VNTR-based diversity analysis of 2x and 4x full-sib Musa hybrids Electron. J. Biotechnol.
The triploid plantain landrace Obino l’Ewai (Musa spp., AAB genome) has been crossed with a wild diploid banana (M. acuminata subsp. burmannica var. ‘Calcutta 4’, AA genome) to generate full-sib diploid and tetraploid hybrids combining good agronomic performance and disease resistance. Microsatellite marker analysis of the parental genotypes confirmed the highly heterozygous nature of both parental genotypes. Comparative analysis of 2x and 4x full-sib hybrids with their parental genotypes indicated that tetraploid hybrids are generally more closely related to Obino l’Ewai than their diploid full-sibs. Based on VNTR analysis it is possible to identify those hybrids, which may be most useful in subsequent breeding of secondary triploid hybrids. There was a...

Volatile Compounds in Honey Produced in the Central Valley of Ñuble Province, Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Gianelli Barra,María Pía; Ponce-Díaz,María Cristina; Venegas-Gallegos,César.
Headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with an 85 µm Carboxen polydimethylsiloxane (CAR/PDMS) fiber was used to extract volatile compounds, and a gas chromatograph equipped with a mass spectometry detector (GC-MS) was used to identify the volatile compounds in honeys. Thirty-four different volatile compounds from the headspace of honey produced in the central valley of Ñuble Province, Chile, were extracted with fiber coating CAR/PDMS. The identified compounds were: 10 alcohols, 9 acids, 6 ketones, 3 aldehydes, 2 furans, 2 terpenes and 2 lactones. Only four of the volatile compounds had never been reported before as honey compounds; these being: 1,3-propanodiol, 2-methyl butanoic acid, 3,4-dimethyl-3-hexen-2-one, and 6-methyl-5-octen-2-one. These four...

Volatile Organic Compounds Produced by Human Skin Cells Biol. Res.
ACEVEDO,CRISTIAN A; SÁNCHEZ,ELIZABETH Y; REYES,JUAN G; YOUNG,MANUEL E.
Skin produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released to the environment with emission patterns characteristic of climatic conditions. It could be thought that these compounds are intermediaries in cell metabolism, since many intermediaries of metabolic pathways have a volatile potential. In this work, using gas chromatography, we answered the question of whether VOC profiles of primary cultures of human dermal fibroblasts were affected by the type of culture conditions. VOCs were determined for different types of culture, finding significant differences between skin cells grown in classical monolayer culture -2D- compared with 3D matrix immobilized cultures. This indicates that VOC profiles could provide information on the physiological state of skin...

Volcanic materials as carriers for the formulation of mycoinsecticides using the fungus Beauveria bassiana Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sy,Victoria E; Schalamuk,Santiago; Scorsetti,Ana C; Botto,Irma L.
Improvements in the formulation of biological insecticides are crucial to increase their stability and competitiveness in the market. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of volcanic materials with different hydric retention capacities to increase the thermotolerance of B. bassiana conidia. Two pyroclastic rocks and a zeolite clinoptilolite were selected for this study. In addition, a commercial silica gel was used due to its reported capacity to increase conidial thermotolerance. Dry conidia were mixed with the materials to obtain a 2% w/w granular formulation, while conidial powder alone served as the control. Mixtures were stored at room temperature for 30 days and then exposed to 50 °C for two hours, and the viability was measured before and...

Voluntary modulations of attention in a semantic auditory-visual matching Task: an ERP study Biol. Res.
ORTEGA,RODRIGO; LÓPEZ,VLADIMIR; ABOITIZ,FRANCISCO.
The present study explores the neural correlates of voluntary modulations of attention in an auditory-visual matching task. Visual stimuli (a female or a male face) were preceded in cióse temporal proximity by auditory stimuli consisting of the Spanish word for "man" and "woman" ("hombre" or "mujer"). In 80% of the triáis the gender of the two stimuli coincided. Participants were asked to mentally count the specific instances in which a female face appeared after hearing the word "man" (10 % of the triáis). Our results show attention-related amplitude modulation of the early visual ERP components NI and anterior P2, but also amplitude modulations of (i) the N270 potential usually associated with conflict detection, (ii) a P300 wave related to infrequency,...

Walter Thiel's Embalming Method: Review of Solutions and Applications in Different Fields of Biomedical Research International Journal of Morphology
Ottone,Nicolás Ernesto; Vargas,Claudia A; Fuentes,Ramón; del Sol,Mariano.
Walter Thiel developed the method that enables preservation of the body with natural colors in 1992. It consists in the application of an intravascular injection formula, and maintaining the corps submerged for a determinate period of time in the immersion solution in the pool. After immersion, it is possible to maintain the corps in a hermetically sealed container, thus avoiding dehydration outside the pool. The aim of this work was to review the Thiel method, searching all scientific articles describing this technique from its development point of view, and application in anatomy and morphology teaching, as well as in clinical and surgical practice. Most of these studies were carried out in Europe. We used PubMed, Ebsco and Embase databases with the...

