In vitro and glasshouse biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani with improved strains of Trichoderma spp. Ciencia e Investigación Agraria

Agr. 41(2):197-206. The potential of Trichoderma spp. fusants for the biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani was compared with the ability of their corresponding parental strains. Their effect was tested in vitro using two R. solani strains, 509 (AG 2-1) and 618 (AG 4). The highest inhibitions in growth in dual cultures were obtained with the ThF2-1 (89.79%), ThF3-3 (90.55%), ThF4-15 (91.75%) and ThF5-8 (77.67%) fusants on R. solani 509; only ThF2-1 was able to inhibit the growth of R. solani 618 (60.19%). Interceptação de Sinoxylon unidentatum (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

A ocorrência da praga quarentenária (A2), Sinoxylon unidentatum Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) foi confirmada e interceptada no Porto do Rio de Janeiro, em paletes oriundos da Indonésia. Constatou-se que o brometo de metila não foi suficiente para inibir a ação dos insetos nos paletes. Sugere-se, como medida de monitoramento, a instalação de armadilhas etanólicas nos locais de armazenamento e trânsito de madeiras ou material lenhoso.

THE IMPACT OF THE PHASE OUT OF METHYLBROMIDE ON THE U.S. VEGETABLE INDUSTRY AgEcon

Methyl bromide is a critical soil fumigant used in the production of several fresh fruit and vegetables grown in the U.S. The U.S. Clean Air Act of 1992, as amended in 1998, requires that methyl bromide be phased out of use by 2005. A mathematical programming model of the North American vegetable market indicates that the elimination of methyl bromide will have significant impacts on U.S. growers of fruit and vegetables that rely on methyl bromide for soil fumigation purposes. The schedule for eliminating methyl bromide has resulted in a 50% decline in methyl bromide availability and has resulted in significant increases in the price of methyl bromide. AN ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF A BAN OF METHYL BROMIDE ON THE U.S. WINTER FRESH VEGETABLE MARKET AgEcon

This study evaluates the economic impact of a ban on methyl bromide on the U.S. winter fresh vegetable market for six major crops: tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, and watermelons. Florida is the primary domestic supplier of these products. Mexico and Texas are the competing suppliers of the five vegetable crops and peppers, respectively. Leontief technologies represent both monocrop and double-crop production systems; linear inverse demand functions represent four demand regions in the U.S. and Canada. By increasing production costs and reducing yields, a ban on methyl bromide decreases Florida's FOB revenues by 54% and increases those of Mexico by 65%. Feasible Fumigant-Herbicide System Alternatives to Methyl Bromide for Bell Pepper Producers AgEcon

With the current methyl bromide (MeBr) system for producing Georgia’s peppers being phased out, alternative fumigant and herbicide systems for producers are analyzed. Using stochastic dominance analyses, two alternatives exceeding MeBr’s yield and financial efficiency were identified. A programming model, incorporating simulation-optimization techniques, generated optimal production and financial plans. Results indicate potential economic viability under alternative systems vis-à-vis the traditional MeBr production system. The Telone II and Chloropicrin combination with Metham potassium may offer a viable substitute for MeBr.

Effect of a Differentially Applied Environmental Regulation on Agricultural Trade Patterns and Production Location: The Case of Methyl Bromide AgEcon

It has been hypothesized that differentially applied environmental regulations create pollution havens, as firms will choose to invest in countries with lax environmental standards. Using a theoretical model of pest control adoption and an empirical spatial equilibrium model, we examine one such environmental regulation, a U.S. ban on methyl bromide, to determine if an agricultural pollution haven will be created in Mexico. Alterations in agricultural production location, trade patterns, and methyl bromide use are determined. We find that, under the assumptions held, Mexico will not dramatically increase its use of methyl bromide following the ban. Sensitivity analysis to this result is conducted.

Profitability Efficiency Analysis of Methyl Bromide Fumigants and Mulch Systems Alternatives for Pepper Production in Georgia AgEcon

With the goal of looking for the best fumigant substitute not only effective to production yield but more importantly to profitability and its excellent corresponding mulching option, this study used the complete factorial treatment analysis approach. Seven fumigant options and four mulching alternatives were included in the study and results showed that 1,3-dichloropropene plus chloropicrin and metam sodium (TELPICVAP) and smooth low density black on black polyethylene mulch (METAL) are the most profitable fumigant and mulch option.

California Strawberry Production and Methyl Bromide AgEcon

California strawberry growers were faced with the possibility of losing one of their most important chemicals, methyl bromide. Methyl bromide was believed to be involved in the depletion of the ozone layer and 162 countries had signed the Montreal Protocol, which would lead to an eventual ban of the chemical. The US EPA had scheduled the complete phaseout of methyl bromide by 2001. The case is ideal for teaching the application of stakeholder analysis to both undergraduate and graduate classes.

Phasing Out Registered Pesticide Uses as an Alternative to Total Bans: A Case Study of Methyl Bromide AgEcon

The short-term effect of pesticide bans generally is less efficient production, with higher consumer prices. The higher commodity prices provide windfall profits to producers of affected crops who did not need the banned pesticide, while those producers who were previous users of the banned pesticide may gain or lose, depending on price elasticities of demand and supply. Increased imports may dampen consumer prices and reduce previous gains made by some producers. A crop-by-crop phase-out, based on economic effects in place of an immediate ban on all affected crops, could reduce the adverse effects on consumers, producers, and the balance of trade, while still achieving many of the human health and environmental benefits of an immediate total ban of all...
