Rubus scidularum Beek is described as a new species. Information is given on distribution, ecology, and differences with related species. A new name R. longior Beek is given to R. banningii typicus Focke, because the publication of the latter name is illegitimate. The var. incisus Beek of R. glandithyrsus Braun is raised to the rank of species and named R neerlandicus Beek. The publication by Weber (1978), in which he considers the continental form of R. incurvatus Bab as a separate species, is supported. This taxon named by Weber R. confusidens Weber, has however also been found in the British isles in Norfolk.

The subspecies picearum Beek of R. glandulosus Bellardi is raised to the rank of species and named R. picearum (Beek) Beek. R. iuvenis is described as a new species to replace the illegitimate R. viridis Kalt.

Bramen rond Arnhem

The author discusses the Rubus-flora around Arnhem and its phytogeographical significance. Both the genus Rubus and the phytogeography are topics of the botanical interest of Prof. Van Soest, in whose honour this special issue of Gorteria is made. Het belang van de bramen voor floristieken vegetatiekunde in Nederland. In de in het begin van deze eeuw verschenen monografie der Europese bramen van H. Sudre worden ruim 700 grote en kleine soorten vermeld. Sinds vele jaren houdt zich een kleine groep Nederlandse floristen, leden der Koninklijke Nederlandse Botanische Vereniging, met de studie der bramen in ons land bezig. Tot dusver zijn reeds ca. 300 der door Sudre vermelde soorten in ons land aangetroffen, waarmede is aangetoond, dat Nederland voor deze plantengroep een belangrijk gebied is.

Four new species of the genus Rubus are described, all growing in the NE. of the Netherlands. Rubus contritidens resembles R. egrerius Focke, but is a stronger plant with 5-nate leaves and wide petals. Rubus drenthicus resembles R. ferocior Weber but has mostly white petals and yellowish to brownish styles, and its leaves are usually not convex. Rubus aphidifer and R. passionis are typical representatives of the series Subidaei Focke ex Hayek: Corylifolii with purple small prickles. Both are glandular and allied to R. phoenicacanthus Beek. Rubus aphidifer is almost unarmed, with a very wide upper leaf, R. passionis has rather strong, compressed prickles and a suborbicular upper leaf.

Rubus latior A. Beek: a new species of Rubus (Rosaceae) in France and in the Netherlands

Müller & Lefèvre (Müller 1859: 108) identified a bramble from the Forêt de Retz in the North of France with Rubus schlechtendalii Weihe ex Link (1822: 62). This identification appeared to be incorrect. The R. schlechtendalii from Northern France, also found in the South of the Netherlands, turned out to be an unpublished species. It is published here under the name Rubus latior A. Beek. Differences to R. schlechtendalii are indicated, and a full description is provided.

A new species is described here: Rubus psilops A. Beek & K. Meijer. It is characterized by very short hairs, which give the impression that the plant is more glabrous than it is. The leaves are very coarsely serrated, usually with a narrow rhomboid or obovate terminal leaflet. The inflorescence is narrow pyramidal or cylindrical, with leaves at the base only. Flowers small, late. In 1952 vond Beijerinck een braam bij Fluitenberg bij Hoogeveen die op Rubus lindleianus Lees leek, maar op essentiële punten afweek. Hij vermeldt deze niet in zijn monografie over de Nederlandse bramen (Beijerinck 1956). The lectotype (Weber 1985: 370) of Rubus serpens Weihe ex Lej. & Courtois (1831: 172) appeared to not match with the characteristics of the protologue. Therefore a new type specimen was selected which corresponds with the requirements. This type is morphologically very similar to R. picearum (A.Beek) A.Beek (1984: 58), as which it was identified initially. In order to attain certainty, plants of different localities were transferred to the garden. From this experiment it became clear that both are clearly distinct species. A new name, Rubus megistothyrsos A. Beek, has been given to R. calothyrsus A. Beek, which is a later homonym of R. callithyrsus Sudre. Een nieuwe naam, Rubus megistothyrsos A. Beek, wordt gegeven aan R. calothyrsus A. Beek (2005: 73), omdat deze een later homoniem van R. × callithyrsus Sudre (1909: 193) is. Hoewel het epitheton ‘calothyrsus’niet exact hetzelfde is, is dit slechts een variatie van het epitheton van Sudre en valt deze onder ICN, art. 53.3.

The author discusses several aspects of Rubus inermis Pourr. (= R. ulmifolius Schott). The discovery of an earlier name made it necessary to change the name of this well known and widespread species. R. inermis is easely recognised by: turio thick bluish pruinose, glabrous or with stellate hairs; leaflets small, coriaceous, white tomentose beneath, usually without longer hairs; inflorescence cylindrical, leafless; petals broad, usually pink; stamens only a little longer than the styles. Diploid (2n=14). It prefers sunny hills, roadsides and hedgerows on a substratum rich in lime and has a Mediterranean-atlantic distribution. Fig. 1 gives several forms of the top leaflet, fig. 2 shows the distribution in the Netherlands.
