Umstellung auf Vollweidehaltung mit Kurzrasenweide am Beispiel eines Praxisbetriebes aus Oberbayern Organic Eprints
Linner, Alfons; Trei, Gerriet; Hörning, Prof. Bernhard.
Aim of the study was to demonstrate the principles of a low-input system for dairy cows (“full pasture system”) using an existing organic farm as an example (case study). This system might be well suited for organic farms (low use of concentrates, natural behaviour at pasture, etc.). Experiences of the conversion of the first summer at the farm were documented (changes in milk ingredients, grass development).

Eating quality of Holstein bull calves fed only grass or purely herbs matches that of concentrate-fed veal calves Organic Eprints
Therkildsen, M.; Jensen, S.K.; Vestergaard, M..
Organic meat production from Holstein calves born in dairy herds require that the bull calves are raised outdoor at least 6 months a year, and on large quantities of roughage in the diet. This study aimed at elucidating if Holstein bull calves fed either purely grass or purely herbs prior to slaughter would differ in meat quality traits, fatty acid composition and sensory profile and if they differed in quality aspects from concentrate-fed veal calves.

Comparing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in organic and conventional farming systems in the Netherlands Organic Eprints
Bos, J.F.F.P.; de Haan, J.J.; Sukkel, W.; Schils, R.L.M..
Results are presented of a model study comparing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in organic and conventional farming systems in the Netherlands. Calculations have been performed for model farms, designed on the basis of current organic and conventional farming practices. Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per hectare on organic farms are lower than on conventional farms, particularly in dairy farming. Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per Mg of milk in organic dairy farming is about 80 and 90%, respectively of that in conventional dairy farming. Energy use and greenhouse gas emission per Mg product in organic crop production is 5-40 and 7-17%, respectively higher than in conventional systems. The wide ranges found in crop production...

Towards a paradigm for the convergence of production, marketing and environmental protection in the field of the organic olive oil production chain- Conclusions from the BIOLMED project Organic Eprints
Ehaliotis, C; Martinis, A; Minotou, Ch.
The majority of innovations pioneered within/for the organic olive oil production (OOOP) chain may, and are, increasingly becoming, adopted by the conventional olive oil production chain, especially regarding cultivation, inputs related to plant/ecosystem protection and trade/promotion of specialized high quality products. Therefore the OOOP-chain may become a pioneering paradigm, for the implementation and convergence of agricultural production, marketing, sustainable rural development and environmental/biodiversity protection EU policies in the Mediterranean. Moreover, it appears that OOOP systems are increasingly becoming model systems for developing, applying and evaluating innovations that may have far more general applicability for Mediterranean...

Gesundheitserhebung bei Legehennen zur Verbesserung der Tiergesundheit durch Implementierung von Tiergesundheitsplänen Organic Eprints
Müller-Arnke, Ina; Rahmann, Gerold; Goeritz, Mareike; Koopmann, Regine; Schumacher, Ulrich; Plate, Hans.
This study was implemented to improve animal health of laying hens on organic farms. 20 farms were selected and animal health was evaluated. The farmers were inter-viewed about the housing system and management practices. Health and behavioural problems of the herd, as well as the incidence of endo- and ectoparasites were as-sessed. Housing facilities were evaluated and potential causes of health problems noted. Most of the farms have problems with damaged plumage and with the red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae). In most cases farmers know about these problems, but the reasons are difficult to find. This was the next step within the project (results not shown). Potential causes of problems were identified and farm specific animal health plans implemented to...

Phänomenologie der Natur: eine methodologische Erweiterung der quantifizierenden Naturwissenschaften Organic Eprints
Timmermann, Martin.
In order to secure the quality of organic agriculture and its products, there is a demand for alternative research approaches that are presently the subject of lively discussions. One of these approaches is called “the phenomenology of nature”. From a methodo-logical point of view and compared with quantifying approaches, the aspects of a nature-phenomenological approach, its scientific value and the use of the concept goetheanism are discussed. The phenomenology of nature approach can be linked to the quantifying natural sciences and employed in connection with them.

Lamb Production:grazing management, breeding policy and parasite control Organic Eprints
Hanrahan, J.P.; Good, Barbara.
Internal parasitic infection can pose major health problems in young livestock and this is particularly so in the context of lambs in organic production systems. In the context of sheep production on an organic farm the challenge to control parasite infection is especially difficult in situations where crop production is absent or a minor element of the whole farm system. Our investigations, to date at Athenry, have concerned an exploration of lamb production in an all-grass farming setting with particular attention being paid to the breeds employed and the seasonal patterns of gastrointestinal parasite challenge. This flock (about 110 ewes plus replacements) is wintered indoors and lambs in early March each year.

Bewertung von Pflanzenbeständen und Milchleistung in Ökobetrieben Nordwestdeutschlands Organic Eprints
Vormann, M.; von Borstel, U.; Leisen, E..
In order to produce high quality forages, the species composition of the grass sward is of special importance. A good measure for estimating the quality of grass swards is the so-called mean Futterwertzahl of the sward by Klapp (1965) which is further referred to as Sward Quality Index (SQI). On 56 organic farms the average SQI of the farm has been calculated and the yield proportion of different species of the sward has been calculated for different regions of Northwest Germany. Within 22 organic farms with grassland farming exclusively, a comparison of the milk yields (kg ECM/cow and year) and the mean SQI of the grassland has been calculated with special regard to the concentrate rates fed to the cows. In tendency the results show lower SQI in farms...

