This document is the second version of a manual written in the framework of an international project aimed at harmonizing the sampling protocols, through bottom trawling, of demersal resources in the Mediterranean Sea (MEDITS program). It will be used as a reference document for the cruises that will be conducted in 1995 by Spanish, French, Greek and Italian research centres on continental slopes and shelves around these four countries. This manual describes the characteristics of the selected sampling device, as well as sampling methods and the samples processing. Finally, it describes data exchange media specifications. |

In the French West Indies islands, the transfer of chlordecone (kepone) from treated grounds towards the marine environment has been proved since the beginning of 2000s. In 2008, a maximal residue limit (MRL) was set at 20 µg / kg wet weight in fish and seafood, and therefore intensified the concern about the risks of high human exposure to the pesticide due to the consumption of contaminated marine products. To answer this concern, several sampling cruises were carried by public authorities and by Ifremer in order to analyze the contamination of the fish fauna around the Guadeloupe island. The data collected within these surveys improved our knowledge on the characteristics of the contamination of fish fauna and allowed to assess the distribution of this... |

Chlordecone is a very persistent insecticide used in banana plantations of the French West Indies between 1972 and 1993. Chlordecone residues were found in inland water, in agricultural and freshwater products, and in marine organisms. This pollution has become of great concern in 2007. Therefore, a governmental action Plan was launched to better assess the pollution and to improve the consumer’s protection. Within this plan, 1048 samples from 69 different species of marine fishes and crustaceans were collected all around both the Guadeloupe and the Martinique Islands and analyzed. The results confirm the presence of chlordecone in marine organisms, with highly variable concentrations (from the detection limit to 1000 μg.kg-1). In 17.9 % of the samples,... |

We present a method for combining individual indicator results into a comprehensive diagnostic of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities. A conceptual framework for interpreting combined trends in a set of simple indicators is proposed, relying beforehand on qualitative expectations anchored in ecological theory. The initial state of the community is first assessed using published information. Which combinations of trends are acceptable or undesirable is decided, depending on the initial status. The indicators are then calculated from a time-series and their time trends are estimated as the slopes of linear models. Finally, the test results are combined within the predefined framework, providing a diagnostic on the dynamics of fishing impacts... |

P>1. The development of ecosystem approaches to environmental management implies the need to account for multiple pressures on ecosystems. Trends in multiple metrics that respond differently to changes in major environmental pressures need to be combined to evaluate the impacts of fishing and environmental changes on fish communities. 2. An exploited fish community is viewed as a three-level food chain in which the two upper levels, or functional groups, are targeted by fishing fleets, while the lowest level is subject to environmental variation. Qualitative modelling is used to predict changes at the two upper levels, that is, top-down vs. bottom-up perturbations. Abundance and length metrics are calculated from survey data for 14 Mediterranean and... |

The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes.... |

One of the primary uses of trawl survey data is the estimation of abundance of the species involved. But these direct estimates give results with generally a high variability. Reducing this latter is one of the main problems for the scientists involved in such a research. Methods to achieve a better efficiency have been implemented. Nevertheless estimations remain highly variable, so the information on the changes in population, enclosed in the observed series of survey indices is mixed with a noise component result of both the survey sampling variability and effect of uncontrolled factors. PENNING'roN ( 1985) proposed time series models to filter measurement error from the signal. However the length of the series does not always allow using time series... |

Spiny lobsters are an important component of the coastal fisheries around the Martinique island. This study aimed to assess the contamination by kepone of the two main species Panulirus argus and P. guttatus in the main fishery area laying along the eastern coast of Martinique. The objectives of the study were to describe the distribution of the spiny lobster contamination in the area, to explore possible relationships with some biological parameters such as individual size, sex and colour of tegument, as well as characterize difference of kepone concentration between the muscle and soft flesh of the head, in view of helping the definition of further fishery management measures. The analyses were done from chemical analyses of 125 samples of spiny lobsters... |

The follow-up of the activity of the boats practising offshore fishing in the North-West of the La Réunion Cbaies of the Possession and Paul Saint) was carried out over one year(April 86 - March 87) thanks to the application of a strategy of sampling allowing the collection of the following statistics: total effort and by machine, captures total and by species. The study allowed a first approach of the space-time distribution of the activity of the fleet. It reveals the very high participation of the yachtmen in the halieutic exploitation of the studied sector. It also highlights the importance of tunas in the captures, which in weight are largely majority. |
