Milk samples from sixteen Norwegian Red dairy cows grazing mixed swards of either grass-red clover (GR) or mixed swards of sown and unsown species of grass, clover and other herbs (GCH) were collected during four periods. Both pastures were organically managed. Pasture botanical composition had no effect on milk fat, protein or vitamin concentration and only minor effects on fatty acid composition. Milk from GR had higher concentrations of the phytoestrogens equol, genistein and biochanin A than the milk from GCH. Concentrations of equol in milk from GR were higher than concentrations reported from experiments with red clover silage. The oxidative stability of the milk lipids was not affected by pasture type. |

Thirty-two dairy farms in Middle-Norway with different grassland systems (short-term (<4 years) grassland (S) or long-term (>7 years) grassland (L)) and different production systems (organic (O) or conventional (C)) were compared in a field study in 2007. In a principal component analysis on variables including farm details, botanical composition and chemical forage composition, the farms were separated into organic and conventional farms with the exception of one farm. Amongst the organic farms most SO farms were distinguished from LO farms. Concentration of forage crude protein was positively correlated with proportion of grass. Concentration of non-fibrous carbohydrates, in vitro digestibility and net energy lactation was positively correlated... |

Deposition of urine and dung by grazing animals is a strong source for N2O production and evolution in grass pastures. Investigations have shown that at least 20% of the annual losses of N2O from a grazed pasture may be associated with urine patches. Moreover, it is well known that urine depositions causes plant damage (scorching) and root death. It can therefore be hypothesized that organic C is released, which may further stimulate the production of N2O. In this study we have used combined 13C-pulse labeling and 15N-labeled urine in order to determine the amount of plant derived C respired in response to the urine application and assess the N2O emission factor from urine patches. Over a six weeks course the cumulated amount of CO2 evolved equaled the... |

In 2012 about 25 % of permanent Austrian grasslands were managed organically. At the same time the farms enlarged their average field areas especially in Alpine regions. In order to investigate intensification limits of montane meadows, an on-farm field experiment at the Upper Styrian Pöls valley was established in 2008. The triannual case study consisted of a balanced incomplete block design with 30 sub-plots at two autochthonous meadows of the Trisetetum association. These examined six treatments with different cutting regimes (2, 3, 4 cuts per year) and either slurry or solid manure for organic fertilization. Three years of investigation describe changes in coverage of grassland species as well as yield quantity and quality. The results show changes in... |

The whole vegetation assemblage of 60 relevés (4 m²) in a block design was examined at two mountainous hay meadow stands over a two-year period. All sites were situated at a certified organic farm, managed according to the guidelines of organic farming since 1995. According to the traditional management acreages are mowed two times per year followed by grazing and solid manure fertilisation in autumn. The effect of management intensity (two, three, four cuts per year and adapted fertilisation) was tested for coverage of most frequent species: Trisetum flavescens, Dactylis glomerata, Poa pratensis, Poa trivialis, Festuca pratensis, Lolium perenne, Trifolium repens, Taraxacum officinale agg., Carum carvi and Achillea millefolium. Our main interest was to... |

This Part describes the agronomic results of the multidisciplinary grassland study. This project concerned the effects of clover varieties and spring applications of animal manure on the yield of grass-white clover mixtures on a moist sandy soil (1993-1996). To be aware of the context of the findings in a multidisciplinary approach, attention was paid to: chemical soil fertility, damage to clover by slugs and soil borne nematodes. To increase the understanding of soil fertility, earthworm dynamics were also measured. At the end of the period the botanical composition of all plots was assessed. Factors measured besides total yield and clover yield were N, P and K yield. It was found that these ‘context ’-measurements were important for the overall... |

Several non-legume species have been tested for their suitability as cover crops, especially as constituent of mixtures with common vetch (Vicia sativa) and subterranean clover (Trifolium subterrananeum) in field trials performed in southern Germany from 2013 to 2016. We present selected results. The highest amounts of biomass were produced by Glebionis segetum, Anethum graveolens and Borago officinalis, which were also able to compete with subterranean clover and common vetch. All other tested species produced less biomass than the two legume species and were outcompeted in mixtures. |

A nine year crop rotation experiment was carried out in the Netherlands from 2002 through 2010 to (1) determine the optimal length of the grass-clover (mixture) and maize period in crop rotations and (2) to determine which crops should receive slurry application with priority in case the availability of cattle slurry is limited. The results show that dry matter yield decreased for all treatments over the experimental period, due to a decrease in plant-available N (from N fixation by the clover, applied slurry and mineralization of soil N). The relative yield increase (increase relative to the negative trend) due to slurry application was largest when all crops received slurry application, and the effects of slurry application increased over time. |
