A COMMUNITY ANALYSIS OF THE SOFT BOTTOM MEGAFAUNA (CRUSTACEA, MOLLUSCA) FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN REGION OF SANTA MARTA, COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN Boletín de Investigaciones
Arango,Claudia P.; Solano,Oscar D..
Soft bottom megabenthic communities have been poorly studied in the Caribbean Sea. In this study we describe the structure and species composition of a Crustacea-Mollusca megafaunal community based on beam trawl samples taken between 13 and 60 m depth at the southwestern region of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean. Classification and ordination analyses using abundance data of crustaceans and molluscs produced two main groups (A and C), which seem to be controlled by depth and sediment characteristics. Group A consisted of species collected at the deeper stations and high content of silts (between 30 and 60 m depth) and exhibited the highest density and biomass mean values. The decapod Chasmocarcinus cilindricus was found as the characteristic species for...

A NEW RECORD FOR THE MILK FROG Trachycephalus coriaceus (ANURA: HYLIDAE) FROM TELES PIRES RIVER, SOUTH AMAZONIA, BRAZIL Acta biol.Colomb.
FERREIRA,Vanessa Gonçalves; THALER,Rafaela; FOLLY,Henrique; DA SILVA,Leandro Alves.
ABSTRACT Herein, we report a new record of the milk frog Trachycephalus coriaceus for the Brazilian southern Amazonia and provide an updated geographic distribution map. We collected one specimen of T. coriaceus on 8 november 2016, during a nocturnal survey inside a dense ombrophilous forest in the right bank of the Teles Pires River, municipality ofJacareacanga, southern of Pará State. The record of T. coriaceus to Jacareacanga is the first to the State. The disjoint geographic distribution of this species along de Amazonia may just reflect the paucity of amphibian knowledge throughout this biome and the difficulty to detect this species in the field, given its explosive reproductive behavior.

A NEW WORLD MONKEY MICROSATELLITE (AP74) HIGHLY CONSERVED IN PRIMATES Acta biol.Colomb.
OKLANDER,LUCIANA INÉS; STEINBERG3,ELIANA RUTH; DOLORES MUDRY,MARTA.
Given their great variability, microsatellites or STRs became the most commonly used genetic markers over the last 15 years. The analysis of these markers requires minimum quantities of DNA, allowing the use of non invasive samples, such as feces or hair. We amplified the microsatellite Ap74 in blood and hair samples in order to analyze the levels of genomic conservation among a wide range of primates including: Lemur catta, Alouatta caraya, Ateles belzebuth, Ateles chamek, Pan troglodytes, Papio sp., and Homo sapiens. In all cases we obtained amplification products that exhibited similar size both in monkeys and human (oscillating between 126 and 176 bp), except in the lemur where the detected fragment presented a size of approximately 1000 bp. The...

ABLANDAMIENTO DE FRUTOS DE PITAYA AMARILLA (ACANTHOCEREUS PITAJAYA) A TEMPERATURA AMBIENTE Y EN REFRIGERACIÓN: ACTIVIDAD DE POLIGALACTURONASA, CELULASA Y XILANASA Acta biol.Colomb.

Absorption efficiency in post-larvae of the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei fed a diet of marine yeast from mangrove mudflats Boletín de Investigaciones
Solorzano-Reyes,Fulvia; Velásquez-López,Patricio C..
ABSTRACT The present study investigated marine yeast as a food source in the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Yeast absorption efficiency was determined by measuring the proportion of organic matter assimilated by shrimp post-larvae (PLs). The yeast was isolated and propagated in the laboratory from a sediment sample obtained from a mangrove mudflat. Shrimp post-larvae at six stages, from PL-5-days-old to PL-35-days-old were fed exclusively with yeasts, at three concentrations (1.5 × 105, 3 × 105, 5 × 105cell/mL). The overall average of yeast absorption was around 65.85 ± 11.42 %. The two-way analysis of variance ANOVA (p < 0.05) showed that the efficiency of yeast absorption was not affected by the concentrations of yeasts as a food source:...

ABUNDANCE OF THE EXCAVATING SPONGE CLIONA DELITRIX IN RELATION TO SEWAGE DISCHARGE AT SAN ANDRÉS ISLAND, SW CARIBBEAN, COLOMBIA Boletín de Investigaciones
Chaves-Fonnegra,Andia; Zea,Sven; Gómez,Martha L..
It is known that the encrusting and excavating Caribbean sponge Cliona delitrix may increase its abundance near sources of sewage. To ascertain whether its current conspicuousness in leeward reefs of San Andrés Island (SW Caribbean, Colombia) is related to organic pollution from local raw sewage discharges, quantitative data on density and cover of this sponge and other benthic components was obtained from belt and line transects at seven stations along the shallow (5-10 m deep) terrace. Coral mucus was sampled to quantify Escherichia coli bacteria, as an approximate indicator of sewage plume influence on benthic biota. A negative multiplicative regression between amount of E. coli in coral mucus and distance from the main raw sewage outlet demonstrated...

Abundance of the invasive lionfish Pterois volitans in the coastal coral reefs from Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Chasqui,Luis; Rincón-Díaz,Natalia; Vanegas,María Juliana.
ABSTRACT The abundance of the invasive lionfish Pterois volitans was assessed through visual censuses conducted in 2015 and 2016 at 54 sites in six localities with coral reefs across the Colombian Caribbean coast. The invader was observed across locations and in most of the dives, with sighting frequency of 88 %, abundance values from 0 to 9.7 ± 2.1 ind/250 m2 (388 ind/ha), and 0.8 ± 1.3 ind/250 m2 (32 ind/ha) as total mean. The average density was similar to values reported in other works that counted lionfish in a broad spatial scale on the invaded area and the highest value approximated the maximum density estimated in Colombia and other locations around the Caribbean.
