The causal agents of apple bull?s-eye rot in southern Brazil have recently been described as Neofabraea actinidiae and N. brasiliensis. Isolates of both species were evaluated for response of mycelial growth index (MGI) to different temperatures, enzyme production, mycelial growth inhibition and effective concentrations (EC 50 and EC 100 ) of the fungicides tri fl umizole, pyrimethanil and thiophanate methyl, as well as aggres- siveness on fruits of "Fuji " hybrid and " Pink Lady " . There was signi ficantly lower mycelium growth in N. brasiliensis compared with N. actinidiae at all temperatures tested. Neither species grew at 3 and 32°C. There were minor differences in production of enzymes in the two species, with all N. brasiliensis isolates showing no... |

The downy mildew, caused by Plasmopora viticola, is one of the most important grapevine (Vitis vinifera) diseases in Southern Brazil, causing defoliation and economic losses. The evaluation of disease severity is an important decision for adoption of strategies and tactics for disease control. Therefore, the objective of this work was to elaborate and to validate a diagrammatic scale to assess downy mildew severity in grapevine, respecting the limitations of visual acuity. The diagrammatic scale with seven levels of disease severity of 1, 3, 6, 12, 25, 50 and 75% was developed in two versions of black-and-white and color scale. The scales were tested and validated by eight raters with and without previous experience with grapevine downy mildew. The raters... |

Several diseases have affected apple production, among them there is Glomerella leaf spot (GLS) caused by Colletotrichum spp. The first report of this disease in apple was in plants nearby citrus orchards in São Paulo State, Brazil. The origin of this disease is still not clear, and studies based on the molecular phylogeny could relate the organisms evolutionarily and characterize possible mechanisms of divergent evolution. The amplification of 5.8S-ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) of rDNA of 51 pathogenic Colletotrichum spp. isolates from apples, pineapple guava and citrus produced one fragment of approximately 600 bases pairs (bp) for all the isolates analyzed. The amplified fragments were cleaved with restriction enzymes, and fragments from 90 to 500bp... |

Soil-borne wheat mosaic disease (SBWMD) caused by wheat stripe mosaic virus (WhSMV) is one of the most important viral diseases of wheat in Brazil. Farmers have used crop rotation (CR) successfully to reduce the incidence of many diseases in wheat. CR can contribute along with genetic resistance in the management of SBWMD. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of CR in SBWMD incidence and wheat yield as compared with wheat monoculture (W). During 2017 and 2018 growth seasons, in a long-term experiment, W and three CR: W1 ? white oats-wheat; W2 ? vetch-white oats- wheat; and W3 ? black oatsbarley-black oats-wheat were evaluated using three wheat cultivars: BRS Parrudo (resistant), BRS Reponte (moderately resistant) and BRS Guamirim... |

Physalis rugose mosaic virus (PhyRMV) causes severe damage to Physalis peruviana L., affecting vegetative parameters, fruit quantity and quality. The aim of this study was to perform a molecular characterization of PhyRMV associated with P. peruviana from commercial fields in the municipality of Lages, Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil, and to evaluate its transmission by seeds. Plants displaying mosaic, dwarfism, and leaf malformation symptoms were collected from P. peruviana. Double-stranded RNA was extracted and submitted to cDNA library synthesis and high-throughput sequencing (HTS). For the virus transmission assay, seeds from PhyRMV-infected plants were used, and viral infection in seedlings was verified using symptomatic and molecular diagnosis.... |

(Strawberry mottle virus ? SMoV), ?clorose marginal das folhas? (Strawberry mild yellow edge virus ? SMYEV), ?encrespamento? (Strawberry crinkle virus ? SCV), ?bandeamento de nervuras? (Strawberry vein banding virus ? SVBV) e a ?palidose? (Strawberry pallidosis associated-virus ?

The epidemiology of Entomosporium leaf spot (ELS) affecting European pear is poorly understood, which limits the development of an effective management strategy. In vitro assays were conducted to study the effect of temperature levels (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 °C) on Diplocarpon mespili conidial germination evaluated at different incubation times (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, and 48 h). Inoculation experiments were conducted to assess the effect of leaf wetness duration (0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h) under constant temperature (20 °C) on ELS disease severity on leaves of cultivar ?Rocha?. The temperature × time interaction significantly affected conidial germination in both experiments and a response surface model was fitted to percent conidial germination data. The... |

Abstract: In Brazil, wheat (Triticum aestivum) is cultivated mainly in the southern part. The soilborne wheat mosaic disease (SBWMD), caused by the wheat stripe mosaic virus (WhSMV), is one of the most important viruses in the region. Its diagnosis is based mainly on symptoms since molecular techniques are expensive, especially for RNA genomes viruses. However, serological tests using IgY immunoglobulins are highly efective in identifying viruses. This study aimed to produce and characterize a polyclonal antibody capable of interacting with the WhSMV capsid protein. The gene encoding the virus capsid protein was inserted into the expression vector pET-15b; the transformation and expression occurred in Escherichia coli BL21::DE3 in vitro. The recombinant... |
