| Fisheries and aquaculture are of major importance to the coastal communities throughout the Bay of Biscaye. Almost half of French fishermen rely on catches from the Bay which achieve and estimated first sale value of more than 525m annually. Moreover, emblematic species such as eels have an additional economic as weil as social value for coastal communities. Similarly, the main French shellfish rearing areas are located within the Bay of Biscaye. | La Punta Fort Williams, en la Isla Greenwich, fue el lugar seleccionado por el Programa Antártico Ecuatoriano para la construcción de la Estación Científica "Pedro Vicente Maldonado", proyecto que representa la decisión del Estado Ecuatoriano por incorporar la región Antártica al quehacer científico nacional. La estación, de tipo modular, está localizada en una plataforma plana y reciente, de terreno suelto a una altitud de 20 metros aproximadamente, constituida de sedimentos consolidados glaciomarinos. | Les seiches, poulpes, calmars et nautiles forment la Classe des Céphalopodes de l’Embranchement des Mollusques de grande taille, exclusivement marins. Leur croissance est rapide, leur arrivée à la maturité sexuelle précoce et leur durée de vie courte. Le poulpe a une très large aire de distribution incluant les eaux maritimes tropicales. Elle abonde surtout en Méditerranée, dans les eaux japonaises (Océan Pacifique) et dans l’Atlantique Centre-Est qui s’étend du Maroc à l’Angola.
