Diel fluctuations of bacterial abundance and productivity in a shallow eutrophic tropical lagoon IRD

Abundance and productivity (3H thymidine incorporation) of free-living and attached bacteria from surface waters were studied from hourly samples during typical hydrological conditions (rainy and flood seasons) in three different bays of the Ebrié lagoon (Côte d'Ivoire). Several additional biological variables (particulate organic carbon, phytoplankton biomass, zooplankton density) were also recorded in order to establish possible relation with bacterial parameters. Ecological organization and succession during natural recolonization of a tropical pond IRD

The structure of a planktonic community was studied in April 1990 for 24 days (D1 to D24) during the natural recolonization of a tropical pond (Côte d'Ivoire) made azoic by empting and liming (D0). Abundance of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, protozoans and zooplankton were studied twice daily, whereas hydrological descriptors (temperature, conductivity, oxygen, pH, dissolved nutrients, sestonic weights) were recorded several times daily. After the pond treatment, the natural refilling from groundwater began immediately. Estimating bacterial DNA synthesis from [3H] thymidine incorporation : discrepancies among macromolecular extraction procedures IRD

The estimation of bacterial DNA synthesis in trophic studies with [3H] thymidine requires quantitative extraction of labeled DNA. To determine the DNA contribution to total macromolecular labeling in a eutrophic ecosystem, we tested three extraction procedures currently used to estimate DNA labeling from thymidine incorportation : enzymatic fractionation, acid-base hydrolysis, and phenol-chloroform extraction. Because labeled macromolecular fractions are generally defined as DNA, RNA, and proteins, we used incorporation of tritiated thymidine, uridine, and leucine to preferentially label DNA, RNA, and proteins. Geochemistry of an endorheic thalassohaline ecosystem: the Dziani Dzaha crater lake (Mayotte Archipelago, Indian Ocean) ArchiMer

Dziani Dzaha is a maar the age of which is close to 4000 years. While its water is thought to have originated from seawater it is now considered as an extreme environment due to its hypersaline and alkaline characteristics. Those extreme features have led to the simplification of the trophic network. Cyanobacteria account for up to 95% of the photosynthetic biomass. The main biogeochemical processes, i.e. photosynthesis, bacterial sulfate reduction and methanogenesis could explain the current water composition. As far as we know, this ecosystem could be unique on Earth, extending the nature and chemical limits of aquatic inland ecosystems

Heterotrophic Bacteria Show Weak Competition for Nitrogen in Mediterranean Coastal Waters (Thau Lagoon) in Autumn ArchiMer

The importance of heterotrophic bacteria relative to phytoplankton in the uptake of ammonium and nitrate was studied in Mediterranean coastal waters (Thau Lagoon) during autumn, when the Mediterranean Sea received the greatest allochthonous nutrient loads. Specific inhibitors and size-fractionation methods were used in combination with isotopic N-15 tracers. NO3 (-) and NH4 (+) uptake was dominated by phytoplankton (60 % on average) during the study period, which included a flood event. Despite lower biomass specific NH4 (+) and NO3 uptake rates, free-living heterotrophic bacteria contributed significantly (> 30 %) to total microbial NH4 (+) and NO3 (-) uptake rates in low chlorophyll waters. Metazooplankton communities in the Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia): Spatiotemporal variations and trophic relationships ArchiMer

Metazooplankton abundance, biomass (<80 mu m, 200-500 mu m and >500 mu m) and community structure in the Ahe atoll were studied together with their relationships with environmental factors (temperature, salinity, wind) and trophic factors (phytoplankton, bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and ciliates) during three periods in 2008-2009. Meroplankton, mainly bivalve and gastropod larvae, was dominant. Holoplankton was dominated by copepods, the main species being Oithona spp., Paracalanus parvus, Clausocalanus spp., Corycaeus spp., Acartia fossae and Undinula vulgaris. Microbial Diversity and Cyanobacterial Production in Dziani Dzaha Crater Lake, a Unique Tropical Thalassohaline Environment ArchiMer

This study describes, for the first time, the water chemistry and microbial diversity in Dziani Dzaha, a tropical crater lake located on Mayotte Island (Comoros archipelago, Western Indian Ocean). The lake water had a high level of dissolved matter and high alkalinity (10.614.5 g L-1 eq. CO32-, i.e. 160220 mM compare to around 22.5 in seawater), with salinity up to 52 psu, 1.5 higher than seawater. Hierarchical clustering discriminated Dziani Dzaha water from other alkaline, saline lakes, highlighting its thalassohaline nature. In atoll lagoons of French Polynesia, growth and reproduction of pearl oysters are mainly driven by plankton concentration. However, the actual diet of black-lip pearl oysters P. margaritifera in these lagoons is poorly known. To fill this gap, we used the flow through chamber method to measure clearance rates of P. margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia). Rapid responses of pristine marine planktonic communities in experimental approach to diuron and naphthalene (Juan de Nova Island, Western Indian Ocean) ArchiMer

Planktonic communities from Juan de Nova lagoon were submitted to a single exposure of diuron or naphthalene in triplicate outdoor 40-L mesocosms for 5 days. The study followed the temporal changes of the assemblages by determining abundances and taxonomic level of microbial (heterotrophic prokaryotes, picocyanobacteria, heterotrophic protists and phytoplankton) and metazooplankton communities. Exposure to both contaminants did not result in significant changes in phytoplankton abundances. Role of bacteria as food for zooplankton in a eutrophic tropical pond (Ivory Coast) IRD

The aim of this study was to determine bacteria could be a substantial source of carbon for zooplankton and whether the grazing pressure of these metazoan filter-feeders could influence the fate of bacterial production. Eight grazing experiments using natural bacteria labelled with 3H thymidine were conducted in a tropical pond (Ivory Coast) during various phases of biological colonization (rotifer-dominated and copepod-dominated phases of the colonization). Short-term variations of seston characteristics in a shallow tropical lagoon : effect of wind-induced resuspension IRD

In January 1993, a 24 hour survey based on an hourly sampling was conducted in a station (1 m depth) located in the Ebrié lagoon, Côte d'Ivoire, in order to determine short-term changes in seston quality and quantity and relate them to physical conditions. Water samples were collected just below the surface and at 0.9 m depth to assess the seston distribution in the water column. Wind induced resuspension in a shallow tropical lagoon (GBR) IRD

In shallow environments, particle resuspension can induce large ecological effects. Under some certain conditions of fetch, wind velocity, bathymetry and bed roughness, resuspension is generated by wind induced waves. During December 1991, a shallow station (1 m depth) in the north shore of a tropical lagoon (Côte d'Ivoire) was investigated in order to study the impact of wind induced resuspension on the ecosystem.
