Evaluation of empirical and semi-analytical chlorophyll algorithms in the Ligurian and North Tyrrhenian Seas ArchiMer

The estimation of chlorophyll concentration in marine waters is fundamental for a number of scientific and practical purposes. Standard ocean color algorithms applicable to moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery, such as OC3M and MedOC3, are known to overestimate chlorophyll concentration ([CHL]) in Mediterranean oligotrophic waters. The performances of these algorithms are currently evaluated together with two relatively new algorithms, OC5 and SAM_LT, which make use of more of the spectral information of MODIS data. The Zona da Mata region in Minas Gerais State is configured in a traditional dairy production chain, whose grasslands have subtle dynamics in their phenology, and currently there is a strong concern regarding degradation and vegetative development trends. The Hurst exponents (H) are a potential tool to describe the evolution scale of time series, sensitive to short- and long-term memory. This study was aimed at developing an algorithm in the GIS that presents reliable results of the Hurst exponents for NDVI from MODIS imagery, using binary blocks method applied to R/S analysis (range rescaled) in the Gretl, an econometrics and time series software. Abstract - Previous research has established the usefulness of remotely sensed vegetation index (VI) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to characterize the spatial dynamics of agriculture in the state of Mato Grosso (MT), Brazil. With these data it has become possible to track MT agriculture, which accounts for ~85% of Brazilian Amazon soy production, across periods of several years. Annual land cover (LC) maps support investigation of the spatiotemporal dynamics of agriculture as they relate to forest cover and governance and policy efforts to lower deforestation rates.
