Artemia urmiana (a species previously considered endemic of Lake Urmia, NW Iran) has been found in Lake Koyashskoe, a hypersaline lake on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean peninsula (Ukraine). Therefore, this is the first record of A. urmiana in Europe which updates its distribution. The species identification was based on an integrated and interdisciplinary approach using discriminant analysis of the morphometric characters, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular profile analysis. The data derived from the above mentioned approaches converge to significant similarity of the population under investigation with A. urmiana. The updated geographic distribution of the species, deriving from the present report, asks for additional contribution of other... |

The present investigation deals with the utilization of marine green algae (GA), Ulva lactuca, and an activated carbon prepared from green algae (CGA) as adsorbents for the removal of copper from wastewater. A series of experiments were conducted in a batch system to evaluate the effect of system variables. The effect of pH, initial copper concentration, dose of adsorbents were considered. The optimal pH value of copper (II) adsorption onto GA and CGA was found to be pH 5.0. The maximum uptake capacities were 24.5 and 32.3 mg copper (II) per gram of GA and CGA, respectively. The efficiency of removal was slightly changed by replacing an aqueous solution by saline water or wastewater containing the same copper concentration. Adsorption kinetic data were... |

Diel vertical migration of different zooplankton groups in Dekhaila Harbor was studied monthly from May 2003 to April 2004. Generally, more groups were found in the surface layer (0-10 m.) than the deeper one (10-20 m.). Some zooplankton groups undergo significant vertical migration at certain time of the year, others showed no clear differences in distribution patterns and exhibited no directed movement patterns. Some species stayed a part of the day within certain layer of the water column, others were randomly dispersed in the whole water column during different hours. Responses appear to depend also on the life stages of each zooplankton group, as well as other ecological conditions such as temperature, light and amount of food. Population budget... |

The variations of zooplankton structure and abundance were studied at short time intervals in the northern part of the West Naubaria Canal, near the sea side, based on weekly sampling from May 2002 to May 2003 .The community represented high species richness (120 species), and relatively low population density ( annual average 31340 organisms/m.3). Freshwater forms were the major representatives (68 species) of the community, including the sea side station. However, several marine species were reported inside the canal at a long distance from the sea. The community structure showed wide weekly variations (4-29 species), while between stations the differences were small. Relative to salinity in the canal, diversity index sustained the highest value (annual... |

Environmental Information and Monitoring Programme (EIMP) for the Egyptian coastal waters of Aqaba Gulf was established to initial monitoring and data base system by applying quality control assessments in order to evaluate, protect and sustainable use of coastal regions. Within the framework of this programme six bimonthly field campaigns were carried out annually during 1998 – 2004. A total of 11 coastal stations were selected to cover different locations of the Gulf. The surface distribution patterns of hydrographical parameters (water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH) as well as chlorophyll-a, total suspended matter, transparency, nitrogen and phosphorus forms and reactive silicate were investigated. The obtained data of seven years work... |

Species composition, abundance, and phytoplankton biomass in Lake Nasser were studied during the highest flood season in autumn 1999, and were supported by some physico-chemical environmental parameters. The nutrient salts levels were low to medium, with ranges of 0.96-9.92 g/L for nitrite, 20.14-72.14 g/L for ammonia, complete depletion -27.69 g/L for phosphate, and 5.83-9.00 g/L for silicate. A total of 71 taxa were identified, of which 46% were chlorophytes, 26% bacillariophytes and 22% cyanophytes. Phytoplankton abundance and biomass values were higher in the northern stations than in the southern, but were lower than previously reported, indicating approaching from oligomesotrophic status, with, respectively, means of 108.9 x 104 unit/L and 1.18... |

This survey first presents an inventory of fish species in the three studied sites. Altogether 17 fish species were found in Merja Zerga (Morocco), 25 species in Garâat Ichkeul and 16 species in Edku lagoon. Three fish groups live in these brackish lakes : sedentary fish, marine fish and freshwater fish. The second part of the study deals with the production of the different species. This production mainly rests upon Mugilidae and Anguilla in Merja Zerga and Ichkeul, while, in Edku, Tilapia is its principal component. In all these sites fish production seems to be decreasing these last years, because of over-fishing and essentially of the deterioration of the environmental factors, especially the hydrologic ones. |

The present work was carried out on ten mature Tilapia (Tilapia spilurus) and ten mature Bream fish (Mylio cuvieri) and the specimens were processed for histological studies. The oesophagus of Bream fish is characterized by the presence of numerous mucous cells which react positively to P.A.S. and alcian blue. While oesophagus of Tilapia is completely filled with mucous cells that react positively to P.A.S. only. The stomach of Bream consists of one part while that of Tilapia consists of two parts (cardiac and pyloric). The mucosa of stomach of both types of fish reacted positively to P.A.S. the pyloric caeci of Bream fish showed numerous mucous cells that react positively to Alsain blue. The small intestine of bream has thicker tunica muscularis than that... |

The chaenopsine blennies are an homogeneous group which may be considered a subfamily of the Clinidae, since the existing evidence is not enough to give them familial status. The subfamily includes eight genera: Mccoskerichthys, Coralliozetus, Acanthemblemaria, Ekemblemaria, Emblemaria, Hemiemblemaria, Lucayablennius, and Chaenopsis. The nominal genera Protemblemaria and Emblemariopsis are herewith considered synonyms of Coralliozetus, since they share two derived characters: small size and sexual dimorphism in the color of the head, and are rather similar in several other characteristics. The división of the West Indian Zoogeographical Province made by Briggs (1974) is unnatural, since the fish fauna of Belize, Florida and the Bahamas is very similar. I... |
