| Impacts of agricultural and nonagricultural trade liberalization on agriculture are assessed in a multi-commodity, multi-country framework. By modeling simultaneously all goods sectors of the economy, we evaluate the importance of (1) relative price changes between sectors and (2) income and exchange rate adjustments that follow trade liberalization in a world of floating rates. Specifically, we compare two cases using a static world policy simulation (SWOPSIM) model: agricultural multilateral liberalization and complete multilateral liberalization with floating exchange rates for all countries/region. | To obtain a healthier diet, Americans need to consume not only more vegetables, but also a healthier mix of vegetables. Household demands for eight categories of vegetables are investigated, using ACNielsen's Homescan data. A maximum simulated likelihood estimation procedure results in elasticity estimates which are somewhat larger than those obtained from both time-series and cross-section data in the literature. Even these larger elasticities are not large enough to bridge the dietary consumption gap without, and possibly even with, substantial price or food expenditure subsidies. | The Uruguay Round of negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) may draw agriculture into an unprecedented global liberalization process. If developed nations write the agenda for these negotiations and direct the research on economic effects of liberalization, they are likely to underplay several impacts which fall primarily on LDC's. This paper identifies several ways in which the history, structure, or economic power of LDC's precipitate different consequences from liberalization than would arise in developed nations. These points ought to be recognized at the GATT both because the negotiations will affect their resolution and because they will affect the coalitions and compromises LDC's bring to the GATT. |

| Researchers working in the fields of family studies and psychology show motherchild relationship dynamics affect the occurrence of childhood overweight and obesity. Many of the significant behaviors they identify relate to negotiation and generosity norms in the household. The primary objective of this study is to test the value of altruistic and collective models of household behavior using the dictator and ‘carrotstick’ laboratory experiments. We also test exploratory hypotheses relating mother’s generosity and child’s punitive behavior and mother-child weight and fitness outcomes using dictator and ‘carrot-stick’ games. | The impacts of reducing both agricultural and nonagricultural protection on the agricultural sector are assessed with emphasis placed on Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. By modeling simultaneously all goods sectors of the economy in a multi-country framework, we evaluate the importance of (1) the relative rates of protection between sectors and (2) exchange rate adjustments that follow trade liberalization in a world of floating rates. We find substantial improvements in net agricultural trade for Argentina and Brazil, particularly following a multilateral trade and exchange rate liberalization. | The National Research Council report entitled Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities: Public Service and Public Policy was released in spring 1996. Several of the study recommendations may be particularly pertinent and interesting to the land grant colleges of the Northeast. This article reviews the study background, process, and general conclusions. It highlights several specific recommendations of potential interest in the Northeast, including those relating to federal support through formula funds and competitive grants, regionalization of programs, and integrating and balancing teaching, research, and extension. |

| This paper introduces and briefly discusses the economics of two important trade and environment policy issues--international harmonization of environmental standards and the use trade measures for environmental purposes. Both issues are likely to generate lively international debate among environmentalists, industry representatives, and trade negotiators over the next few years. As the international community seeks new multilateral rules in these areas, agricultural producers will want to know how they will be affected. Thus, this paper also examines the potential impacts of environmental policy on the competitiveness of commodities unique to the Southern region of the United States. |

| This research uses experimental economics to measure the effect of parental generosity and child response on childhood overweight and obesity. The 'Carrot-Stick' experiment, an adaptation of the standard dictator game in which the respondent (the child) can punish or reward the dictator (the parent) based on the dictator's generosity, served as basis of our examination. Two treatments are conducted, in which the child spends his or her earnings on non-food and food items. Our empirical analysis shows significant relationships between parental weight and their level of generosity regarding food items.
