Coastal hydrodynamics in a windy lagoon ArchiMer
Alekseenko, Elena; Roux, Bernard; Sukhinov, A.; Kotarba, R.; Fougere, D..
The nonlinear hydrodynamics (3D RANS model) in a wide semi-enclosed windy lagoonal ecosystem is accurately investigated in the context of analyzing the limiting conditions of the recovery of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). Among the main natural hydrodynamical forcings, we consider the wind effect. We mainly focus attention to characteristic velocities (free surface and bottom) and to free surface elevation in the nearshore regions (with shallow water) where SAV were severely damaged in the past decades. Our main result relates to wind effects that form downwind coastal jets, alongshore, in shallow water areas, due to Berre bathymetry. Such coastal jets, which were never described previously in Berre lagoon literature, give rise to substantial bottom...

MENOR: a high-resolution (1.2 km) modeling of the North-Western Mediterranean Sea routinely run by the PREVIMER operational forecast system ArchiMer

IFREMER has encouraged for over 15 years the oceanographic modeling of sea waters all around the metropolitan French coasts in order to facilitate environmental coastal studies. In that context, the North-Western Mediterranean Sea confi guration (MENOR: 1.2 km – 60 vertical levels) has been introduced in the framework of Previmer operational forecasting system (http://www.previmer.org/en). This article gives an insight into the operational applications and scientific research using this MENOR configuration.

Modeling of PCB trophic transfer in the Gulf of Lions; 3D coupled model application ArchiMer
Alekseenko, Elena; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Tronczynski, Jacek; Carlotti, F.; Garreau, Pierre; Tixier, Celine; Baklouti, Melika.
3D coupled modeling approach is used for the PCB dispersion assessment in the Gulf of Lion and its transfer to zooplankton via biogeochemical processes. PCB budgets and fluxes between the different species of PCB: dissolved, particulate, biosorbed on plankton, assimilated by zooplankton, which are governed by different processes: adsorption/desorption, bacteria and plankton mortality, zooplankton excretion, grazing, mineralization, volatilization have been estimated. Model outputs were compared with the available in situ data. It was found that the Rhone River outflows play an important role in the organism contamination in the coastal zone, whereas the atmospheric depositions are rather more important in the offshore zones. The transfer of the available...

Nonlinear hydrodynamics in a Mediterranean lagoon ArchiMer
Alekseenko, Elena; Roux, Bernard; Sukhinov, A.; Kotarba, R.; Fougere, D..
The paper addresses the application of the nonlinear hydrodynamics model (RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) equations) in a wide semi-enclosed Mediterranean lagoon (Berre lagoon), considering three natural forcing functions, i.e., sea tide propagating through a long narrow channel, wind and runoff. Main attention is focused to characteristic velocities (at free surface and bottom) and to free surface elevation associated to each of these three mechanisms, with special attention to the nearshore areas (i.e., in shallow water). The most interesting result concerns wind effects which, due to Berre lagoon bathymetry, give rise to downwind coastal jets, alongshore, in shallow water areas. Such coastal jets were never mentioned before in Berre lagoon...
