UK and EU policy for approval of pesticides suitable for organic systems: Implications for Wales Organic Eprints
Bradshaw, N J; Stopes, C J; Little, A J; Hitchings, R; Buffin, D.
This study was commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to review the pesticide approval system in the UK and Europe as far as it affects the use of substances and techniques for crop protection by organic producers in Wales. WAG considers it important that the UK pesticide approval system does not present unnecessary barriers to the development of organic production in Wales. Key Recommendations and scope for further work · WAG should work with the Pesticides Safety Directorate to ensure that the development of pesticide regulatory policy at both National and European level takes full account of the needs of both conventional and organic agriculture and horticulture in the UK. · There is scope for WAG to support the development of a...

Organic Horticultural Seed Trials in Wales Organic Eprints
Robertshaw, Paul; Hitchings, Roger.
Under the organic standards, producers are required to use organic seed. However, a derogation can be obtained from the appropriate certification body that allows the use of (untreated) non organic seed where appropriate organic material is not available. There are, however, a number of barriers to the wider use of organic seed including: • Many of the industry’s standard varieties are not available in organic seed. The lifting of the derogation would oblige growers to use varieties of which they had little of no experience • By extension of the previous point, many popular varieties will no longer be available on the organic markets. It uncertain whether retailers, and in turn their customers, would accept alternative varieties • There is little...

Saatgutvitalität von elektronenbehandeltem Getreidesaatgut im Kalttest Organic Eprints
Matthes, Christoph; Geier, Uwe; Spieß, Hartmut.
To examine the use of low energy electrons as a method of seed dressing in ecologi¬cal agriculture, especially concerning its influence on seed vitality, samples of wheat, rye and barley were investigated by testing germination vigour under cold stress and by Bio crystallisation methods. Lowered germination speed indicated a decrease of seed vitality. Alterations of growth, like disturbance of gravitropism and an increased root:leaf ratio prove a significant impairment of the embryo by electron treatment. Results of biocristallisation and capillary dynamolysis indicate a loss of vital quality.

Wilhelm, Birgit; Patzel, Nikola.
