A Global Vision and Strategy for Organic Farming Research Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Willer, Helga; Baker, Brian.
TIPI, the Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM – Organics International, aims to foster international collaboration in organic agriculture research, engage and involve all stakeholders that benefit from organic agriculture research, facilitate exchange of scientific knowledge of organic food and farming systems, and help disseminate, apply and implement innovations and scientific knowledge consistent with the principles of organic agriculture. This document lays down TIPI’s Global Vision and Strategy to advance organic agriculture through research, development, innovation and technology transfer. Organic agriculture world-wide offers the promise of a future to produce and distribute food and other farm products in a healthy, ecologically sound, truly sustainable and fair way. The full benefits of organic agriculture are just now being realized—from ecosystem services to the provision of healthier food - yet, to reach its full potential organic farming needs to address many challenges. While organic agriculture has grown in strength and is in the most favorable position it has ever been in with respect to market conditions, government policies and international institutional support, it still does not have adequate resources to continue its expansion. The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM (TIPI) has developed a vision and an agenda to advance...

Challenges and Opportunities for Organic Research and Extension Organic Eprints
Nicolay, Gian L.; Baker, Brian.
Organic farming holds the great promise to solve some of the environmental and social problems caused by conventional agriculture. To play this role at the global level, farmers need access to essential knowledge on efficient ways, sustainable means and support structures that encourage organic practices and incentives to adopt them.

Dispersal of Rhagoletis cerasi in commercial cherry orchards: Efficacy of soil covering nets for cherry fruit fly control Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Baker, Brian.
Demand for organic cherries offers producers a premium price to improve their commercial viability. Organic standards require that producers find alternatives to pesticides. Soil treatments to control the European cherry fruit fly Rhagoletis cerasi (L.)(Diptera: Tephrididae) appear to be an attractive option. However, soil treatments can only be effective if the migration of flies is low, because mature flies may migrate from near-by trees for oviposition. To examine the general potential of soil treatments and to understand the dispersal and flight behaviour of R. cerasi within orchards, experiments using netting to cover the soil were conducted in two orchards with different pest pressure during two years. The netting reduced flight activity by 77% and...

Organic Agriculture - Driving Innovations in Crop Research Organic Eprints
Forster, Dionys; Adamtey, Noah; Messmer, Monika M.; Pfiffner, Lukas; Baker, Brian; Huber, Beate; Niggli, Urs.
At present, agriculture faces the unprecedented challenge of securing food supplies for a rapidly growing human population, while seeking to minimize adverse impacts on the environment and to reduce the use of non-renewable resources and energy. A shift towards sustainable agricultural production entails the adoption of more system-oriented strategies that include farmderived inputs and productivity based on ecological processes and functions (Garnett and Godfray, 2012). Sustainable agricultural systems involve the traditional knowledge and entrepreneurial skills of farmers (IAASTD, 2008). System-oriented sustainable practices include organic farming and low external input sustainable agriculture (LEISA). Elements of agroecology - such as integrated pest...

Value Added Grains for Local and Regional Food Systems Organic Eprints
Kissing Kucek, Lisa; Baker, Brian; Dyck, Elizabeth; Dawson, Julie; Benscher, David; Davis, Mike; Kutka, Frank; Perry, Robert; Roth, Greg; Russell, June; Zwinger, Steve; Sorrells, Mark.
Small grains provide numerous benefits for organic farming systems. However, because they have relatively low value and require special equipment, many organic farming systems do not integrate them. Heritage varieities of ommon wheat (Triticum aestivum ssp. Aestivum) and its antecedents spelt (Triticum aestivum, ssp. spelta), emmer (Triticum turgidum subsp. dicoccum) and einkorn (Triticum monococcum) are the subject of a project that looks at their viability. Preliminary results of variety trials show that organic farmers have several promising small grain options. Improved management and appropriate equipment are barriers to adoption that the project aims to overcome. Viability will depend on overcoming marketing as well as production obstacles.
