Efficient sampling of ground-dwelling arthropods using pitfall traps in arid steppes Neotropical Entomology

Pitfall trapping is probably the most frequently used method for sampling grounddwelling arthropods. While the capture of specimens in pitfall traps largely depends on the number of individuals in the sampled area, trap design and trapping effort for a given environment, can also affect sampling success. The aim of this study was to determine the best pitfall trapping design for collecting ground-dwelling arthropods in the wind-blown and cold arid steppe areas of Patagonia. Diversity of social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) in Cerrado fragments of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State, Brazil Neotropical Entomology

Sudies of species survey are important to know the available natural resources and to get useful information about the ecological characteristics of a specific area. There are not studies, on this issue, related to social wasps, in the Triângulo Mineiro region. The present study describes the diversity of species found in fragments of the cerrado region in Uberlândia, MG, and their temporal distribution. The field study was conducted from October 2003 to September 2004, and 43 samplings were carried out using active searching (24) and point sampling (19) methodologies. Evaluating leaf litter beetle data sampled by Winkler extraction from Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil. To evaluate the reliability of data obtained by Winkler extraction in Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil, we studied litter beetle assemblages in secondary forests (5 to 55 years after abandonment) and old-growth forests at two seasonally different points in time. For all regeneration stages, species density and abundance were lower in April compared to August; but, assemblage composition of the corresponding forest stages was similar in both months. Species composition and diel variation of a butterfly taxocene (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea) in a restinga forest at Itapuã State Park, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Zoologia

The composition and the hourly variation of butterfly species (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea) throughout the day and the seasons was evaluated in a 1,000 m² patch of sandy forest (Restinga forest) on a coastal plain at Itapuã State Park (30º22'S, 51º02'W), Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul, from July 2001 to June 2002. Butterflies were sampled by scanning and focal observations (adapted from ALTMANN 1974) carried out at successive 45 minutes intervals. This methodology proved to be effective in recording the presence and activity of butterflies on a small area. Influence of pitfall trap size and design on herpetofauna and small mammal studies in a Neotropical Forest Rev. Bras. Zool.

One of the most commonly used sampling techniques to capture leaf litter amphibians, lizards and small mammals is a set of pitfall traps with drift fences. However, there are still many speculations concerning the effectiveness of different designs of pitfall traps and the most adequate size of each trap. To address this problem, we conducted the first standardized comparison of patterns of species richness, rank-abundance, and community structure of leaf litter amphibians, lizards and small mammals for two trap designs (I and Y format) and three bucket sizes (35, 62, and 100 L) in a Neotropical forest. Sequential sampling of Euschistus heros (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in soybean Scientia Agricola

Integrated pest management programs for soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) must be based on efficient sampling plans for estimating the pest population. Based on the spatial distribution of the Neotropical brown stink bug Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1794) found on soybean, it was possible to construct a sequential sampling plan for the survey of this insect found on soybean. The experiment was carried out during two growing seasons, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, using the transgenic soybean cultivar M 7908 RR, in plots of 10,000 m² subdivided into 100 plots of 100 m² (10 m × 10 m). Abstract The state of Mato Grosso is the 3rd largest Brazilian state, is covered with three major Brazilian biomes, including the Pantanal, Cerrado, and Amazonia. To date, 449 ant species are recorded in literature for the state. In the present work, we documented the ants sampled along a fragmented landscape, in the municipality of Juara, in the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The ant species were captured with Pitfall traps installed in 20 trails with 10 traps in each (totaling 200). Our results show 151 species, belonging to 43 genera and eight subfamilies, of which 28 species were recorded for the first time in the state and five species recorded for the first time in Brazil. 荔枝園營養調查與營養診斷研究 Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]為探討與建立本省荔枝園營養診斷方法,以供肥培改進之依據與參考,本研究應用葉片與土壤分析,針對台中縣、南投縣市及彰化縣約30個荔枝園,於1997年起進行營養與肥培管理調查。品種主為黑葉,次為糯米滋。產量調查及葉片分析結果顯示,產量與葉片氮含量呈二次式相關且葉片氮含量大多高於二次式中產量最高點的葉片氮含量,尤其花期(包括始花,2-4月)葉氮高於1.90%以上時收量減低,由迴歸程式求得最高產量90%之花期葉片氮素含量範圍為1.50-1.90%。至於葉片磷、鎂、鈣及硼含量與收量之迴歸分析則呈正相關,其相關r值 (n = 52) 分別為0.498**、0.561**、0.444**、0.543**,達極顯著(l%)水準。收量60公斤/株以上之植株,其花期(包括始花,2-4月)至謝花著果(5月)之葉片養分狀況,通常磷、鎂、鈣及硼分別為0.09%,0.30%,0.90%及25mgkg -1以上。分析顯示供試果園土壤約85%以上屬極強酸性(pH<5.00)而土壤交換性鈣鎂含量甚低,分別低於500mgkg-1及50mgkg-1。檢討黑葉荔枝葉片之養分季節性變化,花期至謝花著果期間甚平穩,且由於花期之葉片氮、磷與收量之迴歸相關值較謝花著果與著果後一個月者(6月初)大,故選擇花期(2-4月)花穗下段成熟葉片為葉片營養診斷之採樣適期與部位。以葉片要素對收量之影響為基礎,並參酌國內外之文獻,黑葉荔枝葉片養分適宜濃度範圍定為:N:1.50-1.90 %,P:0.12-0.27 %,K:0.70-1.00 %,Ca:0.60-1.00%,Mg:0.30-0.50%,Fe:50-100 mgkg-1,Mn:100-250 mgkg-1,Cu:10-25 mgkg-1,Zn:15-30...
