Sample size for the evaluation of ‘BH-65’ papaya fruits under protected cultivation Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Schmildt,Edilson Romas; Schmildt,Omar; Salinas,Irene; Hueso,Juan José; Pinillos,Virginia; Cuevas,Julián.
Abstract The cultivation of papaya under greenhouse has become recently a profitable alternative for horticultural crops in different regions of the world, among them South East Spain. The objective of this work was to determine the sample size to evaluate fruit quality features in mature fruits of ‘BH-65’ papaya cultivated under greenhouse in Almería (Spain). With this aim, fruits were harvested at stage 2 in July 2013, and at the end of the production cycle in March 2014. On each occasion and when fruits reached maturation phenological stage 5, 26 fruits were evaluated for physical characteristics (weight, length, diameter, cavity width), total soluble solids content, and color attributes of skin and pulp. The optimal sample size was calculated using a...

Sampling plan for the analysis of aflatoxin in peanuts and corn: an update BJM
Fonseca,Homero.
The aim of this paper was to update the sampling plan for analysis of mycotoxins in grains, formerly published by the author. The proposed alterations were based on the acquired experience on its application and on FAO recommendations. This update restricts the scope of the former plan and establishes a sampling plan for analysis of aflatoxin in peanuts and corn, by means of modified formulas, the minimum number of sacks or points (when in bulk) from which incremental samples should be drawn to make a bulk sample. Fractional exponents (square roots) of the formulas proportionally decrease the number of sacks/points to be sampled as the lot size increases. Operating Characteristic (OC) curves developed for in-shell and shelled peanuts and corn as well as...

Sampling Schemes for Policy Analysis Using Computer Simulation Experiments AgEcon
Carriquiry, Alicia L.; Breidt, F. Jay; Lakshminarayan, P.G..
Evaluating the environmental and economic impacts of agricultural policies is not a simple task. A systematic approach to policy analysis would include investigating the effect of factors such as tillage practices, crop rotations, type and amount of chemical used, weather, topography, and other soil attributes, on observables such as amount of soil eroded or chemical leached into the groundwater. For comparison purposes, the effects of those factors on the response variable would have to be assessed under alternative policy scenarios. Because the number of factor levels is alarmingly high in most problems, and because policies to be evaluated are often not in place at the time of the study, practitioners have resorted to simulation experiments to...

Sampling strategies to estimate suspended sediment concentration for turbidimeter calibration AGRIAMBI
Dalbianco,Leandro; Ramon,Rafael; Barros,Claudia A. P. de; Minella,Jean P. G.; Merten,Gustavo H.; Didoné,Elizeu J..
ABSTRACT The influx of sediments carried by rivers can be measured continuously using a turbidimeter through the indirect relationship between turbidity and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). However, this process is dependent on obtaining water samples with suspended sediments to calibrate the turbidimeter. Sampling can be carried out through different methods, resulting in errors and uncertainties in estimating the SSC. Four different possibilities for the composition of the calibration curve were tested in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the turbidimeter calibration for different sampling strategies. The study was conducted in 2012 and 2013 in two catchments in southern Brazil that had a strong sediment yield impact. The results indicate...

Sampling studies to estimate the HIV prevalence rate in female commercial sex workers BJID
Pascom,Ana Roberta Pati; Szwarcwald,Célia Landmann; Barbosa Júnior,Aristides.
INTRODUCTION: We investigated sampling methods being used to estimate the HIV prevalence rate among female commercial sex workers. METHODS: The studies were classified according to the adequacy or not of the sample size to estimate HIV prevalence rate and according to the sampling method (probabilistic or convenience). RESULTS: We identified 75 studies that estimated the HIV prevalence rate among female sex workers. Most of the studies employed convenience samples. The sample size was not adequate to estimate HIV prevalence rate in 35 studies. DISCUSSION: The use of convenience sample limits statistical inference for the whole group. It was observed that there was an increase in the number of published studies since 2005, as well as in the number of...

Self-sampling of cod in the Celtic Sea ArchiMer
Bellail, Robert; Peronnet, Isabelle; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Lamothe, Julien.
Since 2003, the application of restrictive TAC for cod in area VIIb-k has led some French Professional Organisations to manage their restrictive quota by imitations of landings by trip or period or by prohibiting the landings of the smallest commercial category. In consequence of that, le level of discarding has increased by high grading practice. In the lack of available and reliable data to estimate the level of discarding and the amount of discarded fish, the assessment of Celtic Sea Cod in Divisions VIIe-k has been in recent years more and more uncertain, especially in estimating younger year classes, for a fishery which can be qualified as a recruitment fishery. On a Professional Organisation (PMA= Pêcheries Manche-Atlantique) initiative and in the...

