TANZANIA- Coastal Tourism Situation Analysis 20
This report provides a broad assessment of the current status of coastal tourism in Tanzania and identifies the priority actions that need to be taken in order to develop a sustainable coastal tourism industry. Tourism is one of Tanzania's leading economic sectors, providing employment, foreign exchange and international recognition. For many years, tourism has relied solely on the superb wildlife found in the country. It is only recently that the need to diversify away from wildlife tourism and focus on coastal and cultural tourism has been recognized.

Levantamento Preliminar Dos Resíduos Sólidos Nas Praias Do Sul De Moçambique: Ponta Malongane 20

Depuration and transformation of PSP toxins in the South African abalone Haliotis midae 20
Pitcher, G.C.; Roesler, C.S.; Etheridge, S.M..
Abalone were grown: on diets of 1) artificial feed, 2) kelp, their in situ food source, which contained saxitoxin (STX) derivatives, and 3) in filtered seawater without a food source, to investigate the depuration and transformation of toxins under feeding and starving conditions. The abalone were toxic at the start of each treatment (~160 µg STX eq 100 g-1 tissue). They depurated at a rate of 6.27 µg STX eq 100 g-1 tissue d-1 over the 2 week incubation period when fed artificial feed; however, no depuration was observed in starved or kelp-fed animals. Toxin transformations occurred in abalone for each treatment. Toxin derivatives decreased in organisms fed artificial feed, and no B1 was detected during this treatment. Toxin composition was not...

Environmentally Sound Technologies for Decision Making in Integrated Coastal Management: Prospects of Co-Operation with UNEP-IETC for Education and Training in the Mediterranean 20
Casanova, L.G.C..
The present crisis in urban management in developing and 'transitioning' countries is largely the result of rapid urbanization and modernization which came to these countries without the basics of planning and management that should have gone hand in hand with them. Because economic growth was the primary goal, the advent of urban development further resulted in the degradation of the urban environment, notably its freshwater and marine resources. Today, the need for urban environmental management has become urgent more than ever especially for decision makers. Urban environmental management is a high level skill that is expected from decision makers - those who have the responsibility to establish priorities and create a balance between urban development...

Gazi Bay mangrove creek 20
Kitheka, J.U.; Mwashote, B.M..
Gazi Bay (4.92°S, 39.50°E; Figure 1) is a shallow tropical coastal water system located on the southern coast of Kenya, approximately 50 km south of Mombasa. The total surface area of the bay including that covered by the mangrove forest is 15 km2. The mangrove forest covers a surface area of about 7 km2 (Kitheka 1996, 1997). Seagrass meadows and mangrove forest cover a surface area of about 12 km2. The bay is open to the Indian Ocean through a relatively wide (3,500 m) entrance, and is mostly shallow with mean depth at the entrance about 5 m. There are several narrow shallow cuts through the reef, which is mostly submerged except during spring tide. The bay is drained by two main rivers, the Kidogoweni River on the north-west part of the bay and the...

Environmental influence on marine pelagic fish: Evidence from bioeconomic modelling 20
Agbesi, E.N..
Environmental factors other than fishing effort, contribute to influencing marine pelagic fish population dynamics and abundance. There is evidence from environmental modelling and bioeconomic analysis of the Ghanaian marine inshore pelagic fisheries. Ghana is a West African country and lies on the Greenwich Meridian. It is bordered at the South by the Gulf of Guinea. The official language of Ghana is English, but is surrounded by French speaking countries. The inshore fishery is a multi-specie, multi-fleet fishery, consisting of artisanal and inshore purse seine fleets. The coastal inhabitants depend mainly on the marine fisheries as source of employment and livelihood. Fisheries constitute 5% of Agriculture GDP. The two fisheries types in the inshore...

Kenya country paper Wetland classification for agricultural development in Eastern and Southern Africa 20
Mailu, G.M.; Kiai, S.P.M..
Kenya has a growing population projected to increase to 34 million people by the turn of the century. Though the country is undergoing industrial transformation, agriculture remains the mainstay of the economy. The country has an area of about 587 900 km2 of which 576 000 km2 is land surface. 88% of the land surface is classified as arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) and the remaining 12% forms the medium and high agricultural potential land. This classification is based mainly on the moisture index as indicated by average annual rainfall and evapotranspiration. The Great Rift Valley running north/south influences and determines the drainage pattern so that from the flanks of the Rift Valley, water flows westwards to Lake Victoria and eastwards to the Indian...

Multiple Planetary Flow Regimes and the Eddy Forcing in Northern Hemisphere Wintertime Variability 20
Straus, D.M.; Wu, Q..
A cluster algorithm is applied to the zonal mean zonal wind and 500 hPa height from winter monthly means (for the period 1948-2002), obtained from the reanalyses of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction - National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR). Four reproducible and robust clusters are found: two regimes represent the opposite phases the Northern Hemisphere Annular mode (NAM), and two regimes represent the opposite phases of a pattern which can be identified with the Cold Ocean-Warm Land (COWL) pattern. This identification is accomplished by regressing the zonal mean zonal wind on the COWL-index derived from 500 hPa height data by Wu and Straus [2003].

Review of monsoons, interannual variability and decadal trends that underpin climate prediction 20
Susanto, D.; Vinayachandran, P.; Hacker, P.; Masumoto, Y.; Webster, P.; Godfrey, S.; Meyers, G..
Understanding and predicting the interannual variations of the whole monsoon climate system has been, and will continue to be, one of the major reasons for studying the oceanography of the Indian Ocean; but there are other reasons. Knowledge about Indian Ocean current systems may have diverse practical applications, from fisheries through search and rescue to management of Exclusive Economic Zones. Our discussion mainly concerns the open ocean and the climate applications, but the results are important for most continental shelves of the Indian Ocean region on all but the shortest timescales. We start by discussing what we know now of the Indian Ocean’s mean annual cycle, painfully gleaned from sparse observations over the last four decades. This data base...

Co-Management in Small-Scale Fisheries: A Synthesis of Southern and West African Experiences 20
Sverdrup-Jensen, S.; Raakjaer Nielsen, J..
This presentation summarizes the findings from eight African countries where case studies of co-management arrangements in artisanal fisheries have been undertaken during the period 1996-97. The countries concerned are Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In most of the cases co- management represents a new approach to fisheries management. In some cases, it has only been applied within the last 3-5 years and in a few it is merely being considered as an option. The comparison of cases at this early stage gives an indication as to what appears to be the critical issues in the planning and implementation of fisheries co- management arrangements in the African context.

On the Impacts of the Indian Summer Monsoon on ENSO in A Coupled GCM 20
Kirtman, B.P.; Wu, R..
This study explores the impacts of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) on the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) evolution by utilizing two coupled general circulation model simulations. The first simulation uses the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) anomaly coupled model and the second simulation employs a new coupling strategy, interactive ensembles, that is designed to increase the signal to noise ratio. The effects of monsoon variability related and unrelated to ENSO are separated through composites in terms of both Niño-3.4 sea surface temperature (SST) and Indian summer monsoon rainfall (IMR) anomalies. It is found that ENSO-related monsoon variability has significant impacts on warm events. In the interactive ensemble simulation, a weak...
