Abstract The cultivation of papaya under greenhouse has become recently a profitable alternative for horticultural crops in different regions of the world, among them South East Spain. The objective of this work was to determine the sample size to evaluate fruit quality features in mature fruits of ‘BH-65’ papaya cultivated under greenhouse in Almería (Spain). With this aim, fruits were harvested at stage 2 in July 2013, and at the end of the production cycle in March 2014. On each occasion and when fruits reached maturation phenological stage 5, 26 fruits were evaluated for physical characteristics (weight, length, diameter, cavity width), total soluble solids content, and color attributes of skin and pulp. The optimal sample size was calculated using a... |

The aim of this paper was to update the sampling plan for analysis of mycotoxins in grains, formerly published by the author. The proposed alterations were based on the acquired experience on its application and on FAO recommendations. This update restricts the scope of the former plan and establishes a sampling plan for analysis of aflatoxin in peanuts and corn, by means of modified formulas, the minimum number of sacks or points (when in bulk) from which incremental samples should be drawn to make a bulk sample. Fractional exponents (square roots) of the formulas proportionally decrease the number of sacks/points to be sampled as the lot size increases. Operating Characteristic (OC) curves developed for in-shell and shelled peanuts and corn as well as... |

Evaluating the environmental and economic impacts of agricultural policies is not a simple task. A systematic approach to policy analysis would include investigating the effect of factors such as tillage practices, crop rotations, type and amount of chemical used, weather, topography, and other soil attributes, on observables such as amount of soil eroded or chemical leached into the groundwater. For comparison purposes, the effects of those factors on the response variable would have to be assessed under alternative policy scenarios. Because the number of factor levels is alarmingly high in most problems, and because policies to be evaluated are often not in place at the time of the study, practitioners have resorted to simulation experiments to... |

This document contains summary statistics of the NEI4 purse seiner fleet fishing in the Indian Ocean, as well as some information about how the data are collected. The sampling scheme, the sampling coverage, maps and diagrams representing the fishing pattern of this fleet by time and area strata. Data collection and the sampling programme for this fleet are the same as those used for the Spanish and French purse seine fleets. 'Research Group' Instituto Espanol de Oceanografia. The MEDITS programme started in 1994 in the Mediterranean with the cooperation among research institutes from four countries: France, Greece, Italy and Spain. Over the years, until the advent of the European framework for the collection and management of fisheries data (the Data Collection Framework. DCF), new partners from Slovenia, Croatia. Albania, Montenegro, Malta and Cyprus joined MEDITS. The FAO regional projects facilitated the cooperation with non-European countries. MEDITS applies a common sampling protocol and methodology for sample collection, data storage and data quality checks (RoME routines). For many years, MEDITS represented the most important data source supporting the evaluation of demersal resources by means of population and community... |

The quality of semi-detailed (scale 1:100.000) soil maps and the utility of a taxonomically based legend were assessed by studying 33 apparently homogeneous fields with strongly weathered soils in two regions in São Paulo State: Araras and Assis. An independent data set of 395 auger sites was used to determine purity of soil mapping units and analysis of variance within and between mapping units and soil classification units. Twenty three soil profiles were studied in detail. The studied soil maps have a high purity for some legend criteria, such as B horizon type (> 90%) and soil texture class (> 80%). The purity for the "trophic character" (eutrophic, dystrophic, allic) was only 55% in Assis. It was 88% in Araras, where many soil units had... |
