Characterization of two major genetic factors controlling quantitative resistance to Melampsora larici-populina leaf rust in hybrid poplars : strain specificity, field expression, combined effects, and relationship with a defeated qualitative resistance gene Inra

Two genetic factors explain a significant proportion of the variability for quantitative resistance to Melampsora larici-populina leaf rust in a Populus deltoides × P. trichocarpa F1 progeny. One is inherited from P. deltoides and is associated with a defeated qualitative resistance geneR1, and the other, RUS, is inherited from P. trichocarpa. To assess the potential contribution of these two factors for durable resistance breeding, 284 genotypes from this F1 progeny were studied in laboratory experiments with three M. larici-populina strains and in a field experiment under natural inoculum pressure. Clonal variation of indirect cambium reaction to within-growing season temperature changes in Douglas-fir Inra

Wood can be seen as a record of cambial activity. Within a ring, density variation from earlywood to latewood is a consequence of the within growing season climate changes. We propose a method to synchronize the within-ring density profile with within-growing season climate variables. Thanks to this synchronization, we show that Douglas-fir cambium reaction to the variation of the withingrowing season minimum temperature is variable and quite strongly genetically controlled. Such variation has a direct consequence on wood density, and thus on wood quality.

Genetic variability of polish Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) provenances assessed with microsatellite markers Inra

Four pairs of simple sequence repeat (SSR) primers were used to perform an analysis ofthe level of genetic diversity among 30 natural Scots pille provenances. Two microsatellite loci (SP AC 7.14 and SP AC 12.5) - which were previously developed for Pinus sylvestris, and two microsatellite loci Rptest11 and SsrPt-ctg4363 from P. pinaster were investigated for genotype Scots pine populations in Poland. PCR amplifications were analyzed with an automatic analyzer sequencer, and the occurrence of non-expected lengths of alleles for the two loci SPAC 7.14 and SsrPt-ctg4363 was observed. Short-rotation coppice of hybrid poplar is a promising renewable feedstock for biofuel production. Breeding for high biomass in short-rotation coppice has started only recently. Two hybrid poplar families were grown at two sites in Europe and phenotyped for a variety of biomass-related traits (1) to examine the extent of phenotypic and genetic variation in biomass production, ramification, resprouting, and phenology, (2) to search for genomic regions involved in productivity, and (3) to determine the effect of the environment on the expression of these traits. High levels of variability for partial resistance to Melampsora larici-populina leaf rust in black poplar (Populus nigra L.) across Europe offers unique opportunity to identify favourable alleles through association studies.Nucleotide polymorphism (SNP and indels) within candidate genes has been explored in a discovery panel of 21 French P.nigra genotypes.Phenotyping for field and laboratory resistance components revealed significant diversity at both the intra and inter-metapopulation levels, with a suspected North vs. South geographical contrast.

Une explication possible des différences observées dans l’expression de la bactériose du noyer. La bactériose est la principale maladie des noyers dans les vergers du Dauphiné (France).
