Anandamide injected into the lateral ventricle of the brain inhibits submandibular salivary secretion by attenuating parasympathetic neurotransmission BJMBR

Our objective was to determine the effect of arachidonylethanolamide (anandamide, AEA) injected intracerebroventricularly (icv) into the lateral ventricle of the rat brain on submandibular gland (SMG) salivary secretion. Parasympathetic decentralization (PSD) produced by cutting the chorda tympani nerve strongly inhibited methacholine (MC)-induced salivary secretion while sympathetic denervation (SD) produced by removing the superior cervical ganglia reduced it slightly. Also, AEA (50 ng/5 µL, icv) significantly decreased MC-induced salivary secretion in intact rats (MC 1 µg/kg: control (C), 5.3 ± 0.6 vs AEA, 2.7 ± 0.6 mg; MC 3 µg/kg: C, 17.6 ± 1.0 vs AEA, 8.7 ± 0.9 mg; MC 10 µg/kg: C, 37.4 ± 1.2 vs AEA, 22.9 ± 2.6 mg). Localization of Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1) in Submandibular and Sublingual Salivary Glands of Mice throughout Postnatal Development International Journal of Morphology

In view of the fact that human marijuana users often show dry mouth symptom, the present study was attempted to examine the localization of CB1, which was originally identified in brain, in the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands of postnatal developing male mice by immunohistochemistry. In submandibular gland, CB1-immunoreactivity was positive in a majority of acinar cells in forms of granular appearance in their apical cytoplasm, while it was negative in the ducts at newborn stage. The immunoreactivity decreased in the acinar cells at P1W and no immunoreactivity was detected in the acinar cells at P3W and thereafter. Valproic acid, an antiepileptic drug, is a well-known teratogenic agent; its main target organ is the neural tube, though organ malformations have also been described. The aim of the present work was to analyze the effects of valproic acid on embryo/fetal oral structures: Meckel's cartilage, muscles of the tongue, and submandibular gland. Rats received a intraperitoneal injected of Valproic acid (300mg/Kg) on the 10th day of their gestation. Females were sacrificed on day 20 post coitus, and fetuses were examined. No gross malformations were observed.
