil sector of Puglia and to verify if companies are creating new network-like relations which can from a local productive system. In the first part theoretical aspects of...

Towards semantic knowledge maps applications: modelling the ontological nature of data and information governance in a R&D organization. Repositório Alice
PIEROZZI JUNIOR, I.; BERTIN, P. R. B.; MACHADO, C. R. de L.; SILVA, A. R. da.
In organizational management, it is highly recommended that data and information be adequately prepared to match the knowledge needed to be used in decision-making processes. However, faced with the paradigm of complexity that currently dictates the dynamics of modern organizations, there is still a search for operational solutions that allow agility and flexibility to corporate information flows to meet that desired condition. In this context, the concept of data and information governance presents itself as a fundamental premise because it systematizes, reorganizes and reorients each element of the organizational system (people, processes, structures, etc.) without losing the notion of its contexts and causalities. For this, in the conceptual modelling...

Transcriptome Analysis of Leaves, Flowers and Fruits Perisperm of Coffea arabica L. Reveals the Differential Expression of Genes Involved in Raffinose Biosynthesis. Repositório Alice
IVAMOTO, S. T.; REIS JÚNIOR, O.; DOMINGUES, D. S.; SANTOS, T. B. dos; OLIVEIRA, F. F. de; POT, D.; LEROY, T.; VIEIRA, L. G. E.; CARAZZOLLE, M. F.; PEREIRA, G. A. G.; PEREIRA, L. F. P..
Coffea arabica L. is an important crop in several developing countries. Despite its economic importance, minimal transcriptome data are available for fruit tissues, especially during fruit development where several compounds related to coffee quality are produced. To understand the molecular aspects related to coffee fruit and grain development, we report a largescale transcriptome analysis of leaf, flower and perisperm fruit tissue development. Illumina sequencing yielded 41,881,572 high-quality filtered reads. De novo assembly generated 65,364 unigenes with an average length of 1,264 bp. A total of 24,548 unigenes were annotated as protein coding genes, including 12,560 full-length sequences. In the annotation process, we identified nine candidate genes...

Transformations of agricultural extension services in the EU: Towards a lack of adequate knowledge for small-scale farms AgEcon
Labarthe, Pierre; Laurent, Catherine E..
This paper examines the consequences of the transformations of extension services for small scale farms. It presents the results of investigations embedded in regulation theory, which combine a comparative institutional analysis, statistical data processing (national agricultural census) and direct surveys. We describe the transformations in the EU and show that they make it more difficult for small farms to access extension services and to benefit from “front office” support (i.e. direct advice from extensionists). Finally, we emphasize that due to the modification of the knowledge production regime, these small farms may also suffer new specific adverse effects resulting from the re-organization of the "back-office" R&D activities of these extension...
