An Assessment of U.S. Market Access for Traditional and Nontraditional Agricultural Exports Under the Caribbean Basin Initiative AgEcon
Ames, Glenn C.W..
The Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA) provides duty-free access for Caribbean and Central American products entering U.S. markets. This paper compares the performance of traditional agricultural exports (beef, bananas, coffee, sugar and tobacco products) and nontraditional exports (pineapples, melons, fresh citrus, frozen orange juice and vegetables) under the CBERA. The decline in the value of traditional agricultural exports exceeded the gains in nontraditional exports by 400 percent. Tariffs and a limited range of duty-free goods still constrain CBERA’s development potential despite gains under the amended legislation.

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF IMPORT DEMAND FOR CANOLA OIL IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Lordkipanidze, Nazibrola; Epperson, James E.; Ames, Glenn C.W..
The study analyzes the impacts of economic and noneconomic factors on import demand for canola oil. The import demand pattern for canola oil in the United States is influenced by changes in the world's oilseeds market and government oilseeds programs and policies, including tariffs and subsidies. The U.S. import demand for canola oil was specified as a function of its own import price, prices of substitute edible vegetable oils (soybean oil and palm oil), disposable personal income, the Canadian-U.S. (Missing one table)

ANALYSIS OF THE U.S.-EUROPEAN COMMUNITY OILSEEDS AGREEMENT AgEcon
Ames, Glenn C.W.; Gunter, Lewell F.; Davis, Claudia D..
In 1986, the American Soybean Association filed a Section 301 petition under the Trade Act of 1974, alleging that European Community oilseed subsidies nullified and impaired benefits of previous trade concessions, specifically the tariff binding of 1962. Two bilateral trade agreements were negotiated to remedy the dispute, the Blair House Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding on Oilseeds. The impacts of these trade agreements were simulated using a three region trade model. Results indicated that neither supply constraints nor penalties for overproduction will contribute to a recovery of U.S. soybean exports to the EC. (Missing 6 tables)

BRAZIL'S NEW FLOATING EXCHANGE RATE REGIME AND COMPETITIVENESS IN THE WORLD POULTRY MARKET AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Ames, Glenn C.W.; Gunter, Lewell F..
In early 1999, Brazil devalued its currency, increasing its competitiveness in the poultry industry and capturing world market share. This paper discusses the devaluation and its effects on Brazil's trade, evaluates preliminary statistics on the impact of the devaluation on world poultry markets, and reports the results from a computable general equilibrium (CGE) simulation of the devaluation. The medium-run CGE results are compared to the short-run impacts reflected in the preliminary statistics.

COMPARISONS OF HISPANIC HOUSEHOLDS' DEMAND FOR MEAT WITH OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS AgEcon
Lanfranco, Bruno A.; Ames, Glenn C.W.; Huang, Chung L..
The objective of this research was to analyze the demand patterns of Hispanic households for meats in comparison with other ethnic groups using data from the 1998 Consumer Expenditure Survey. A system of demand equations of the LinQuad form were estimated for ten meat products using an incomplete system of censored equations. Hispanic households showed a clear preference for beef. Price, income and household size elasticities were estimated for each meat product by ethnic group. The demand for ground beef was the most income inelastic product regardless of ethnicity. Household size had a positive effect on the probability of consuming a particular meat product but a negative effect on actual item expenditures.

Farm to School: A Market Analysis AgEcon
Watson, Marissa C.; Cesar, Escalante; Ames, Glenn C.W.; Wolfe, Kent; Kane, Sharon P..
This paper explores the potential for the National Farm to School Program to effectively engage with Georgia’s public schools in order to reduce local food insecurity and improve the quality of nutrition provided to students. A survey was conducted with the specific goals of assessing: first, the current and future impact Farm to School has and will potentially have on the Georgia economy through schools purchase of local foods; second, the potential market for farmers; third, school administrators willingness to buy local food by Georgia; forth, the level of infrastructure available within schools to prepare fresh, whole foods; and fifth, the perceived opportunities and challenges to buying and preparing local food. University of Georgia collaborated...

Impacts of the U.S.-Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) on U.S. Fruit Exports - the Apple Case AgEcon
Fu, Shengfei; Epperson, James E.; Ames, Glenn C.W..
The U.S.-Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) levels the playing field of trade between the United States and the six CAFTA-DR partner countries. Half of U.S. farm products gain immediate tariff-free access to the markets of the CAFTA-DR region. All Tariffs will be eliminated in 20 years. Under CAFTA-DR, tariffs on an important U.S. fresh fruit export to the region, fresh apples, declined from an initial base of 15%-25% in CAFTA-DR countries to zero immediately upon enforcement. The specific objective of this research is to analyze the impact of tariff elimination under CAFTA-DR on the trade of U.S. fresh apples. Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) is used for the analysis involving an excess-supply-excess-demand model with...

MARKETING OF COTTON FIBER IN THE PRESENCE OF YIELD AND PRICE RISK AgEcon
Wojciechowski, Jan; Ames, Glenn C.W.; Turner, Steven C.; Miller, Bill R..
An expected-utility model and a chance-constrained linear programming model were used to analyze four marketing strategies and seven crop insurance alternatives for cotton marketing in Georgia. The results suggest that existing marketing tools and insurance alternatives can be used to reduce cotton producers' revenue risk. The optimal level of yield and price insurance coverage depends on an individual producer's risk aversion.