Water economy in rodents: evaporative water loss and metabolic water production RChHN
Cortés,Arturo; Rosenmann,Mario; Bozinovic,Francisco.
Studies on water balance in desert-dwelling granivorous rodents use evaporative water loss (EWL) and metabolic water production (MWP) to evaluate the efficiency of water regulation, expressed by the model Ta @ MWP = EWL, defined by an ambient temperature (Ta) value at (@) which MWP/EWL = 1. Here we evaluate and apply this model (1 - r²) determining water regulation efficiency, based on the energetic cost (MR) to maintain water balance (WB), that is MR-WB. To test the model, EWL was measured and MWP estimated in nine species of rodents from different localities of northern and north-central Chile (II and IV Regions): Octodon degus (Od) and O. lunatus (Olu) (Octodontidae), Abrothrix olivaceus (Ao), A. longipilis (Al), A. andinus (Ad), Phyllotis darwini (Pd),...

Water economy of three Cinclodes (Furnariidae) species inhabiting marine and freshwater ecosystems RChHN
SABAT,PABLO; NESPOLO,ROBERTO F; BOZINOVIC,FRANCISCO.
Birds living in desert environments have been the preferred models for the study of physiological adaptations to water scarcity. Passerine birds living in marine coastal habitats face similar problems, yet physiological adaptations to water conservation in such species have been poorly documented. We measured total evaporative water loss (TEWL) and rates of oxygen consumption (VO2) in three species of passerine birds dwelling in marine and fresh water habitats. Mass specific total evaporative water loss was significantly lower in the marine species, Cinclodes nigrofumosus, than in species inhabiting areas near freshwater sources. We found a positive relationship between TEWL and VO2. The ratio of TEWL to VO2 (relative evaporative water loss, RTEWL) showed...

Water Erosion Prediction Using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in a GIS Framework, Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Bonilla,Carlos A; Reyes,José L; Magri,Antoni.
Soil erosion is a growing problem in Central Chile, particularly in coastal dry lands, where it can significantly decrease the productivity of rainfed agriculture and forestry. In this study, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS), and used to evaluate the effects of different combinations of vegetative cover on soil erosion rates for Santo Domingo County in Central Chile. Implementing RUSLE in the GIS required a complete description of the county’s soils, climate, topography and current land use/land cover. This information was compiled in rasters of 25 x 25 m cells. RUSLE parameter values were assigned to each cell and annual soil loss estimates were generated on a cell by cell basis....

WATER REQUIREMENTS AND WATER USE EFFICIENCY OF CARROT UNDER DRIP IRRIGATION IN A HAPLOXERAND SOIL J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Quezada,C; Fischer,S; Campos,J; Ardiles,D.
Water management efficiency is a key issue for sustainable agriculture development, since it is necessary to get a higher biomass production per unit of applied water. This study aimed to determine both water requirements and water use efficiency (WUE) and their effect on yield and quality parameters in carrots (Daucus carota L.), during the 2006 - 2007 growing season in Chilian, Chile (36° 35' 43.2" S, 72° 04' 39" W, 140 m altitude). The water treatments applied were 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 % pan evaporation (Epan) in a Haploxerand soil under drip irrigation. The results showed that the highest crop yield was obtained with 100% Epan treatment. However, the highest WUE was found in the 75% Epan treatment equivalent to 3864 m³ ha-1, which is the recommended...

Water transport and gas exchange in the non-vascular plant Dendroligotrichum dendroides (Brid. ex Hedw.)Broth. (Polytrichaceae, Bryophyta) Gayana Botánica
Atala,Cristian.

Wavelet and Fourier analysis of ventricular and main arteries pulsations in anesthetized dogs Biol. Res.
JIMÉNEZ,RAÚL F; TORRES,PATRICIO; GÜNTHER,BRUNO; MORGADO,ENRIQUE; JIMÉNEZ,CLAUDIA A.
The purpose of this study was to characterize time-frequency behavior using the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to analyze ventricular and arterial pressure signals from anesthetized mongrel dogs. Both ventricular and arterial pressure pulsations were recorded using catheter-tip manometers and the CWT was applied to these signals to obtain module coefficients, associated contours, and the 3-D representation of these modules. FFT was applied to obtain the Fourier spectrum. The mathematical analysis of the cardiovascular pressure pulsations permitted the identification of the evolution of the frequency components for the aortic and pulmonary valve functions as well as the intra-ventricular and respiratory influences on the...

WEAKENING OF HORIZONTAL SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS AT LOW WIND SPEEDS WITH STRONG INSOLATION Gayana
Katsaros,Kristina B.
During days with strong insolation and low wind speed, there may be uneven net heating of the water layer near the surface of the ocean caused by variations in horizontal temperature at the sea surface. The heat loss from the water caused by evaporation, sensible, or longwave radiation is proportional to the sea surface temperature and is, therefore, greater from warm water compared to that from the relatively colder water. As a result, under low wind speed conditions and clear skies, the horizontal SST discontinuities, occurring at fronts, eddies, or in storm wakes, may diminish or even vanish. This phenomenon is illustrated here with some field and modeling results. The time dependence is important for the impact on remote sensing of SST, and it is found...
