Accounting for uncertainty in multi-criteria sustainability assessments at the farm level: Improving the robustness of the SMART-Farm Tool Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Curran, Michael; Heidenreich, Anja; Landert, Jan; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Ssebunya, Brian; Moakes, Simon; Marton, Silvia; Lazzarini, Gianna; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
Many farm sustainability assessments use multi-criteria methods for aggregating indicators based on performance scores and importance weights. One of these is the SMART-Farm Tool, which measures the degree of goal achievement of farms across 327 indicators nested within 4 sustainability dimensions, 21 themes and 58 sub-themes of the FAO-SAFA Guidelines (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture). This study aims to improve the empirical foundation of the SMART-Farm Tool by (i) evaluating the uncertainty of indicator weights obtained via expert opinion and (ii) integrating this uncertainty into SMART assessment results. An adapted Delphi process was implemented, involving a group of 67 experts from 21 countries divided into thematic and regional...

Baumgart, Lukas; Flake, Albrecht.
The cooperation and link of “Workshops for Adapted Work” with actors from a respective region is an important issue in socio and regional politics because it can improve the inclusion of employees with disabilities and can create new possibilities of composite farm income. Our research investigates the prospects and conditions of such cooperation in a case study approach with four Workshops within Germany. In this survey we applied qualitative and quantitative methods of social sciences and investigated different stakeholders: disabled people (employees), farmers / entrepreneurs as (potential) employers and managers of such Workshops as experts. The data analysis includes descriptive statistics, content analysis and the Delphi method. The results will be...

The project “The integration of nature conservation into organic farming” tries to integrate goals of nature conservation and landscape development using a participatory process. A case study about the cooperation process between scientists and farmers on an experimental farm is presented. The empirical results of qualitative interviews identify attitudes and factors for risks and success of this process that determine whether a participatory approach can be an effective method for the development or the integration of nature protection strategies into organic farming.

Further Development of Methodologies for Sustainability Assessment and Monitoring in Organic/Ecological Agriculture Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas; Stolze, Matthias; Pearce, Bruce.
In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in assessing the sustainability of agriculture in terms of its social, environmental and economic impact and a number of indicators and tools are used. Measurements take place at the farm or product level and indicators can be outcome related e.g. number of butterfly species present, or management related e.g. percentage of fields with margins growing wildflowers to attract butterflies. Given its underlying ethos, the organic/ecological agriculture sector should aim to be at the forefront of sustainability. The development of assessment approaches and recent discussions within the movement have identified continuous improvement towards best practice in sustainability to be one of the important...

Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung von Landwirtschaftsbetrieben nach den SAFA-Leitlinien Organic Eprints
Landert, Jan; Heidenreich, A.; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Schader, Christian.
To promote a common concept of sustainability assessment, the FAO published guidelines for the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA). The aim of this paper is to present and discuss a method, which operationalises the SAFA-Guidelines at farm level, based on the concept of Multi-Criteria Analysis. The assessment method determines the degree of goal achievement of the 58 SAFA subthemes using a set of over 300 indicators, which is adapted according to farm type and region. It is therefore globally applicable, able to identify differences in different areas of sustainability between farms and can complement existing methods such as LCA.

Repräsentative SMART-Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung der Bio Suisse-Betriebe. Kurzbericht 2018 Organic Eprints
Marton, Silvia; Rolf, Epple; Keller, Olivia; Gabel, Vanessa M.; Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas.

Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine: Results from pilot applications of the FAO SAFA Guidelines Organic Eprints
Jawtusch, Julia; Schader, Christian; Stolze, Matthias; Baumgart, Lukas; Niggli, Urs.
There is currently no common understanding of how to measure sustainability in the food sector. To close this gap, the FAO has developed Guidelines for Sustainability Assessments of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA), which were published as a test version in June 2012. The Guidelines describe about 60 sustainability objectives, which are classified into 20 themes and four dimensions: Good governance, Environmental integrity, Economic resilience, Social well-being, as well as assessment procedures. This paper presents an approach for the sustainability assessments of enterprises in the food and agriculture sector in full compliance with the SAFA Guidelines. We developed an indicator-based tool (“SMART”), which is applicable at all food supply chain...

When trying to optimize the sustainability performance of farms and farming systems, a consideration of trade-offs and synergies between different themes and dimensions is required. The aim of this paper is to perform a systematic analysis of trade-offs and synergies across all dimensions and themes. To achieve this aim we used the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART)-Farm Tool which operationalizes the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA) Guidelines by defining science-based indicator sets and assessment procedures. It identifies the degree of goal achievement with respect to the 58 themes defined in the SAFA Guidelines using an impact matrix that defines 327 indicators and 1769 relations between...