Zur Regulierung des Kleinen Fruchtwicklers Grapholita lobarzewskii Ragonot Organic Eprints
Kienzle, J.; Buchleither, S.; Scheer, C.; Zebitz, C.P.W..
Several products were tested for their efficacy in control of the apple seed moth (Grapholita lobarzewskii Ragonot). None of them had a good efficacy. With several treatments with Bacillus thuringiensis an efficacy about 50 % could be achieved. An early treatment before egg-laying seem to improve the results. Quassia extract (9 g Quassin/ha/m tree height) gave efficacy about 50-60 % even if treated only once. NeemAzal gave only moderate efficacy (about 40-50 %). Mating disruption method was effective if the populations were not too high when the treatements were started. With high populations there was no sufficient control in the first year of application.

Microbiological and organoleptic impact of three different technical procedures in order to prepare wine for bottling Organic Eprints
Blateyron, Lucile; Elichiry, Gisèle.
In order to establish the extent to which each of the technical sequences regarding the preparation of wine for bottling (3 final filtration thresholds: 0.65µm, 2µm and 5µm) were in keeping with the cellar objectives and to measure the analytical, microbiological and organoleptic impact on the wine for each sequence, over a one-year period, we monitored a red wine prepared according to the 3 methodologies. A low initial microbiological level (absence of Brettanomyces, Pédiococcus and Lactobacillus), combined with a stable active SO2 content between 0.4 and 0.5 mg/l, enabled analytical and microbiological stability of all the wines compared. The triangular tests performed by a panel of trained oenologists did not reveal any significant differences linked to...

Red clover for silage: management impacts on yield during the third year after sowing Organic Eprints
O'Kiely, P.; O'Riordan, E.G.; Black, A.D..
Red clover is a perennial legume considered productive for a limited number of years. This experiment quantified the impacts of cultivar, companion grass, harvest schedule and nitrogen fertiliser on crop yield in the third year after reseeding, and compared these to grass receiving inorganic N fertiliser. Herbage yield was increased in swards with red clover by including ryegrass in the seed mix, by not applying inorganic N fertiliser in mid-March and by adopting the early harvest schedule. Red clover cultivar did not affect annual yield.

Influence of different soil preparation techniques on organically grown strawberries Organic Eprints
Leona, Brockamp; Eis, Birgit.
From June 2005 till June 2007 different soil preparation techniques like chiselling and advance sowing of medicinal plants and green manuring were proofed for their influence on reducing plant losses of strawberries caused by root diseases like Phytophthora species and Verticillium dahliae. The variants were combined with potted plants and Frigos. The experiment took place on an organic fruit farm near Stuttgart, Germany, with the strawberry variety ´Elsanta´. Focused on root diseases, habit and yield chiselling combined with Frigos and green manuring combined with potted plants showed the best results. Generally the marketable yield was often below yields from conventional cultivation. This project is granted by Bundesprogramm Ökologischer Landbau (BÖL,...

Organic rice of Bangladesh: focus on disease control Organic Eprints
Hossain, Shaikh Tanveer.
Diseases play an important role in rice production. In modern agriculture, application of hazardous chemicals is a common practice allover the world. But organic rice production system does not allow synthetic agro-chemicals due to its adverse effect on environment as well as human health. Thirty six fungal, twenty one viral, six bacterial and six nematode diseases have been recorded in rice. In Bangladesh, 31 rice diseases have been so far identified of which ten are considered as major. Sheath blight, blast, bakanae etc. are the major rice diseases in Bangladesh. Organic amendment works effectively under organic field production. Many researchers have already reported that application of silicon (Si) and potassium (K) reduce sheath blight and blast...

The effect of different fertilisers on hygienic quality of lettuce Organic Eprints
Rattler, Sabine; Thiel, Barbara; Köpke, Ulrich.
Abstract – The effect of different fertiliser types (cal-cium ammonium nitrate, fresh farmyard manure, composted farmyard manure and nettle extract) on the hygienic quality of fresh and washed lettuce was tested in two trials in summer 2004 and 2005. The hygienic quality was described by total aerobic bacte-rial count and level of coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, Enterobacteriaceae. No Salmonella Enteritidis was detected in any sample. E. coli was isolated independent of the fertiliser type in low concentrations. The total aerobic bacterial count, the levels of Enterobacteriaceae and coliform bacteria tended to be lower after application of mineral fertil-iser but on a very low level. The washing process had no significant...

Anbauwürdigkeit von Blauer Lupine im Gemenge mit Getreide Organic Eprints
Winterling, Andrea; Ostermaier, Miriam; Uhl, Johannes; Urbatzka, Peer.

Pfeiffer, Barbara.
At the LVWO Weinsberg in 1998 and 1999 different scab-protecting-strategies were tested at the variety Jonagold. Some examinations were done about fruit-setting depending on additives to sulphur like algae, vitamin E or Kaliumpermanganat. The conditions of the leaves (damage by scab, intensity of chlorophyll) had a great influence on the number of inflorescences in the following spring. Positive effects by Kaliumpermanganat and Vitamin E were found. In 1999 was the russetting of the fruits higher than in 1998, all combinations with cupper were more strongly russetted than the control, limesulphur was similiar to the control.
