Vertical distributions and diel migration of some species of micronekton and macroplankton are given in the 0-965 m water column on a fixed station in the Ligurian Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea). The hauls performed with a multiple opening/closing net system permit detailed description of the vertical distributions of eighteen species: five euphausiids, one mysid, one decapod, three fishes, three siphonophores, one hydromedusa, one pyrosomid and three pteropods. Only the euphausiid Stylocheiron longicorne and the fishes Cyclothone braueri and C. pygmaea show no migratory behavior. The other species perform migrations of more or less large amplitude: 155 m as a mean for the mysid Eucopia unguiculata until 630 m for the decapod Gennadas elegans. All... |

A simplified model of the pelagic ecosystem of the coastal surface waters (0 to 20 m) of the Ligurian Sea (Mediterranean) is described. Phytoplankton, copepods, salps, chaetognaths, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and particulate organic matter are considered. The system is open (winter input of deep nutrients and sedimentation of particulate organic matter) and is influenced by temperature and irradiance. This model simulates the typical annual variation of the plankton in the considered area. Nevertheless, a simulation during five years shows that, in contrast with the other state variables, salps and chaetognaths have an unstable behaviour. We assume that these organisms migrate in the superficial waters. |

This study concerns the numerical simulation of the behaviour of pelagic systems in marine environments by means of a coupled biological and physical model. The physical model is based on the resolution of the Navier-Stokes, temperature and salinity equations in the 3 dimensions of space with a turbulent closure model consisting of 2 supplementary equations ( Kappa - epsilon model). The tridimensional biological model distinguishes 5 areas: phytoplankton (alive and dead); dissolved inorganic nitrogen; herbivores (essentially copepods); and zooplanktonic wastes (dead bodies and fecal pellets). Other than biological relations (nutrition, excretion,...), the sedimentation of biogenic particles (alive and dead phytoplanktonic cells, dead herbivores) are also... |

Based on monthly samplings over an entire year, variations of abundance, vertical distributions and diel vertical migrations are described in the 0-1000 m water column in a coastal area of the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea for the main pelagic invertebrates. Detailed results are given for 21 species of macrozooplankton and micronekton. On an annual basis, the most numerous species by numbers comprised the euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica, the pteropod Cavolinia inflexa, the siphonophores Abylopsis tetragona and Chelophyes appendiculata, the crustacean decapods Sergestes arcticus and Pasiphaea sivado, and the salps Salpa fusiformis and Thalia democratica. Species of the same genus, such as Sergestes arcticus, S. corniculum and S. robustus or Pasiphaea... |

Vertical distributions and diel migrations at nineteen stations located in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas (northwestem Mediterranean) are described in detail and compared for the main species of micronekton and macroplankton. Sampling was performed in April 1994 in the 0-700 m water column in most cases, down to 350, 450 or 550 m for the coastal or relatively shallow sites. Most of the twenty species showed similar distributions throughout the sampled area, either non-diel-migrating distributions such as the euphausiid Stylocheiron longicorne and the fish Cyclothone braueri, or clear diel-migrant behaviour (e.g. the siphonophore Chelophyes appendiculata and the euphausiid Euphausia krohni). Four species, the siphonophore Lensia conoidea, the pteropods... |
