Quality Dispersion Among Organic Milk Channels AgEcon

The most widely used measure of milk hygiene is Somatic Cell Count (SCC), where low SCC values indicate more wholesome milk. Dirt, often associated with grazing, carry bacteria and these bacteria can cause mastitis. Milk from cows with mastitis generally has higher SCC levels and cows with mastitis are most readily treated with antibiotics. Milk with high SCC is penalized by distributers as it is difficult to process and is not considered as wholesome in fluid markets. Grazing cows is common for many organic farmers. However, regulators prohibit antibiotic use under organic production. Slotting Fees for Organic Retail Products: Evidence from a Survey of U.S. Food Retailers AgEcon

This paper investigates the prevalence of slotting fees in organic packaged and prepared products, and identifies the factors that influence the relative size of slotting fees. Based on a 2009 survey of U.S. food retailers, we find that 31 percent of surveyed retailers accept slotting fees for organic packaged and prepared products. Previous literature on slotting fees provides arguments for two rationales, one focused on the role slotting fees play in establishing an efficient allocation of shelf space for new products and the other focused on how slotting fees can be used strategically to price discriminate or otherwise increase rents to parties with more bargaining power. Rising global demand for natural products whose production is harmless to the environment has stimulated the development of natural cosmetics and, within this category, organics (95% organic raw materials). The image of environmentally friendly production is one of the strongest attractions of organic products. Lip balm is a cosmetic product similar to lipstick whose purpose is to prevent lip dryness and protect against adverse environmental factors. Stewardship and Risk: An Empirically Grounded Theory of Organic Fish Farming in Scotland AgEcon

It has long been assumed ownership gives farmers incentives to act as stewards for the land. On this basis, quasi-property rights are granted to fish farmers to encourage them to manage risks to the aquatic environment. This paper offers an empirically grounded theorization of fish farmers’ perspectives on these issues. Data were gathered via field research with Scottish salmon farmers who had switched from conventional to organic fish farmers’ risk management strategies offer little support for the view that property rights automatically create incentives for stewardship of the marine environment.

"Clean and safe" agricultural products are an important issue among consumers, farmers and governments. Many developing countries develop their produce at various points along the ‘clean’ continuum based on production practices related to use of synthetic chemicals. Organic farming is applied to technologies with no chemicals or synthetic fertilisers used during production or processing.
