| La BELGICA a donc été le premier bateau à bord duquel des sondages thermométriques ont été effectués dans les régions antarctiques, à l'aide d'instruments modernes, et à des profondeurs suffisamment grandes pour déterminer la position du maximum de température des couches profondes. Ces sondages présentent en outre le réel avantage de ne pas être trop espacés : bien loin d'être disséminés, au hasard, sur une grande surface du globe, ils sont au contraire groupés de telle sorte qu'ils permettent d'envisager d'une façon approfondie les portions de l'Océan explorées par l'Expédition, portions qui appartiennent d'ailleurs à deux régions océaniques différentes et parfaitement caractéristiques au point de vue des relations thermiques qu'elles présentent. | La collection de Némertiens de l'Expédition antarctique française commandée par le Dr Charcot ne comprend pas un grand nombre d'espèces ; mais plusieurs d'entre elles sont représentées par un grand nombre d'échantillons, ce qui permet de se rendre compte de la répartition de ces êtres au point de vue de la composition de la faune. Toutes ces Némertes ont été recueillies sur le rivage, sous le sable, sous les pierres, ou draguées à faible profondeur, dont le maximum est 40 mètres, ou prises à la ligne dans les mêmes localités. | Les Pycnogonides recueillis par la mission du Français, dans les régions antarctiques, proviennent tous des parages de l'île Booth-Wendel ou de l' Ile Wiencke ; la plupart même ont clé capturés à Port-Charcot, c'est-à-dire au lieu qui abrite longtemps le navire dans la première de ces îles. Beaucoup furent trouvés à la côte par mer basse; les autres ont été pris au moyen de la drague sur des fonds qui atteignaient au plus 40 mètres. | At any time of the year and anywhere on Earth, the air temperature drops as the altitude increases. Climate is rougher at the top of mountains than in the surrounding plains, and the higher you get the earlier snow appears and the longer it stays as you move towards summer. In the Alps, at 2 900 m, the influence of winter is predominant and summer heat cannot make the snow melt and disappear, even for a few days. As a consequence, snow piles up and packs down. In the great Alpine massif, the lower limits of this permanent snow cap can be traced approximately enough to imagine the surface, almost flat, marking the boundary of this snow cap. This imaginary boundary marks the limit of the everlasting snow. |

| Before the cruise of the Belgica, very few studies had been carried out on the ice fields of the southern oceans. Fricker, read through the travel books of Ross, Dumont d'Urville, Wilkes and other sailors who cruised the Antarctic oceans, in search of information on sea-ice, and summed up in very few pages all the knowledge on the South Pole ice fields in 1898, at the same time, the Belgica was trapped in the ice fields. |

Il n'en est plus de même à l'égard de la région antarctique proprement dite, au-dedans des limites d'extension de la banquise. Ici, les documents sont moins nombreux, soit qu 'ils manquent vraiment, soit qu'ils n'aient pas encore été publiés. La collection rapportée par l'Expédition Charcot mérite donc un examen attentif. | During the cruise of the Belgica, from the island of Madeira to Rio de Janeiro, in Montevideo and the Magellan straight, determinations of surface water density have been carried out three times a day. Later, during the first soundings of the Belgica, conducted between State Island and the southern Shetlands, bottom water was sampled and studied. These studies, interrupted during the geographic discovery cruise in Antarctica, were resumed in the Pacific Ocean, beyond the Polar Circle, and, during the wintering of the Belgica in the South Pole ice fields, water was sampled at great depths and studied, on board, in the physics laboratory. | La collection conchyliologique du Musée d’Histoire Naturelle des Pays-Bas est d’origine très hétérogène. Au premier lieu elle dérive du Cabinet de Zoologie, d’Anatomie Comparée et de Minéralogie de l’Université de Leide, qui surtout sous la direction du professeur Brugmans (1786—1819) s’était énormément développé¹). | During a visit to the Leyden Museum I found in the collection a Coleotichus from the Samoa-islands which on examination appeared to represent a new species of this genus. When preparing my Monograph of the Coleotichus (Annales Musei nationalis Hungarici, III, pp. 317 — 361, pls. VIII et IX, 1905) I did not see any material from the Samoa-islands and it is quite interesting to find the genus is represented there by a new species. In my opinion this is certainly one of the intermediate forms which are to be found between the splendid C. Blackburni from Hawaii and the australasian Coleotichus. | Je rapporte au Lasiodactylus maculosus Olliff (Notes Leyden Museum, VI, 1884, p. 74) sous le nom de variété L. nitidus Grouv., un nombre relativement considérable de Lasiodactyles provenant de Sumatra: Pajakombo. Ces insectes présentent la forme allongée du L. maculosus, la disposition des taches des élytres, etc., mais ils ont la ponctuation du prothorax plus serrée sur le disque. Chez le L. maculosus (ex. type du Musée de Leide) la ponctuation du prothorax devant l’écusson laisse entre les points des intervalles plus grands que les points, tandis que chez le L. nitidus cette ponctuation est uniformément très serrée.
