Wind wave modelling in shallow water: with application to the southern North Sea OMA
Luo, W..
Increased marine activities, particularly in areas of off-shore exploitation and coastal development, have created an urgent need for improved knowledge of wave conditions in the shallow near-shore regions. In this work, objectives have been made to investigate the effects of bottom friction, depth-induced wave breaking, and tidal motions on the wave evolution in shallow water, and to apply the wave model (WAM Cycle 4) to the Belgian coastal waters. Firstly, the effects of different bottom friction formulations on the energy balance equation were quantitatively investigated for fetch-limited shallow water conditions. It was found that the formulation of the bottom friction dissipation has a quite significant effect on the energy balance at shallower water...

Revisie van de Monocelididae Hofsten, 1907 (Platyhelminthes) OMA
Martens, P.M..
This study constitutes a revision of the Digonoporid Lithophora Proseriata which correspond to the Monocelididae sensu Karling 1966a. The revision is based on morphological and karyological investigations. Morphological research is performed on living animals as well as on whole mounts and sectioned material. For about 30 species the copulatory organs are reconstructed using serial sections. Karyological investigation consist of a and p karyology. Both morphological and karyological data are used for phylogenetic analysis and the new system proposed reflects the hypothesized genealogical relationships. Since the beginning of our studies, the total amount of species described for this group has increased from 81 to 133, 41 of which are described by us. In...

Steltloper populaties en macrozoobenthos in een veranderend estuarium: de Oosterschelde (Nl.) = Wader populations and macrozoobenthos in a changing estuary: the Oosterschelde (The Netherlands) OMA
Meire, P..

Verdonck, W..
In Europe. the interest in sea bass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) as a culture fish is fast increasing. This results in a rapid expansion of sea bass culture and of that of other marine fish species. such as seabream (<i>Sparus aurata</i>) and turbot (<i>Scophtalmus maximus</i>). In 1983 a research project was started, with the aim of culturing sea bass in the thermal effluents of the nuclear power station at Doel. In this way the possibility of producing valuable proteins is created while at the same time thermal effluents, normally dumped as waste heat, can be put to good use. The biology of the sea bass. In the Atlantic Ocean, the distribution area for sea bass ranges from Marocco to Norway. It is also found in the...

Ecologie van de vrijlevende mariene nematoden van de Voordelta (zuidelijke bocht van de Noordzee) OMA
Vanreusel, A..
This study forms part of a global research project, which aims to evaluate the effect of the Delta works on the ecosystem of the Dutch Delta. The Dutch Delta is the sublittoral region along the coast of the south of the Netherlands, from the Belgium border in the south to the Hoek van Holland in the north. Off shore, the area is arbitrary limited by the 10m depth line. From north to south, the Nieuwe Waterweg, the Haringvliet, Lake Grevelingen, the Eastern Scheldt and the Western Scheldt debouch into this part of the Southern Bight of the North Sea. As a result of the tidal currents and the thereon coupled transport of the sediments, a heterogenous pattern of banks and channels has evolved. The hydrodynamic regime and the bottom morphology have changed...

The implications of heterozygosity in the scallop <i>Placopecten magellanicus</i> (Gmelin) OMA
Volckaert, F.A.M.J..
In many instances, variation in phenotypic traits has been correlated with electrophoretic heterozygosity of plants, vertebrates and invertebrates. Enhanced growth of selected heterozygous molluscs has been attributed to lower energetic requirements for basal metabolism. I investigated the correlation between single- and multiple-locus heterozygosity and phenotype of the juvenile scallop <i>Placopecten magellanicus</i> (Gmelin). Two questions were being asked: do heterozygous scallops grow faster and which metabolic processes are affected by the degree of heterozygosity? No significant correlation was observed between genotype (scored at 6 polymorphic loci) and growth in six different samples of juvenile scallops, all belonging to the same time...

The estuary as a habitat: an analysis of data on the soft-bottom macrofauna of the estuarine area of the Rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt OMA
Wolff, W.J..
During the years 1968-1970 a study has been made of the soft-bottom macrofauna (Coelenterata, Mollusca, Echiuroidea, Polychaeta, Archiannelida, Crustacea Malacostraca) of the estuaries of the rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt in the southwestern part of The Netherlands and of the adjacent part of the North Sea. 1751 samples were taken with 0.1 and 0.2 m² Van Veen grabs; in the intertidal zone several hundreds of samples were dug out, whereas further samples were taken for the analysis of interstitial polychaetes and archiannelids. Of the environmental factors especially salinity, sediment composition, current velocity, water temperature, oxygen saturation, turbidity, water pollution, exposure to waves, and the influence of ice have been investigated....

Transformation, concentrations and deposition of North Sea aerosols OMA
Otten, P..
In this work, attention was focused on the lower troposphere above the North Sea. It is well known that the marine atmosphere acts as a source, a sink and a reaction reservoir for various chemical constituents. In the past 15 years it has become clear that the atmosphere above the North Sea can be an important source of pollutants for the sea. In chapter 1, the sampling of marine aerosols with a cascade impactor was studied with regard to the possible interaction between particles collected on an impaction surface and reactive gaseous atmospheric components that are drawn through the impactor . NaCI particles, generated by pneumatic nebulisation of a NaCI solution, were collected on an impaction plate of a cascade impactor . After passing through the...

Concentration and partitioning of heavy metals in the Scheldt estuary OMA
Van Alsenoy, V..
The continuous growth of technology has lead to an (uncontrolled) introduction of contaminants into the biosphere. The efforts of removing man-made pollutants from the natural environment have been unable to cope with the increasing amounts of waste materials and growing population. This work studies one group of substances which have a particular lasting effect on the natural balance in aquatic systems; the heavy metals. Trace metals are present in all the abiotic reservoirs of the aquatic systems; i.e. the water, the suspended material and the sediments and its pore waters. Complexation of the dissolved metals with organic and inorganic ligands, sorption and biological processes are the main processes determining the distribution of the investigated...

Mangrove vegetation structure, dynamics and regeneration OMA
Dahdouh-Guebas, F..
The present PhD dissertation is composed of fourteen papers, preceded by a general introduction and followed by an epilogue that explains the entire research framework, including the links between the different case-studies, the local and global applicability of the results and the relevance of the work in the framework of development co-operation. The bulk of the research was carried out in four sites in Kenya and Sri Lanka: Gazi Bay and Mida Creek in Kenya, and Unawatuna-Galle and Pambala-Chilaw in Sri Lanka. After a revision of the often controversial issue of the floral composition of mangroves in Sri Lanka (SW coast), followed by a synthesis of image attributes in the interpretation of aerial photographs in Kenya and Sri Lanka, a series of...

Modelling the influence of ecological interactions on reactive transport processes in sediments OMA
Meysman, F..
Within the natural sciences, it has long been recognized that biological activity can modify the texture, structure and composition of surface sediments. Darwin (1881) already examined the stirring of soils by burrowing earthworms and made detailed observations on how these organisms affect soil processes. A similar phenomenon can be observed in aquatic sediments, which are inhabited by a diverse biological community, supported by the flux of organic matter and oxygen from the overlying water column. Surface sediments of oceans, estuaries, lakes and rivers are highly active biogeochemical environments and an effective way to generate insight in the complexity of the interactions is by means of so-called general early diagenetic models (e.g. Soetaert et al,...
