Abstract This paper makes use of energy flow language. It discusses how this energetics approach can be useful in research having to do with the interactions between man and the environment. All life processes have energy as their common denominator. The paper shows how this methodological approach aids in field preparation, organizes research while in the field and helps in the analysis of data. A discussion of manioc as an essential plant for man in the tropics is presented, and the myths surrounding the plant are indicated and recent research finds put in context. The potential of manioc as a food of the future is presented and suggestions are made for an energetics approach to the plant in situ. The plant's potential needs to be studied in the context... |

Abstract A complete list of the non-volant wild mammals believed to be now living in Belém, Para, Brazil and vicinity or which may have lived there within historic times is presented. The list includes 72 species : 9 opossums, 6 primates, 10 edentates, 1 rabbit, 3 introduced commensal rodents, 18 native rodents, 2 cetaceans, 17 carnivores, 1 manatee, 1 tapir, and 4 artiodactyls. Relevant synonomies, recognition characters and notes on taxonomy and natural history are provided. A non-technical key is included which is intended to be of especial use by non-mammalogists such as paramedical researchers. |

Abstract In recent years it has generally been accepted that Amazonia was subject to long dry periods in the late Pleistocene and post-Pleistocene which induced forest cover to a few limited areas or refuges. It has been proposed that the subsequent genetic isolation into separate populations is a mnjor factor in the evolution of the species diversity within the lowland forest of Amazonia. Most of the previous evidence for this theory is based on studies of animals, for example: lizards, butterflies, and birds. Here data are presented to confirm the theory of forest refuges using evidence from phytogeography. Distribution patterns of the lowland species of the woody plant families Caryocaraceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Dichapetalaceae and Lecythidaceae are... |

Abstract The principle sources of the calcium found in the water of the tertiary Amazonian region near Manaus, are the water running over the tree trunks and the total forest water. The soluble calcium content must come from the rain washing the tree crowns, stems, and leaves, and to a certain point from the dissolution of metabolic products of macro and micro-organisms. Generally, only traces of calcium are found in rain water, soil, and river water. Therefore, calcium can be considered as an element circulating in a closed system. Altogether the calcium content in the natural water of the tertiary Amazon region is extremely low. |

Abstract The resin-producing genus Hymenaea has an amphi-Atlantic distribution with 13 species being Neotropical and one occurring along the eastern coast of Africa. Present evidence suggests an African origin for the genus with migration across the Atlantic occurring during the Early Tertiary when the continents were closer and rainforest vegetation was considerably more widely distributed than today. The center of its Neotropical distribution is the Amazonian hylaea, although within its extensive range from 23° N to 26° S it is found in all major ecosystem types. The taxonomy, breeding structure, ecology and resin chemistry of the 9 Hymenaea species and 6 varieties occurring in the Amazonian and historically-related Brazilian Atlantic coastal humid... |
