Collections in libraries: a collection of travel-books in the University Library Leoben Naturalis
Jontes, L..
Collecting seems to be a topic, which has become more and more interesting during the last years. It is not only the passion that seizes people of all parts of our society, it is more than some sort of eccentricity, it goes back to our roots, when we were hunters and gatherers to gain our living. Nowadays hunters and gatherers can be found in antique shops, but they are also to be found in museums and libraries. Collecting in museums has started with ‘Cabinets of curiosities’ (‘Kunst- und Wunderkammern’), which housed “wonders” ranging from rare shells and coins to narwhal horns, coral carvings and perhaps mummified mermaids. Libraries always collected not only the scientific books of their times, they always strove for the bigger, wider, the universal...

An overview of Chilean Marine Sciences Journals OceanDocs
Muñoz, P.; Smith, A..
The work provides a global vision of Chilean marine sciences journals, besides the problems that have existed in relation to their edition and publication. In spite of being serious publications with rich scientific content related to the study area, mainly along the coast of the eastern South Pacific, these journals have not reached the expected levels to be considered within the ISI system journals. With the purpose of obtaining an objective appreciation in regard to the presentation formats of the titles investigated, diverse evaluation guidelines were employed to evaluate format, editorial management and policies, characteristics of content, ISI impact factors, etc. Publication, visibility and diffusion problems that these journals have gone through to...

Report on diagnostic procedures and a definition of minimum requirements for providing information services on a national and/or regional level OceanDocs
Moulder, D.S.; Moritz, T..
It is suggested that the diagnostic procedures should include: an assessment of the needs of the state/region; the completion of a survey by the potential centre(s); and a site visit to the potential centre(s). Minimum requirements are set out for the required infrastructure, organizational needs, accommodation, mail and telecommunications, equipment, expertise and library and information collection.

MIM Publication Series Volume 4. Standard Library Directory Record Structure. OceanDocs
Moulder, D.S..
In this manual a Standard Library Directory Record Structure is proposed, for use in the preparation of databases of libraries and information centres. The structure is designed to be, as far as is possible, independent of the software used. Provision is made for additional fields for local needs. The structure incorporates the section of the Standard Directory Record Structure for organizations, individuals and their research interests which deals with organizations (MIM Publication Series Volume 4).

Information-related courses in a new international study programme in ecological marine management OMA
Nieuwenhuysen, P..
This contribution focuses on some courses that are related to information, in a specialized study programme in ecological marine management, named ECOMAMA. The ECOMAMA postgraduate specialized study programme is organized mainly in the faculty of science of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (V.U.B.) in Belgium. It started in 1997. It is international in the sense that many students come from developing countries besides a few students from Belgium. It is an inter-university programme in the sense that the professors come from many universities and scientific institutes in Belgium. Normally it takes two years to obtain the degree.
