PERCEPTIONS OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED AND ORGANIC FOODS AND PROCESSES: NORTH DAKOTA COLLEGE STUDENTS AgEcon
Anderson, Jon C.; Wachenheim, Cheryl J.; Lesch, William C..
Perceptions of genetically modified (GM) and organic food among North Dakota college students were elicited and compared. Participants responded to one of two survey instruments containing identical wording except for reference to genetic modification or organic, after reading a primer defining the term used in their instrument. Participants' indicated their level of agreement with statements in the construct areas of health, environment, ethics, regulation, and risk. Responses were compared among survey instruments and to responses to previous surveys of Americans and of shoppers in North Dakota. Organic food was perceived as a healthier and safer choice. Organic practices were perceived to be more environmentally sound. Respondents expressed a...

PHIL FOSTER RANCHES: A CASE STUDY OF AN ORGANIC VEGETABLE FARM AgEcon
Brown, William J..
This paper presents a case study of an organic vegetable farm, designed for a senior undergraduate farm business management or agribusiness course, and is accompanied by a teaching note which includes suggested analysis. Phil Foster is the owner and manager of Phil Foster Ranches, a 252-acre organic vegetable, fruit, and nut farm in the Central Coast Valley of California. Until the last few years, most of the sales were to a number of produce brokers who sold the produce for Phil in the wholesale market on a commission basis. Believing he could get better prices by selling direct to retailers, two years ago Phil started a local delivery route to small grocery stores wishing to sell organic produce. The delivery route has enjoyed success, but now requires...

Potato Marketing – Factors Affecting Organic and Conventional Potato Consumption Patterns AgEcon
Yue, Chengyan; Grebitus, Carola; Bruhn, Maike; Jensen, Helen H..
In producing potatoes the treatment for disease and pests could be more difficult and costly for organic producers than for conventional. Hence, consumers’ attitudes and willingness to pay for organic potatoes need to be considered in a grower’s choice of production technologies. A bivariate probit model and cluster analysis were applied to survey data to evaluate factors that influenced Germany consumers’ consumption patterns for conventional and organic potatoes. The results show that consumers associate organic potatoes with healthy ingredients, trustable origin and food safety. But a lack of varieties and inferior appearance of organic potatoes limit consumer interest in the organic products. With regard to socio-demographics, consumers with higher...

Pricing an Extension Service for Organic Farmers and Growers AgEcon
Parminter, Terry G.; Botha, Neels; Tanner, Jon.
The organics sector is expanding rapidly and the Board of Organics Aotearoa New Zealand considers that the future provision of an extension service is needed to underpin the ability of producers to efficiently convert to organic systems and then to further develop the sustainability of their systems. This project commissioned by Organics Aotearoa New Zealand in 2008 considers four possible organisational structures for delivering such a service. The first possible structure is a complete extension service for organic producers that combines national coordination, standard setting and information management with a local problem-solving and sector development service. Option 2 is a more centralised option, especially useful for producers at the beginning of...

Product Differentiation and Market Segmentation in Applesauce: Using a Choice Experiment to Assess the Value of Organic, Local and Nutrition Attributes AgEcon
James, Jennifer S.; Rickard, Bradley J.; Rossman, William J..
Recently there is much interest among horticultural producers concerning the marketing of organically- and locally- produced food. Here we developed a consumer survey that asked respondents to choose an applesauce product from a list of products differentiated by price and four attributes. The products were differentiated by labels that described fat content, nutrition content, and whether the product was grown organically and/or locally. The survey was distributed to 3,000 residents in rural Pennsylvania and over 1,500 responses were collected yielding a response rate of 56%. Survey results were used to assess consumers’ willingness to pay for the product attributes in applesauce, and we found that consumers were willing to pay more for locally-grown...

Recently, there has been much interest among horticultural producers concerning the marketing of organic and locally produced food. A consumer survey was administered that asked respondents to choose an applesauce product from a list of products differentiated by price, and by labels that described fat content, nutrition content, and whether the product was grown organically and/or locally. Our analysis indicates that consumers were willing to pay more for locally grown applesauce compared to applesauce that was labeled USDA Organic, Low Fat, or No Sugar Added. Furthermore, we find evidence that increased knowledge of agriculture decreases the willingness to pay for organic and locally grown applesauce.

Production and evaluation of compost tea for cultivation of Amaranthus hybridus CIGR Journal
BAKO, TANKO; MAMAI, EZEKIEL AMBO; ISTIFANUS, AKILA BARDEY.
The application of organic fertilizer to the soil is considered as good agricultural practice because it improves the fertility of the soil and plant quality. The aim of the study was to produce compost tea using poultry droppings, cow dungs and water leaf (Talinum triangulare) in a ratio 5:5:1 and evaluate its effects on soil properties, growth and yield of Amaranthus hybridus. The study was carried out in Jalingo, Taraba State, North-Eastern Nigeria in July, 2019. The experimental variables include control (no treatment), 1 kg of compost per 10 L of water compost tea, 1 kg of compost per 20 L of water compost tea, 1 kg of compost per 30 L of water compost tea, 500 kg ha-1solid compost and 500kg ha-1 NPK fertilizer. The treatment combinations were done in...

Production system and harvesting stage influence on nitrate content and quality of butterhead lettuce Bragantia
Yosoff,Siti Fairuz; Mohamed,Mahmud Tengku Muda; Parvez,Anwar; Ahmad,Siti Hajar; Ghazali,Farinazleen Mohd; Hassan,Hamizah.
Leafy vegetables such as lettuce grown under different production systems may accumulate different concentrations of nitrate which may reach to the levels potentially toxic to humans. Moreover, nitrate accumulation varies in various plant parts and physiological age of the plant. Therefore, to determine the effect of production system and harvesting stage on nitrate accumulation and quality of butterhead lettuce, a study was conducted considering two lettuce production systems namely hydroponic and organic, and four different harvesting stages such as 35, 38, 41 and 44 days after transplanting (DAT). The experimental design was complete randomized design (CRD) with four replications. Hydroponic and organic systems performed similar in terms of yield,...
