Cylisticus convexus, a rare synanthropic woodlouse in The Netherlands (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cylisticidae) Until recently, the occurrence of Cylisticus convexus (De Geer, 1778) in the Netherlands was uncertain. The only certain old record dates from March 1927, when the species was collected at the coal-shed of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam. During the last years, two specimens have been collected on semi-natural sites. Both were found on a dike, one near Everdingen, in the province of Gelderland, and one near Ritthem, in the province of Zeeland. These are the first records of C. convexus in the field. Yet the species certainly is very rare in The Netherlands. The most important morphological characteristics of the species are described and... |

Daar is nu verandering in gekomen. In materiaal verzameld in kalkgraslanden in Zuid-Limburg in de zomer en herfst van 2005 werd P. dilatatus gevonden. Daarna is ze ook op andere... |

The corticolous fauna of plane trees: I. Arachnids (Arachnida: Araneae, Pseudoscorpiones, Acari) From February until September 2000 an inventory was made of the bark-dwelling arthropod fauna of more than 400 plane trees (Platanus hybrida), all over the Netherlands. Arthropods were collected from bark and under the ‘loose’ bark fragments at a height of 160-175 cm from the ground. Algae, mosses and fungi are important resources for the corticolous fauna. Crevices in the tree trunk and loose bark fragments form a habitat for a large number of arthropods. The corticolous fauna is adapted to an extreme microclimate, caused by fluctuations in temperature, wind, humidity and water availability. Since plane trees are mostly planted in cities and along roads, air... |

The corticolous fauna of plane trees: ii. Springtails, barklice and ground beetles (Collembola, Psocoptera, Carabidae) From July 1999 until September 2001 an inventory was made of the bark-dwelling arthropod fauna of 450 plane trees (Platanus x hybrida), spread over 69 localities in the Netherlands. Arthropods were collected from bark and under bark fragments at a height of 160-175 cm from the ground. Crevices in the tree trunk and bark fragments represent a habitat for a large number of arthropods. The abundance of algae, mosses and fungi, which are important resources for the corticolous fauna, were measured, as well as the number and total surface of bark fragments. Overall, 16 species of springtails, seven species of barklice, and one species of... |

The millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus, new to the Dutch fauna (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) Some specimens of the millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus (Brade-Birks, 1920) were found in April 1996 in ‘het Bovenste Bos’, a deciduous forest south of Epen, in the province of Limburg. Two weeks later, a visit was paid to the collection of the Plant Protection Service and this resulted in a second record of this species. This specimen was found in June 1977 in an agricultural field near Maastricht, about 15 km west of Epen (province of Limburg). This is the first record of A. pallidus for the Dutch fauna. This species is morphologically very similar to Blaniulus guttulatus. The most important characteristics in which A. pallidus differs from B. guttulatus are described... |

The millipedes Mycogona germanicum and Leptoiulus proximus new to the fauna of the Netherlands (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) Mycogona germanicum (Verhoef, 1892) and Leptoiulus proximus (Némec, 1896) are recorded here for the first time from the Netherlands. Of both species single specimens were found in the collection of the National Museum of Natural History (Leiden) in old soil samples. Mycogona germanicum is a central European millipede, that has been collected in May 1982 at the ‘Onderste Bos’, Eperheide (provincie of Limburg). One male specimen was collected in a litter sample in a deciduous forest. One male Leptoiulus proximus (a Northeast-European millipede) was collected in May 1990 in a nutrient-poor meadow at Voltherbroek, Weerselo (province of... |

The springtail Axelsonia littoralis new to the fauna of the Netherlands (Hexapoda: Collembola) Axelsonia littoralis (Moniez, 1890) is a rare springtail in Europe. It is recorded here for the first time from the Netherlands. Specimens of this species were found in the littoral zone in the southwestern part in the Netherlands. Several specimens of Axelsonia littoralis were collected at Borssele (province of Zeeland), under a Japanese Oyster growing on a stone in a mud flat in January 2002. The taxonomy and distribution of this species in Europe are treated. |

The springtail Isotomurus maculatus new to the fauna of the Netherlands (Insecta: Collembola) Isotomurus maculatus (Schäffer, 1896) is a southern European springtail, which is recorded here as new for the fauna of the Netherlands. Specimens were collected on five sites in different regions of the Netherlands. The sites, a garden, a roadside verge and a lane with trees can be characterised as synatropic with a large degree of disturbance. In northern Europe Isotomurus maculatus is a eurytopic species that colonises ruderal sites very quickly. This conclusion is based on the description of the sites and the ecology of species collected together with I. maculatus. The distribution in Europe and the taxonomy of the species is described. It is argued that I.... |

The springtail Lepidocyrtus paradoxus new to the Dutch fauna (Hexapoda: Collembola) Lepidocyrtus paradoxus Uzel, 1890 is a central European springtail, which is recorded here as new to the Dutch fauna. The species was collected in high numbers on a site called the Sint Pietersberg (near Maastricht), a hill at the southern point of the province of Limburg. The location can be described as a meadow on calcareous soil with a short vegetation. Morphological characters that discriminate this species from other Lepidocyrtus-species in the Netherlands are illustrated. A description of the site, supported by photographs, is made and information on its occurrence in Europe is summarised. A list with accompanying species of Collembola caught on the same site is... |

The springtails of the Netherlands: genus Orchesella (Hexapoda: Entognatha: Collembola) This is the first in a series of publications on the identification, distribution and ecology of springtails of the Netherlands. In this paper the genus Orchesella Templeton, 1835 is described, which is with four native species present in the Netherlands, i.e. O. cincta (Linnaeus, 1758), O. flavescens (Bourlet, 1839), O. quinquefasciata (Bourlet, 1841), and O. villosa (Geoffroy, 1762). A fifth species, i.e. O. bifasciata (Bourlet, 1839) is expected, but has not been recorded yet. A key to the Dutch species is provided. A database was built up, containg 1037 verified museum records, literature records and personal observations. For each species a distribution map,... |
