The proliferation of bacteria in intensive aquaculture systems may be responsible for poor growth and mass mortality of marine fish larvae. Essential fatty acids provided in the diet could protect larvae by modulation of the immune response via arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus larvae were fed rotifers Brachionus plicatilis enriched with three commercial diets containing different fatty acid profiles. Divergence in physiological factors affecting swimming performance between anadromous and resident populations of brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis ArchiMer

In this study, an anadromous strain (L) and a freshwater-resident (R) strain of brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis as well as their reciprocal hybrids, were reared in a common environment and submitted to swimming tests combined with salinity challenges. The critical swimming speeds (Ucrit) of the different crosses were measured in both fresh (FW) and salt water (SW) and the variations in several physiological traits (osmotic, energetic and metabolic capacities) that are predicted to influence swimming performance were documented. Otolith shape is an efficient tool for fish stock discrimination. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the environmental parameters that could influence otolith morphogenesis and growth. Current global ocean warming negatively affects the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA) by phytoplankton and thus their availability in marine food webs. As EPA and DHA are essential nutrients for most fish species, their deficiency could affect many aspects of fish physiology, notably otolith morphogenesis.
