Xanthogaleruca luteola Müller (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a defoliator of Ulmus species currently present in several regions of central Chile, causes severe damage to trees, mainly in park areas, street tree-lines and gardens. The antifeeding and insecticidal activities of extracts from immature fruit of Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) were determined on adults of X. luteola in laboratory bioassays. Several concentrations of the extracts obtained with water and ethanol were used and their effectiveness and LC50 were determined. The antifeeding action of the water extracts caused 100% deterrence over concentrations of 3.6% w/v. Both extracts were effective insecticides against adults, causing 86% mortality (2.4% w/v), with a better performance of the... |

The effect of pyriproxyfen, phenoxycarb, chlorpyrifos, and mineral oil in the control of first generation nymphs of the San Jose scale (SJC), Diaspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock), in almond, Prunusdulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb, and apple, Malusdomestica Borkh. orchards was studied in the 2001-2002 season in central Chile. One and two sprays of pyriproxyfen 0.07% and phenoxycarb 0.05% were applied, the first at the beginning of the appearance of nymphs in early spring (biofix), and the other 15 days later, and were compared with one spray of chlorpyrifos 0.08% applied at the biofix. Also, one and two sprays of mineral oil 1% were evaluated, the first applied 7 days after the biofix, and the second 15 days after the first spray. Evaluations were done in the... |

Plant samples of jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.) and thornapple (D. ferox L.) were collected to determine the presence of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), and Potato virus Y (PVY) in Santiago, Chile (33º34 S lat, 70º38 W long, altitude 625 mosl), using double stranded RNA (dsRNA) analysis and ELISA. Both weeds were positive to the three types of virus with a percentage of infection ranging from 20-30% except for PVY infection in D. stramonium with an incidence of 5%. Under controlled conditions, the aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) transmitted CMV from D. ferox to tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and sweet peppers (Capsicum annuum L.), but did not transfer it to potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.). Seeds of positive D.... |

The insecticide effect of agricultural detergents SU 120 and Tecsa Fruta was evaluated on females and nymphs II of Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni & Tozzetti) in the laboratory. Mortality at 24 h was subjected to Probit analysis to obtain the LC50. For Tecsa Fruta, a volume of 9.5 mL solution was sprayed, while for SU 120, volumes of 2, 4, and 8 mL 100 mL-1 solution were evaluated. Mortality was directly related to the concentration used. Nymphs II were more susceptible than females to both detergents. LC50 for Tecsa Fruta were 17.9 mL 100 mL-1 for females, and 5.4 mL 100 mL-1 for nymphs II, whereas for SU 120 they were 3.1, 1.6, and 1.9 mL 100 mL-1 on females, and 0.8, 0.5, and 0.5 mL 100 mL-1 (with 2, 4, and 8 mL, respectively) on nymphs II.... |

The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is a good working model for studies of irradiation as a quarantine treatment on agricultural products against this insect group. A study was conducted to evaluate the mortality of this species, resulting from different dosages of gamma irradiation. Field populations were collected and exposed to 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 kGy in a 60-Cobalt irradiator. In a first experiment, 645 adult F. occidentalis per treatment were used. Adult mortality reached 35% to 67% after 1 h exposure, significantly higher than the control. In a second experiment with the same dosages and storage at 5-6°C, evaluations were done at days 8 and 14 on at least 200 adults. Mortality increased significantly with the dosage of... |

To determine the susceptibility of important species of eucalypt trees in Chile to Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), an insect that was detected on Eucafyptus camaldulensis Dehn. in 2002 in Santiago, which causes defoliation of trees affected, and even their death in severe infestations, a field evaluation of an induced infestation was performed in 2004 of one-year-old plants of E. camaldulensis, E. nitens Deane & Maiden, and E. globulus Labill Growths of infested plants were compared with uninfested controls, using destructive sampling at 15, 30, 45, and 60 days. Also, observations were made regarding the duration of the development stages of the insect during two generations. The only species that was susceptible to the... |
