Those familiar with the extensive wool growing industry of Australia generally recognize the importance of spatial diversification of pastoral sheep holdings but to this time, data have not been assembled to quantify this importance. This case study based on the sheep and wool industry of central western Queensland goes some way towards filling this gap in knowledge by detailing the extent and nature of spatial diversification of multiple holdings in a survey of 145 sheep holdings. |

Attitudes toward risk are explored for a sample of rice growers on small farms in Nepal, in the context of the subjective expected utility maximisation model. Farmers are found to be generally averse to risk, with diverse levels of absolute risk aversion that tend to diminish as wealth increases, both for individuals and in a cross-sectional sense. Relative risk aversion is argued to be the most comparable measure for contrasts of attitudes toward risk. |

In this paper, the main socio-economic concepts and their applications in the study of soil degradation are reviewed under three broad headings: soil conservation as an input in agricultural production; topsoil as a natural resource somewhere between being renewable and nonrenewable; and the effects of dealing with common property resources. The treatment of soil conservation as an input has involved the demonstration of damage functions and a study of factors influencing the adoption of soil conservation. The study of renewability, or the lack of it, has involved the application of the concept of user costs, whilst the consideration of common property resources has concentrated on the need to minimise the divergences between social and private values. Interdependence has always been central to economics but assumes pressing importance for agricultural economists as they deal with industrialising agricultures. Continued unresolvable uncertainties, when properly recognised, also add to the challenge of relevant work in agricultural economics. The related roles of interdependence and uncertainty are illustrated through examples from the progress of agricultural technology and enhancement of food security. |

The Department at the University of New England is presently planning a series of internal and external reviews of its performance. This note was prepared as part of the background material pertaining to one particular aspect of performance, namely professional publication. It is contributed to this Forum in the belief that the approach and results may be of interest to agricultural economists in other academic and research departments. Broadly, the approach taken was to quantify publication output and several hypothesised influential factors for the history of the Department, including the period when this recent aggregation consisted of both the Department of Agricultural Economics and the Department of Farm Management. The period reviewed is 1959-1977... |

A synoptic review of the diverse models that have been developed for economic analysis in agricultural management is undertaken and these models are placed in broad perspective. A few practical and general problems of modelling that have been highlighted by the development of simulation procedures are also briefly reviewed. |

Twenty-one pastoralists in the West Darling region of New South Wales were interviewed to gain an understanding of the attitudes of managers in this high-risk pastoral area to uncertain prospects. It was found that pastoralists had no difficulty in specifying subjective probabilities but in modifying probabilistic information they were conservative relative to the 'correct' revision implied by Bayes' Theorem. All the surveyed pastoralists were non-indifferent to risk, as evidenced by their non-linear utility functions for gains and losses. |

As part of a review of changing patterns of variability in cereal production around the world, the situation in Australia is examined both by major cereal crops and by State in which they are grown. The Australian results are generally consistent with those found in parts of both the industrial and developing world. There has been a tendency for production and especially yields to become both somewhat more variable as assessed by the dimension-free measure, the coefficient of variation, and more covariate between producing regions. The two post-World War II sub-periods examined are dominated, respectively, by tall (traditional) and short (modern) cultivars suggesting that there may be a causal link between cultivar used and relative yield variability. |

The demand for bananas on the Sydney market is studied at both wholesale and retail using time series data at wholesale and cross-section data at retail. The cross-section data come from a pricing experiment in Sydney supermarkets. Estimates of price elasticity of demand are presented for wholesale and retail; comparisons are made and several variables affecting demand are identified. |

The natural variation in climate around the world means that periods of severe shortfall of rainfall are inevitable, and some times occur on a large geographical scale. Human settlements have adapted to this reality in many different ways, including the development of agricultural systems that feature variously robust aspects in the face of drought. As climates change under the influence of modified atmospheric composition, it seems likely that many parts of the world will face increased incidence of drought and thus more challenging tasks for farm managers, managers of non- farm enterprises that are sensitive to drought, national policy makers and, last but not least, households in rural areas that are close to subsistence levels even in non-drought... |

Economics of size is an important but relatively neglected aspect of Australian agriculture. The theory and methodology for analysis of economics of size are summarized and a survey made of evidence for Australian agricultural industries. The conclusion is reached that economies of size exist, particularly for small to medium farms and diseconomies appear to be absent. Further research is needed and some important areas are indicated. |

Formerly a rich-county preoccupation, dealing more explicitly with environmental concerns around agriculture is becoming a mainstream concern for developing countries. Concerns arise with all the major resources underpinning farming, such as land and water which are selectively reviewed here but most attention is concentrated on the soil resource and carbon sequestration possibilities. The results of some environmental interventions constitute public goods at variously local, regional and global levels and thus provide a rationale for potential engagement for governments and development agencies. |
