A REGRESSION ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF PLANTING DATE AND VARIETY ON CORN YIELDS IN MINNESOTA AgEcon
Buaha, Gabriel Toichoa; Apland, Jeffrey; Hicks, Dale.
This paper reports the results of a regression analysis of the relationship between planting date and corn yield. The study is based on experiments done at Agricultural Experiment Stations in Waseca, Lamberton and Morris, Minnesota. The experiments were conducted with several corn varieties. In addition to the date of planting, the estimated yield response equations include relative maturity as an explanatory variable. Other management practices included in the models are seeding and fertilization rates. Interactions among explanatory variables are estimated, also.

DISCRETE STOCHASTIC SEQUENTIAL PROGRAMMING: A PRIMER AgEcon
Apland, Jeffrey; Kaiser, Harry M..
The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of discrete stochastic sequential programming and to illustrate the technique through a numerical example. The application of the technique to empirical problems involving decision making will be briefly discussed and an empirical application will be summarized.

Modeling Agricultural Production Considering Water Quality and Risk AgEcon
Apland, Jeffrey; Grainger, Corbett; Strock, Jeffrey.
Environmental goals often conflict with the economic goals of agricultural producers. The Cottonwood River in Minnesota is heavily polluted with nitrogen, phosphate and sediment from agricultural sources in the watershed. Goals of profit maximization for producers conflict with those of effluent alleviation. We incorporate water quality goals and risk into a mathematical programming framework to examine economically efficient means of pollution abatement while considering a wide range of alternative production practices.

VALIDATION OF LINEAR PROGRAMMING MODELS AgEcon
McCarl, Bruce A.; Apland, Jeffrey.
Systematic approaches to validation of linear programming models are discussed for prescriptive and predictive applications to economic problems. Specific references are made to a general linear programming formulation, however, the approaches are applicable to mathematical programming applications in general. Detailed procedures are outlined for validating various aspects of model performance given complete or partial sets of observed, real world values of variables. Alternative evaluation criteria are presented along with procedures for correcting validation problems.
