Ansa cervicalis is a loop of nerves found in the anterior wall of the carotid sheath in the carotid triangle of neck innervating infrahyoid muscles. Its superior root has fibres from the first cervical nerve that leaves the hypoglossal nerve and joins the inferior root formed by the branches from the second and third cervical nerves. The two roots join to form ansa cervicalis. The ansa cervicalis nerve formation is relatively complex, as its course and location along the great vessels of the neck vary. In the present case on the left side of an adult male cadaver the inferior root was absent and the contributions from C2 and C3 were joining independently with the superior root of ansa to form ansa cervicalis. However no such variation was found in the ansa... |

Prunella vulgaris L. (Labiatae) contains a variety of structurally diverse natural products, primarily rosmarinic acid (RA), ursolic acid (UA) and oleanolic acid (OA), which possess a wide array of biological properties. In the present study, P. vulgaris was harvested at three developmental stages (vegetative, full-flowering and mature-fruiting stages), dissected into stem and leaf tissues and assayed for chemical contents using high performance liquid chromatography. Significant changes in the concentrations of the major secondary metabolites (RA, UA and OA) were observed at the different development stages. The highest concentrations of RA, UA and OA were found at the full-flowering stage (15.83 mg/g dry weight (DW) RA, 1.77 mg/g DW UA and 0.65 mg/g DW... |

The aortic arch branches variations have called the attention of several authors, who have handled studies and classifications, both human and in different animals. The common trunk, which is between the brachiocephalic trunk and the common left carotid artery, is the most common variation. We conducted a descriptive and randomized study of the presence of the trunk mentioned before, trying to establish the possible relationship between this variation and the distribution plates of atheroma. The lumen observation makes it possible to define and check the distribution of the ostium, among the common ostium and the ones with common trunks. Regarding the plates of atheroma, it was found that there is a slight prevalence in common trunks cases, with respect to... |

Variation in trunk diameter (TDV) has been proposed as an indicator of the water status of grape vines, with apparently contradictory results. In Vitis vinifera L. var. Crimson Seedless we evaluated the water potential (Ψ), an indicator normally used to determine the water status of grapes, and TDV, comparing two irrigation treatments which restored 100% or 50% of the ETc, to compare the sensitivity of these two indicators to a decrease in soil water. Two evaluation periods of 23 d each were used, the first during the exponential growth phase and the second in the post-veraison period, when the trunk stops growing. In both periods TDV showed coefficients of variation greater than 25%, compared to the 7-10% recorded for water potential. However,... |

A vineyard in south-central Chile was surveyed during five growing seasons to analyze the increase over time in the number of plants infected with Grapevine leafroll-associated virus-1, -2 and -3. At the end of the study, GLRaV-3 was found to be the most prevalent virus, with 46% of plants infected by this pathogen. GLRaV-2 infected 13% of plants, and GLRaV-1 infected 12%. Considering all three viruses together, the prevalence of infection increased exponentially from 14% of the plants at the beginning of the study period to 68% at the end. The patterns of the spread of GLRaV-2 and GLRaV-3 were mostly along the rows, whereas the pattern of spread for GLRaV-1 could not be determined. |

The celiac trunk is the major source of blood supply to the supracolic abdominal compartment. Usually, it branches into the splenic, common hepatic and left gastric arteries to supply this region. It has however been shown to display ethnic variations in its branching pattern. Knowledge of these variations may be important in surgical and radiological procedures around the head of the pancreas. The aim was to illustrate the commonest variations in the branching pattern of the celiac trunk in a Kenyan population. The study was conducted in the Department of Human Anatomy, University of Nairobi. Were collected one hundred twenty three (123) bodies obtained from dissection cadavers and autopsy cases following ethical approval and consent from next of kin.... |

The pattern of formation of the human rectus sheath exhibits variations, it is not clear if these variations are population specific. This study aimed at describing the pattern of formation of the rectus sheath in a select Kenyan population. Formation of the rectus sheath was analyzed in eighty subjects (47 male, 33 female) during autopsies and cadaveric dissection. The anterior wall of the rectus sheath in all cases was aponeurotic and firmly attached to rectus abdominis muscle. The posterior wall of the rectus sheath was aponeurotic in 71 (88.5%) cases, the rest were musculoaponeurotic and only seen in males. In all cases the aponeurosis of internal oblique abdominis split into two lamina; a deep lamina that fused with the aponeurosis of transverses... |

During anatomical dissection of the abdominal cavity of an adult male corpse, a changing pattern of vascular supply of pancreas and of the transverse colon was observed. The inferior pancreatic artery and the middle colic artery arose from a common trunk of the superior mesenteric artery. Moreover, the lienal artery did not direct a dorsal branch to the neck of the pancreas, but rather sent two greater pancreatic arteries (proximal and distal) to the body of the gland and one caudal artery to the terminal portion of the pancreas. We also observed a large communicating branch between the proximal portion of the middle colic artery and the ascending branch of the left colic artery, previously described as artery of Moskowitz. Based on these data, clinical... |