Stock assesments of the non-cultivated molluscs in the oyster culture area of Marennes Oleron ArchiMer
Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
A quantitative sampling was made on the non-cultivated molluscs of the soft bottom macrofauna in the bay of Marennes-Oleron. A stratified random sampling, including an optimal allocation strategy. provided adequate data to estimate abundance and biomass (total weight. dry weight and ash-free-dry weight) of each molluscan species. The main stratification factors were respectively the bathymetric levels. the different types of sediment and the differences between natural, oyster-free mud flats and cultivated areas. A Smith Mc-Intyre grab was used to sample the subtidal, shallow areas and the tidal flats as well. The total number of sampling stations was 370. The final estimation of the total weight of benthic molluscs was 14,400 ± 3,000 tons (at 95 %...

The French experience in sampling discards at sea in the European waters ArchiMer
Tetard, Alain; Gaudou, Olivier; Lespagnol, Patrick; Peronnet, Isabelle; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Vigneau, Joel.
This study covered a one year period using onboard observers (117 days at sea). The aim was to sample "métiers" known for their discarding side effects: fixed netting, inshore and offshore trawling. The objectives were (i) the collection of information on the demographic structure of the catches for the main exploited species and (ii) the identification of factors explaining discards, in order to find relevant management measures

The MEDITS trawl survey specifications in an ecosystem approach to fishery management ArchiMer
Spedicato, Maria Teresa; Massuti, Enric; Merigot, Bastien; Tserpes, George; Jadaud, Angelique; Relini, Giulio.
The MEDITS programme started in 1994 in the Mediterranean with the cooperation among research institutes from four countries: France, Greece, Italy and Spain. Over the years, until the advent of the European framework for the collection and management of fisheries data (the Data Collection Framework. DCF), new partners from Slovenia, Croatia. Albania, Montenegro, Malta and Cyprus joined MEDITS. The FAO regional projects facilitated the cooperation with non-European countries. MEDITS applies a common sampling protocol and methodology for sample collection, data storage and data quality checks (RoME routines). For many years, MEDITS represented the most important data source supporting the evaluation of demersal resources by means of population and community...

Use of a disjunctive kriging to model areas of high pelagic fish density in acoustic fisheries surveys ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre.
Schooling fish may aggregate in very high densities covering very small areas. Thus the probability of hitting such high-density spots during a large-scale sampling is very low. The sampling fluctuations of the tail of the histogram are thought to be very significant. The stock biomass estimate and its precision rely greatly on how precisely the tail of the histogram can be sampled. In order to acquire elements for improving survey designs and abundance estimators wc study here the relation in space that the high values have with the other values. A disjunctive kriging approach is used. Different quantiles of the histogram are coded by indicators. The spatial structure of each indicator and its spatial covariation with the others are studied by computing...

'Valencia' sweet orange tree flowering evaluation under field conditions Scientia Agricola
Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Rolim,Glauco de Souza; Azevedo,Fernando Alves de; Machado,Eduardo Caruso.
Since citrus flowering is a key process in citriculture and its evaluation is often difficult due to the canopy structure and field sampling, the aim of this research was to give some directions regarding the evaluation of flowering in field-grown sweet orange plants. This study was conducted in a citrus orchard of sweet orange plants cv. 'Valencia' [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] grafted on 'Cleopatra' mandarin (Citrus reshni hort. ex Tanaka) or 'Rangpur' lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck) rootstocks, with North-South orientation. Generative structures [buds, flowers and fruitlets (diameter < 3 cm)] were quantified weekly between August and November 2005, by using a 1 m² frame positioned at the middle third of plant canopy, sampling a volume of about 1 m³....

Variability of apparently homogeneous soilscapes in São Paulo state, Brazil: II. quality of soil maps Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Berg,M. van Den; Oliveira,J. B..
The quality of semi-detailed (scale 1:100.000) soil maps and the utility of a taxonomically based legend were assessed by studying 33 apparently homogeneous fields with strongly weathered soils in two regions in São Paulo State: Araras and Assis. An independent data set of 395 auger sites was used to determine purity of soil mapping units and analysis of variance within and between mapping units and soil classification units. Twenty three soil profiles were studied in detail. The studied soil maps have a high purity for some legend criteria, such as B horizon type (> 90%) and soil texture class (> 80%). The purity for the "trophic character" (eutrophic, dystrophic, allic) was only 55% in Assis. It was 88% in Araras, where many soil units had...
